Ryanair 'small personal bag'

cocksstrideintheevening · 10/04/2023 17:43

Flying with Ryanair for my sins, can anyone share an example of what they have used as the small personal bag please? Only going for two nights so happy can for what I need but don't want to get fleeced at the airport.

I've been looking at the tik tok ones on Amazon.

Thanks

Are any of you the 'wear the same pair of trousers, just change the top once or twice' type of travelers? I don't take a whole wardrobe along but I have heard about some space saving hacks which worry me on hygiene grounds.

I am (skirt/trousers and six tops swapped around over ten days, dress for wedding, plus swimsuit and towel), my husband is not (ten t shirts, shirt and suit jacket for wedding, three pairs of shoes total), but I would point out to you also that foreign countries also possess laundry facilities.

It doesn't matter what you think about what people do, the fact is that with a minor amount of brainpower applied, you can fit PLENTY in the Ryanair under chair allowance.

If you are wearing a coat for your flight remember your coat pockets. Knickers, socks and other bits can stuff into a coat pocket.

Indeed. I once went on a Thomas Cook (IIRC) flight where the weight limit on the cabin bag was 6 kilos and my rucksack was deemed 'too heavy'.

I took my purse, phone and kindle out of said bag, put them in my coat pockets and put the bag back on the scale and received the desired 'approved for hand luggage' tag.

Of course, I stopped at the next set of chairs around the corner and replaced everything from my pockets back into my bag.

You can buy bags on Amazon that are the exact size, I took one for a 2 day trip and was suprised at how much I could get in it

Until you suddenly need to sneeze and accidentally pull out a thong out of your coat pocket in the boarding queue!

Can I squeeze in and ask if they count a bag which fits the measurement but squashes out to measure more, if you see what I mean? (Small backpack with squashy side panels).

StarlightLady · 11/04/2023 17:49

@Sudeko Done that. 😀 At least they were pretty, so no embarrassment really. Fortunately, I am my mother's daughter and I don't wear greying white. Although I don't think she taught me that in case I sneezed.

@Yellowdays The bag has to squash down to completely fit in the gauging rack thingy. Some people make the mistake of measuring a bag when empty, which is larger when full.

In general terms, when booking it's worth looking at which airline has the best carry on policy as well as flight times. Sometimes what appears to be cheaper in the outset isn't. But as the OP says, on some routes you don't have a choice.

Check where the destination airport is too, some airlines land at regional airports which are way out of town, when other airports are nearer.

I travel for work and always try and keep my bag with me if possible. I would rather take less and know it's on the aircraft with me. Although if the overheads are full, all airlines can make you put a bag in the hold.

Yellowdays · 11/04/2023 17:58

Thank you. I'm not planning to put a lot in it so it should do. I'll be using it as a handbag/day bag over there. I also have a cabin bag. (Ryanair) .

Yellowdays · 11/04/2023 18:00

(Not that I'm a heavy luggage traveller! Taking gifts for relatives).

Abraxan · 11/04/2023 18:30

We have some cheap Cabin Max bags that are the exact RyanAir size. Dd prefers to just use a soft backpack which fits. We've used them for a number of short breaks. We have vacuum packing cubes which we use inside and limit all toiletries- this is easier if staying in a hotel and we don't really use much make up when away either. Wear your bulkiest outfit/shoes and a coat with pockets - you can fit some stuff in your pockets if need be then.

Abraxan · 11/04/2023 18:31

annonymousse · 10/04/2023 18:29

@gkd1234 that's a good point about absolutely no other bag. We went away for 4 days but had access to a washing machine so weee able to travel very light.

Also worth adding that this also includes any duty free purchases - they also have to fit inside the bag and can't be carried extra.

bellinisurge · 11/04/2023 18:34

Using this one. Like pp said, wear bulkiest or heaviest stuff. Take nothing that can only be worn once (apart from underwear!)

I don't change my trousers/bottoms (bar underwear) daily even at home. I only do so if I am somewhere hot so they get weary or somewhere dirty.

It's obviously easier for hot locations as summer wear is generally much thinner so lacks smaller.

I'm all for saving a bit of money, but a holiday that involves me stuffing my knickers in my coat pockets to save £20, is not one I want to go on.

bellinisurge · 11/04/2023 18:59

Then don't stick your knickers in your pocket.

Which is fine. But some people can only do holidays if they take short cuts like this.

A cabin bag is £20 per bag per flight. Sometimes to get to a destination (that isn't your choice inbthe first place) you have to take 2 flights there and 2 flights back. And sometimes you need to travel as a family of four.

That's £80pp, or £320 for the family on cabin bags. Ridiculous costs.

declutteringmymind · 11/04/2023 19:10

Also get a jacket with massive pockets!!!!

Wishiwasatailor · 11/04/2023 19:27

i regularly fly with Ryanair and use a perfect sized one from Amazon I use a camping compression bag for my clothes which means I can fit plenty in. I also have a very thin and small cross body bag that fits my passport and phone which I’ve never been questioned on

@rookiemere - At least if you stuff your knickers in your pocket you know you will have them on arrival. They can be handy 😀, particularly if it's chilly!

I've waited several days for a bag to arrive from a completely different country to the one I flew from and the one that I flew to. As I was travelling on from my airport destination it was a real pain. And that is what converted me to carry on wherever possible.

aeroliteluggage.co.uk/products/aerolite-40x20x25cm-hand-luggage-holdall-bag

I bought this, it had plenty of room for our three nights away so totally doable for two nights.

rookiemere · 11/04/2023 21:16

@StarlightLady oh I do agree it's easier to have your luggage with you, I'd just rather pay the £20 to put my knickers in a bag.

bellinisurge · 12/04/2023 08:35

With apologies for the b word which they now, I think, regret

I love Ryanair, btw

bellinisurge · 12/04/2023 08:38

... regret

Sudeko · 12/04/2023 10:01

So would you also stuff the used underwear in your pockets on the way back?
