Anyone else get annoyed at lift users that take them to the 1st floor......

Naimee87 · 17/04/2023 16:20

Firstly let me just say I absolutely do not want or mean to offend anyone that medically needs to take the lift to any floor.
But today...
I work on the 6th floor and today so many people on separate occaisions came in from the smokers area and got in the lift with me and took it to the 1st or 2nd floor?... between floors there are about 10 maybe 15 stairs and the door to the staircase is right next to the lifts. For some reason it got me so annoyed. I kept having to stop at floors 1, 2 and 3... likely i would be faster walking up all the stairs. Bit of a pointless post, but anyone else feel the same or just me 😂

When i find myself getting irritated by things like this, things people do that are legal and available to them, i take a moment to realise that something is making me feel irritated in my own life that needs my attention.

Such a good post.

When random things like this irritate me, I know I’m in a weird place. When I feel like life is going well, I don’t even notice random people doing things like this! If I did, it wouldn’t irritate me and I’m more like to give the benefit of doubt.

I think you posted on the wrong lift thread @SirChenjins

@Trinity65 I know isnt great! A real highlight of your day to read about my day and the issues i face...😂

You could have a little point there.

I might liven up my boring life by getting in random lifts to just press the first floor option.

Jumpersaurus · 17/04/2023 18:31

I worked on the first floor of an office when pregnant and used to hate getting the lift because of judgemental people like you OP. I had pelvic girdle pain well before any bump was visible and stairs were just impossible, so I had no choice but to use the lift. Just mind your own business and don't get worked up by how other people use their bodies.

Hoppingmad231 · 17/04/2023 18:32

Nope I get annoyed by the people who can use the escalators but take up the lift instead meaning am stuck waiting with a pram because lift is now full happens all the time in shops.

Naimee87 · 17/04/2023 18:33

This got way deeper than i thought it would... happy to hear all sides/opinions. And again this wasnt meant to attack anyone pregnant or with health issues.
It was an observation i made which got on my nerves...
So in the another building on campus the lifts go up to the 40th floor. I have tried taking the stairs from EG to 4 and its super tough as the stair blocks are between 30-50 stairs so over in that building i think going from floor 2 upwards is probably better with the lift. Although they do a tower stair running-race in that building i have never taken part till now, i can ponder my life as i run up all them stairs...

That would be me. But I'd be holding everyone up if I walked up and down stairs because of my lack of depth perception

Are glasses unable to help you; would that thought it would be very inconvenient and annoying (DH has problems with depth perception but not to that extent).

I knew someone would jump in with this. If they’ve managed to go round a very large shopping centre and have shopping bags (from shops which have stairs) to prove it then they are able climb a few more stairs.

This isn't true though. I have a condition that causes severe fatigue. Some days I might be able to walk when needed (e.g., in a shopping centre) and use stairs if necessary but I can only do those things because I can also conserve energy by using a lift wherever possible.

In practice, I don't go to shopping centres because it's not something I'd want to use my very limited energy on but when at work I do take the lift every time because it makes what little energy I have last that bit longer.

Naimee87 · 17/04/2023 18:37

@Trinity65 tell me where/when & which lift and ill meet you then start another thread, good plan?
@MeganTheeScallion oh that would drive me even more insane....

How come you didnt consider that there are people who are pregnant or with health issues who are using the lift which is getting on your nerves?

Just like a previous poster also mentioned I have terrible balance, I suffer bad vertigo due to the peri menopause, its worse pre period. Ive just had to come down my own stairs on my bum, my balance is shocking and quite frightening at times. Im certainly not doing that at work.

Naimee87 · 17/04/2023 18:42

@Jumpersaurus sorry that happened to you.

Nope. Glasses don't help my vision one bit

Naimee87 · 17/04/2023 18:45

Well they were all men today and not pregnant i dont think, roughly in the 25-40 year old age range. But yes you are right i did judge them all as being in a healthy and fit enough condition to manage a flight or two of stairs.

I have a certain amount of energy/physical energy I can use in a day. Some days that’s more than others and and I don’t always know when the crash will hit. I use the lift every time there’s one available to conserve my energy/ability. Sometimes that also means I’ll take a bus one or two stops. I’m sure people look at me and think I’m lazy but it’s the only way to ensure I can maintain some standard or normality in my life.

This says it better than I could. This is exactly my situation though it's also cognitive energy too for me. People make a lot of assumptions about what I'm able to do based on things they "know" I can do but they seem unable to understand that while I might be able to do those things in isolation, I can't do ALL of them in one day.

I was female. 25-40. I looked perfectly healthy.

I wasn't. And sometimes me friends got into lifts with me.

I didn't realise the lift police were taking note.

Diagonalsleeper · 17/04/2023 18:54

There are many reasons why people take the lift. Where I work the stairs have no riser and my completely irrational fear of the gap means that I take the lift up. I am more than happy to bound, gazelle like, down the stairs because the gap cannot be seen.

Deathraystare · 17/04/2023 18:56

It amuses me. If I lived on 1st floor I would walk up and I am

1)|Bloody Lazy
2) Have Rheumatoid Arthritis

The only time in that situation when I would wait for a lift is if I am busting to go loo (quite often). No good trying to walk up with a soaking wet pad on!

I think OP is at work, my husband can walk miles, however due to his disability his balance is very poor, so he very rarely uses stairs unless supported by someone else as he struggles to use them safely.

ThatFraggle · 17/04/2023 19:08
  1. Stairwells are often isolated. For obvious reasons some women would prefer not to be there.
  1. Going up a lift = 1 minute. Stairs = 5 (going to the stairwell+ up the stairs). In a day, (coming into the office and out, going out to lunch and back) = 20 minutes on stairs. In a week that's almost 2 hours.

I prefer my time at work to be productive.

And I prefer doing fun exercise like Zumba, rather than slogging up and down stairs for no reason.

TiedUpWithABlackVelvetBand · 17/04/2023 19:43

I mean, yeah, I get it - I find it annoying too - but it’s just one of those things about sharing space with other people that you just have to put up with.

My seething internally at annoying randoms isn’t going to make them change their behaviour. They’re as entitled to take the lift as I am.

It’s just one of those things that it’s completely pointless getting wound up about.

Naimee87 · 17/04/2023 19:59

I like that summary @TiedUpWithABlackVelvetBand they get to choose whatever they prefer and if i‘m that bothered then i have to choose the alternative.

There are no stairs to the the first floor in the part of the building I work in, so I take the lift. However I did used to work in a building with too few lifts and too many people and those going up one or two floors for no apparent reason pissed me off 😁
