What is a cheap/ simple/ uncomplicated habit (or thing) that you started following (or bought) that dramatically changed your life for the better...

That's it really.
Same if you had the same effect with abandoning a habit or a thing.
Looking for inspiration.

Treadmill. Do some kind of fast walk, with run for between 25 - 30 mins mon -fri most weeks; sometimes also at weekend

It has changed my life for fitness and my arse is lifting 😂

Also saves on breaking an ankle on shitty pavements

Bought an alarm clock so I don't have my phone when I go to bed or first wake up. Instead of scrolling through rubbish on Twitter before I go to sleep I read a book instead. Much calmer and relaxing which has led to better sleep.

HumanBurrito · 14/04/2023 20:21

Couch to 5k and switching to alcohol-free beer.

BiddyPop · 14/04/2023 20:22

I started making a smoothie on a Sunday night for breakfasts and improved it over the years. So now I use up any soft fruit dad has knocking around she won't eat, frozen blackberries from autumn collecting etc. Add porridge oats, spoon of almond butter, teaspoon of seeds and small carton of apple juice.

Gets some good stuff into me, not just coffee for breakfast and uses up old fruit that would otherwise be binned.

Daily meditation. I actually downloaded an app called balance after seeing someone writing about it on mumsnet.
I'm only 35 days in and I can honestly say my mental health has completely changed. I do a bit every day, usually in the evening but sometimes I do a walking/commute one. I also snuck away at work to do a quick one to calm myself if I got upset and overwhelmed. I've only just realised it's been over 3 weeks since I've needed to do that!
Amazing!

BiddyPop
Does it stay nice by the morning once it's made up?
I tried that and found mine seemed to be an odd colour or slightly brown by the morning.

Are there some combinations that work best?

Vitamin E oil from Superdrug.

After trying loads of different moisturisers, lotions etc on my sensitive face skin, I tried vitamin E oil a few years ago and it's fantastic. Keeps my dry skin at bay, doesn't make it sore or red, doesn't sting my eyes. Best of all it's really cheap and even with using it twice a day the little bottle lasts months.

Realising that most things aren’t that important.

I just don’t sweat the small stuff or big stuff that much anymore. I am a single parent of a child with significant needs, loads of money worries, elderly parents who need a lot, and broken career to care for my child.

Just giving my child a hug some days, or just eating ice cream, or planting a new flower in the garden. It’s enough.

I wish I was more disciplined and wish I took care of myself more, but life is not passing me by and I know what’s important.

Your words really resonate with me.

Got a dog when my husband retired.
I retires a couple of years later.
He takes the dog for a walk in the morning and I take the dog in the afternoon.

It's a lovely walk along a river. I get to see nature in all its glory and the changes in the seasons. I get to stop and look. Time slows down and I feel so calm.

Best thing ever.

An Instant Pot

I have a disability and it's so easy for me to use I've felt like a chef ever since

Like BiddyPop I also make my own smoothies. I make enough for a week yikes! I put it into those soup cups with a lock top and store in the fridge. It just needs a stir to get it up to consistency, and I put a little high protein yogurt drink in just before I use it to pep it up. I've been doing a week's worth for a couple of years now and have never had an issue with it at all.

Everything and anything goes into it. The basic recipe is avocado, frozen berries (no need to defrost) spinach, walnuts, chia and flax seeds, vanilla protein powder, oats and water. No added sugar or honey or anything. Takes about ten minutes to make. It actually tastes great and fills me up for a few hours, and I feel very virtuous too lol .

Weightlifting. I do it at home, have a collection of dumbbells and DH found a bar and plates for.cheap at Aldi recently. It makes me feel fantastic, strong and capable and is slowly changing the look of my body despite the weight on the scale not changing at all

Krustykrabpizza · 14/04/2023 20:39

Oh and on the less effort side, I download a face exercise/yoga app. Ten mins a day following the app and my double chin has gone, skin much better and firmer and lips plumper. Do it while I'm watching TV in the evening

Jom222 · 14/04/2023 20:40

Forcing myself to wake up an hour earlier than I used to and exercise for 30 minutes then enjoy a coffee for another 15-20 minutes before showering and going to work.

I hate waking early and hate exercising but it has improved my mental and physical health so much that I keep doing it.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 14/04/2023 20:41

Already seen it mentioned but have been doing 2 years of yoga now. I do it at the end of the day when everything else is done and prepped for the following day. Give kids their iPads or they watch a film with their dad and I have an hour of quiet, shift the kitchen table and do my yoga in peace. It's my only time on my own and helps me switch off as every day is so busy. It's also very cheap, I invested in a decent yoga mat and 2 sets of good leggings and tops to wear, and do free videos on YouTube. I struggle with the constant noise of kids and work, and by the end of the day I just need to get away from it. I think just having something for yourself is what you need.

I was devastated when I had to stop running due to constant injuries and someone suggested yoga. I thought it wouldn't be for me at all, but it's lovely.

So my tip is find some time for yourself, this will make a massive difference to your life. Do what you need to do to enable this - cleaner, send ironing out, meal prep in batches, enlist kids to do jobs, robot hoover, let standards slip.

Unescorted · 14/04/2023 20:46

Stopped drinking alcohol. It has been life changing... I sleep well, I am no longer anxious, I have lost weight, I have more money and time to do things.

lazytownie · 14/04/2023 20:47

Not a dramatic change - but deciding to make my bed every morning as soon as I get up was a great improvement. If you have a duvet it's very little effort for huge gain as the room looks 'done' and you feel like you aren't slovenly.

it sort of sets me up mentally for a positive day.

Coudn't recommend it enough as a habbit. once you get into it becomes second anture.

mackthepony · 14/04/2023 20:49

Not feeling obligated to drive long distances to have fun with the kids

We live in a great area, so why drive miles??

lovemycottage · 14/04/2023 20:53

I started taking vitamins regularly.
It does make a difference, especially I'm not that exhausted all the time as I used to be.

BitchBrigade · 14/04/2023 20:54

Putting one lot of laundry on a day (at least) and not sitting for more than an hour.

I am 100x more productive in work (WFH) when I get up once an hour and do something. Usually mundane like sweep a floor, load/unload dishwasher or cycle the laundry out to hang and put a new one in, fold some etc.

You would be surprised at how much you can get done in a day in between work and it's only 5 or so mins a time.

BitchBrigade · 14/04/2023 20:55

For what it's worth, I have ADHD to struggle badly with laundry and chores in general or focussing on work for too long. Been a massive help for me managing my condition.
