Anyone else get annoyed at lift users that take them to the 1st floor......

Naimee87 · 17/04/2023 16:20

Firstly let me just say I absolutely do not want or mean to offend anyone that medically needs to take the lift to any floor.
But today...
I work on the 6th floor and today so many people on separate occaisions came in from the smokers area and got in the lift with me and took it to the 1st or 2nd floor?... between floors there are about 10 maybe 15 stairs and the door to the staircase is right next to the lifts. For some reason it got me so annoyed. I kept having to stop at floors 1, 2 and 3... likely i would be faster walking up all the stairs. Bit of a pointless post, but anyone else feel the same or just me 😂

I take the lift because I'm petrified of them and had CBT as part of it. She advised me to keep using them for even 1 floor to help

Aquafernspindle · 17/04/2023 17:01

I use the lifts at work when I want. I don't have a disability, I just can't be arsed with the stairs. There is no law that says lifts are only for x floors.

bigbluebus · 17/04/2023 17:01

I'm pretty fit for my age and well capable of climbing stairs. However, I have an extreme phobia/fear of heights and depending on the style/design of the staircase it can trigger my fear and I just freeze. Often easier for me to just take the lift (unless it is totally glass on all sides!)

You say they are smokers - chances are they'd get very out of breath climbing the stairs.

PuttingDownRoots · 17/04/2023 17:02

This used to drive me mad in the building I worked in. Most people needed to get to floor 1 or 2. They would walk past the stairs to the lift, which had big signs saying Use the Stairs for floors 1&2.

To get to floors 3-20, it was therefore quicker to walk to floor 3 then call the lift from there.

GrumpyPanda · 17/04/2023 17:03

I've been known to loudly remark "well that was worth it" on similar occasions. Crucify me.

One good reason I made a habit out of walking the stairs myself in a past job. Granted that was to the third floor not sixth!

Yes it annoys me - esp when there are people waiting with pushchairs or with very young children who can’t get on first or second time round before because fit and healthy adults who won’t walk up a few stairs are taking the lift space.

Yes this. So many lazy people who don’t need to use the lift but are allergic to exercise so can’t possibly climb a few stairs. They don’t care about hogging the lift, and probably give zero fucks about the people who physically have no choice but to use the lift.

Yerroblemom1923 · 17/04/2023 17:05

YANBU. 1 set of stairs is easily doable by fit healthy people but then if they're all smokers maybe they can't manage it....still unfair on you for them to contaminate the lift and leave you to share the air for another 5 floors!

PussBilledDuckyPlait · 17/04/2023 17:05

I use it for the lower floors sometimes because I'm middle aged, menopausal, bloody knackered and still have nearly 20 years of working life left to drag myself through.

whatapalavaaa · 17/04/2023 17:05

I used to think this but dh who is so fit and healthy to look at, works out for at least 90 minutes each day, weights and the bike for his knee can’t cope with stairs. More going down than up but he gets some funny looks. He had a ski accident when younger and has had a knee op but has arthritis. I’l sure with lots of people it’s laziness but you just can’t tell.

LolaSmiles · 17/04/2023 17:09

But everyone who wants to and needs to use the lift CAN use the lift.

Some people are lazy people in general, some people have obvious disabilities, some people have invisible disabilities, some people have short term illnesses, some people have chronic conditions that flare up from month to month, some people are shattered because they've a baby at home and have had 2 hours sleep and feel like garbage, some people might arbitrarily decide to take the lift some days and not others. Does it really matter?
It might take an extra minute or two out your day, but the lifts aren't installed with a checklist of acceptable reasons to use or not use them.

Trinity65 · 17/04/2023 17:12

Dear God

I thought I could be petty and miserable but this is a new one on Me.

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 17/04/2023 17:15

Surely the best solution would be for you to use the stairs to floor 2 or 3 then get in the lift as when others get out.

How do you know who needs to use it though? See my adult disabled son on the flat and you'd think he was a bit wobbly, but he's absolutely no good on stairs even just a few - if you got stuck behind him wobbling about - so you couldn't pass - you'd be just as annoyed. And that's up. He's even worse coming back down as his depth perception is useless. Needs someone next to him chanting step down, step down, step down...

And the only way he can use an escalator is with a strong person either side to basically lift him on and off.

You're supposed to stand still on escalators, because the step height is deeper than on regular stairs and is a trip hazard if people walk up

Not all disabilities are visible and it's not reasonable to make assumptions.

It doesn't bother me stopping how many times the lift stops or at what floor it stops. What I do find distasteful is being in a confined space with someone after their smoking break. The smell is disgusting. I tend to use the stairs to avoid the smell.

Ellmau · 17/04/2023 17:27

So do you get off a floor or two below where you're going and walk the rest of the way?

If not, YABU.

RattlewhenIwalk · 17/04/2023 17:28

The ones that get me are the lycra clad types who have ran or biked to work and are usually to be found somewhere comparing BP and fitbits. And then take the lift to 2nd floor and drip sweat all over everyone in the process

Topseyt123 · 17/04/2023 17:29

Why is this anything to do with you? The lift is there for anyone who wants to use it.

I have very stiff hip joints and find going up or down stairs difficult. You wouldn't know it to watch me walking along on a flat area though. I also have poor balance. Again, that's a problem you can't see. It's an issue on stairs though. Increasingly.

I knew someone would jump in with this. If they’ve managed to go round a very large shopping centre and have shopping bags (from shops which have stairs) to prove it then they are able climb a few more stairs.

What shopping centre?

Naimee87 · 17/04/2023 17:36

I didnt mean to offend anyone and i know full well its a petty post. Just today i was in various other buildings on our campus and coming back to my desk/floor got on my nerves because timing just seemed to coincide with these 1st floor lift users.

I realise that some people have invisible disabilities and everyone has the right to use the lifts at work as they are for everyone. I guess my snap judgement could have been wrong and they all did have something preventing them from climbing a few stairs. But really i think they just couldnt be bothered and it baffles me why anyone would wait for a lift to get to the 1st or even 2nd floor because by the time it arrives they could have walked to the 1st and 2nd floor. I shall take the advice and take the stairs next time. I dont smoke and run for fun so why not i suppose....

And there was me thinking that a queue is a queue. You don't take priority over everyone else just because you are pushing a buggy with a kid in it.

What does a fit and healthy adult look like? I look perfectly fine and healthy. I however have an autoimmune disease that causes me muscle and joint issues. I can walk down stairs no problem but I don’t have the physical strength to push myself upstairs and need to pull up on the bannister which is exhausting and 9/10 I don’t want to touch grotty bannisters outside the house. I’m sure lots of people who take the lift don’t actually need to and until I got this I was in fact pretty scared of lifts! 🙈 However nobody can tell by looking what a persons reason may be.

That would be me. But I'd be holding everyone up if I walked up and down stairs because of my lack of depth perception

TwigTheWonderKid · 17/04/2023 17:44

If they are smokers then they they are hardly concerned about their health, are they, so unlikely to see the benefit in using the stairs.

I guess it's a similar mindset to the people who get in their cars to drive to the corner shop rather than having a walk. Or the parents who park dangerously outside our local primary school because it would never occur to them to inconvenience themselves by walking 5 minutes round the corner.

TheMarsian · 17/04/2023 17:46

What a lot of angst about fuck all.

Some people have health issues or hidden disabilities
Some people can’t be bothered to climb the stairs
Some people want to carry in their conversation

Does it matter? Why would you get annoyed by it?
Why does anyone feel they can judge how others are living?

You do you.
Chill out.
