Mundane words you hate the sound of....

Is there a word you hate? When you say it, it just grates on you just irritates you?

For me, its the word "bottle".

I hate what it looks like, I hate saying the word, to me it just sounds like a silly word and irritates me when I have to use it.

Probably makes no sense, but please tell me I'm not alone with an irrational hatred of a mundane word.

"Pop" when it's used in something like "Just pop a note through the door" or "Pop down to the shops".

PuttingDownRoots · 12/04/2023 21:27

Belly. Especially when talking about food and babies.

Bluebells1970 · 12/04/2023 21:31

Moist.

Makes me feel seriously ick.

golddustwomen · 12/04/2023 21:31

Nap. I fucking hate it.

midsomermurderess · 12/04/2023 21:33

Attire. It has its uses, but it is so insufferably pompous.

SmallAngryPenguinWoman · 12/04/2023 21:33

Chutney

I didn't eat it for years because I hated the word. I do know 😋

SwedishEdith · 12/04/2023 21:34

I know grown adults who pronounce the word bottle as bockle 😱

YES I CAME ON TO SAY THIS!!!

Windingdown · 12/04/2023 21:38

Swill - as in "I'm going to swill my face".

HangingOver · 12/04/2023 21:38

Manage, when said about food.

"Oh I can't manage that much cake"

"I managed some of the sandwiches"

Arghhh shut up.

I hate 'pop'. Commonly used to persuade women people to do things while simultaneously guilt-tripping them if they're reluctant, because all they have to do is 'pop' here or there, 'it'd only take five minutes' etc etc... I don't think I've ever heard anyone suggest a man should 'pop' anywhere... funny, that.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 12/04/2023 21:41

Clinical terms for sexual body parts go through me. Yes I know their accurate but fucking hell I just prefer a euphemism.

Justleaveitblankthen · 12/04/2023 21:41

Bloods. When people are having blood tests. Everyone uses it now: "Are you here for your bloods?"
Ugh 🤢

XenoBitch · 12/04/2023 21:42

Indeed.

Just that, really. When it is used as a whole sentence. Really winds me up the wrong way.

Also meds.

JustKeepSlimming · 12/04/2023 21:44

Anyone describing food as "yum". It's bad enough when they say "yummy", but "yum" is even worse.

jays · 12/04/2023 21:45

Cluster. I hate it. I have that phobia of lots of holes in things, can’t remember what it’s called and I think it’s connected to that, it makes my skin crawl and my scalp go all tight, oh it’s just a horrible word!

RoyGBivisacolorfulman · 12/04/2023 21:45

You know, when people say it after a sentence.

I had a sandwich for lunch, you know.

Well I didn't but do now.

bringincrazyback · 12/04/2023 21:45

'Tummy'. It made my teeth squeak just typing it.

Also hate 'bottom' when it's used in the context of the body part. I'd much rather hear bum or arse, even though I'm not generally a coarse person. 😄

Also grates on me when grown adults say 'poorly', and even more when it's used in news reports (in the context of 'the victim is said to be 'poorly' in hospital'). Surely 'poorly' is a baby word?

Yup I hate ‘meds’ it just annoys me so much when people say it!

Toebeans1 · 12/04/2023 21:47

I can't hear/read the word 'yum' without being reminded of this:

Yes! "Poorly" is another of mine! It's a word I'd use to describe a young child who's got something like a heavy cold. It's on the same level as "under the weather". It's not something I'd apply to adults who are properly unwell.
