mauvish · 17/04/2023 12:25

The Galapagos belong to Ecuador, they're not a separate country.

Re Crete and Corfu, we could get a bit silly here and start counting every Greek island as a separate nation :). That would bump my total up by quite a bit!

Madeira is part of Portugal, just as the Canaries are part of Spain. Gibraltar is part of the UK (or GB, I get confused between the two, but it's definitely not an independent nation!)

There are places that whose status as independent nations is subject to debate - I've been to Kosovo, which is not always included in these lists as Serbia and some other countries consider it's still part of Serbia (I think >50% of other nations have now recognised Kosovo though).

Ethiopia's borders have changed a lot in the last 30 years, giving birth to 2 new nations. Ditto Sudan - South Sudan. Other "nations" have disappeared or were never widely recognised as such, eg Transkei and Ciskei.

So how you count your total will vary according to all sorts of factors, not just how well you know your geography!

TenoringBehind · 17/04/2023 13:01

UK (live)
Ireland x 4
France x many
Germany x many
USA x 8
Portugal x 1
Belgium x 3
Luxembourg x 1
Switzerland x 2
Netherlands x 2
Australia x 1
Singapore x 1
Hong Kong x 1

FatOaf · 17/04/2023 13:26

If I'd visited Bermuda or the Falkland Islands I'd be listing them separately from the UK, as they are in completely different parts of the world. Ditto Madeira vs Portugal, New Caledonia vs France, etc. I know they are politically part of other countries but they are separate geographically.

BrieAndChilli · 17/04/2023 13:59

if counting seperately
Lived in England and Wales, been to Northern Ireland
Republic of Ireland x 1
Spain (including canary islands) x 4
France (lived there for 2 years) + 3 times on holiday
Switzerland x 2
Italy (lived there for a year) + 1 holiday
Austria x 1
Thailand (backpacked around for 6 months)
Laos x 1
Tunisia x 1
Belgium x 1
Luxembourg x 1
Germany x 2
Greece x 2

If we had more money we would go a lot more places!! Most of our family holidays have been camping in the UK.

SinnerBoy · 17/04/2023 14:28

I'm in my third in 30 hours. I've just flown back from Australia, with several hours in the airport in Dubai, so not really much of a visit.

Got a litre of Ukrainian vodka for 1
£16, though!

Beezknees · 17/04/2023 17:08

Do you guys count countries that you only transition through? When I went to Thailand I went via Dubai. I don't count that though as I only spent a couple of hours in the airport.

SinnerBoy · 17/04/2023 17:26

Do you guys count countries that you only transition through?

I'm not....

mauvish · 17/04/2023 18:02

Do you guys count countries that you only transition through?

Nope, only if I've gone through passport control and am no longer airside.

If you've not gone through passport control, you're not in that country!

Tarkan · 17/04/2023 18:03

Scotland
England
Wales (as a baby)
USA (3 different states on 2 different trips)
France

I've only been outside the UK 3 times, we holidayed within the UK, mostly camping, when I was growing up.

Scrumbleton · 18/04/2023 01:17

62 countries on the visited countries map. Travelled a lot for work in past - the more unusual ones were - Iraq, Syria, Senegal, Swaziland, Togo, St Vincent.

cariadlet · 19/04/2023 06:02

@mauvish Taiwan is another country with debatable status. I count it on my list because it's self governing and considers itself a nation but not all sources include it because it's not recognised by China.

I went to Erbil a few years ago. Local people would say that they live in Kurdistan but I have an Iraqi passport stamp.

Geography can't be separated from politics
