What is a cheap/ simple/ uncomplicated habit (or thing) that you started following (or bought) that dramatically changed your life for the better...

That's it really.
Same if you had the same effect with abandoning a habit or a thing.
Looking for inspiration.

Not dramatically but I started doing yoga everyday on 2nd January (there's a thread on the yoga board) and it's helped me feel slightly less creaky.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 14/04/2023 18:08

Ooh where is the yoga board?! I need this I am so stiff and cricky

MRSRUDEBOX · 14/04/2023 18:09

Started cycling. Fantastic for my physical and mental health.

Bookbooks · 14/04/2023 18:10

@Buttalapasta lovely! How much do you practise per day and do you do it at home?

Getting up at 6am and spending the first hour of my day doing something for ME. Most often this is exercise (which i dont actually love but it makes me feel so good once done), but it could also be coffee and a book. Its an hour of my day that is just about me (everyone else is asleep) and psychologically its really changed my outlook start the day that way.

Always eating some protein or fiber before any carbs (sorted glucose spikes).

Even though I'm not diabetic, this small element has largely sorted cravings and sugar crashes.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 14/04/2023 18:12

Stopped drinking wine. Well, all alcohol really. I drank to relax and ironically I’m much more relaxed and happy without it.

5 years ago I bought some home weights and cancelled my gym membership.

I started doing Joe Wicks and then moved on to other YouTube workouts.

I am as strong as I was when I worked out at the gym. I have flexibility in my routine and I can workout v early in the day before the gym is even open!

I've added TRX straps and kettle bells and yoga blocks.

I've prob spent 150 on my home gym in the garage and saved many hundreds.

Viewing purchases in terms of time Vs money.
Eg. "To buy this top would be X hours work" rather than "what a nice top. It's only £X"

Deciding to reduce short car journeys had a knock on effect on increasing walking and reducing going for top up shops just because we've run out of something that we can do without. It saved us money.

SurvivingNotThriving · 14/04/2023 18:14

Running.

Bookbooks · 14/04/2023 18:15

@IBelieveInAThingCalledScience interesting! Could you please explain further?

Giving up tea and coffee including decaf versions, I feel much more on an even keel and it’s helped me feel less anxious.
Given up sunbathing, very easy to demand it’s literally saved my life.

Porridge. Or overnight oats. Really does fill me up until lunchtime.

I do one hour-long class in person each week. On the other days I do 20-30 minutes of youtube yoga at home.

@Allmyarseandpeggymartin Here's the most recent thread on the yoga board. Come and join us!

I monitor my macros (just for training purposes) and have come to realise that, as I get older, carbs and sugar increasingly affect my body and mood.

Having said that, I'm a long distance runner and do strength training so I need fuel and there's no way I can commit to any type of keto diet.

Understanding the effect each food has in terms of glucose spikes has been a game changer for me.

Have a look at glucusoegoddess on Instagram. Her posts with infographics are fantastic.

Regular exercise has really improved my relationship with food. I do lots of different classes at my local gym, swim, or run.

ThreeRingCircus · 14/04/2023 18:28

Taking my vitamins!

I take a multivitamin, omega 3 supplement and collagen supplement every day. It may be a placebo effect but I genuinely feel better than I did.

Bookbooks · 14/04/2023 18:28

@IBelieveInAThingCalledScience thank you! I have just followed her on Instagram 😊

Also, going to bed 30 mins earlier and reading a book. I was in a bad habit of staying on my phone til late then falling into bed and being tired but wired. Getting away from screens and reading my book in bed is far more relaxing.

Changedmynameforthis55 · 14/04/2023 18:30

Slightly different than the others...I bought a jar scraper and over 10 years on I still think its one of my best purchases ever 😆

idril · 14/04/2023 18:32

Joined a running club. I used to run for fitness but it was a chore. Joined a club and it became so much fun. Not just running with people when training but also the competitions. Realised that I am actually very good for my age and have won quite a few county medals and smashed my pbs including a sub-19 5k which I am very proud of.

BenCoopersSupportWren · 14/04/2023 18:33

Not saving nice things “for best”.

Use your prettiest china, wear the expensive perfume, light the posh candle you were given as a present. You’re a long time dead!
