Ryanair 'small personal bag'

Flying with Ryanair for my sins, can anyone share an example of what they have used as the small personal bag please? Only going for two nights so happy can for what I need but don't want to get fleeced at the airport.

I've been looking at the tik tok ones on Amazon.

Thanks

That's what I mean. it's only doable if you cut corners like in a tiktok challenge. that is not my idea of a holiday.

Oftentimes the cost of checking luggage/paying for cabin suitcases doubles the cost of the travel.

Argh pic didn't attach

Ozgirl75 · 10/04/2023 19:00

If it’s anything like easyJet there’s the small personal bag, or the cabin bag, and the hold bag - three separate types of bag. We flew recently with small bag and hold bag as there was no allocation left for cabin bag (and we were away for 5 nights so needed more anyway). The small bag is very small. Handbag size. The cabin bag you could easily do two days with.
You could probably do two days with the small bag but that’s not small bag plus handbag - the small bag IS the handbag.

It depends if you got the basic flight for a good price or not I suppose. I ended up paying about £50 more on average price flights as an extra which was not painless but meant that I could immediately stop searching for new bags that were too small.

I use this bag with Ryanair basic fare all the time with no issues whatsoever. Leave a little but of squeezing space just in case, but it's fine.

I have only ever seen people who wildly take the piss penalised.

Contrary to popular belief, Ryanair are mostly incentivised by turning around gates fast - which means not faffing around with every bag that might be a cm or two out in one direction. We've had four flights in the past week, with my husband using a bag that's definitely a small bit over dimensions and they didn't bat an eyelid.

I'm not saying that you should deliberately flout the rules, but people talk bullshit about Ryanair.

thecatsthecats · 10/04/2023 19:05

Oh and my husband packed two pairs of shoes, and we were both packing for 10 days.

There are plenty of ways to work with the allowance.

clary · 10/04/2023 19:06

ah I always used to take too many shoes on holiday. One pair is fine for three days surely? I had enough knickers and took a book too. It wasn’t a fashion parade. Also I prefer not to check in after a bad experience - and Ryanair will make you check your luggage if it’s too big.

op this is my bag with 30cm ruler for context.

I always go for a soft backpack on budget airlines, you get away with so much more with it on your back as they don’t really look. And can squash much more in. And take a handbag but before you board put your coat / jacket over it

It needs to fit under the seat in front of you without obstructing anyone else- so if you have an isle seat, middle & window seat people shouldn't trip over it should they wish to get up.
I used my 30l hiking backpack recently- no problems at all. But if you want to play it safe, use one of the backpacks that secondary school kids have.

We've done it with personal bag only to Denmark in sub zero temps. We had extra thermals and a full change for each day.

The trick is to roll not fold. A 25 - 30l back pack is about the right size and it will fit in the box / under the seat.

I have to be honest and say the older I get, the less I understand why you need to take huge amounts on holiday.

And yes we bought extra stuff home after.

Helenloveslee4eva · 10/04/2023 19:10

I use a kanken backpack.

Sudeko · 10/04/2023 19:12

Are any of you the 'wear the same pair of trousers, just change the top once or twice' type of travelers? I don't take a whole wardrobe along but I have heard about some space saving hacks which worry me on hygiene grounds.

I will if I have to, but if it's 2 or 3 days you can have a complete change every day. Last trip I had stuff I didn't wear and thermals.

It's doable. But as I say, learn to roll!

wantmorenow · 10/04/2023 19:18

Just used this one for a week in Spain.

Totally doable, loads of pockets and space.

Yes whatever you buy in duty free is extra to your bag too.

stevalnamechanger · 10/04/2023 19:20

I used my large Patagonia rucksack and nobody stopped me , as a personal item 🤣

YMMV !

20painauchocolats · 10/04/2023 19:21

I find they don’t check. We usually just take a standard rucksack

Sudeko · 10/04/2023 19:25

It has solved a mystery for me. I have only recently started flying with them so all this time, I was completely baffled at why these grown adults were walking around the airports with school sports bags rather than proper suitcases.

I'm going on a sunny city break next month and will travel in a dress/sandals/jacket and take the following - denim shorts, 2x tops to wear with the shorts, 2x dresses, 1x bikini, underwear and toiletries. I do.

😡That additional payment for priority is starting to hurt now!

I could probably do it if it were just my clothes but my DC would not carry their own rucksacks which is why it would not work for us. It is hard to get clothes for several people into the small bag but I can put it all in a single priority cabin bag.

Sewaccidentprone · 10/04/2023 19:32

I’m about to fly with Aer Lingus. Their website gives the specific luggage allowances - under seat cabin bag max 48x33x20 and small personal bag of 33x25x20 cm.

Both of which I believe are smaller than other airline allowances (and after a great deal of searching have eventually managed to find an underseat cabin case small enough from IT luggage.

Believe we flew with Ryanair last year and my smallest suitcase of 55cm high fitted. There’s also the weight restriction to consider - though we weren’t asked to measure or weigh our bags at the airports. I wouldn’t want to risk it though if it was 1cm too big.

My other tip is don't take stuff like shampoo/ shower gel. It's for a few days, just buy the cheapest one you can find once you get there from the local shop. Share with friends. Saves space and liquids!

Even the cheapest one would be a waste as you'd have to ditch it. Best is to get some of those small empty containers designed for travel (places like Tigger or Boots always have them) and decant a little of your normal liquids into them, so you have a little bottle of shampoo and conditioner and shower gel. These'll then fit fine into that little plastic bag you get for security, which doesn't take up much space at maximum capacity.

Standard rucksack is fine for the free carry-on. I have a 30L one now, but my previous was I think 40L (might have been 35l) and it was also fine.

fourhours · 10/04/2023 19:44

@Sudeko yes that's fair enough I don't think I'd even consider it if I were packing for kids too!

Babetti · 10/04/2023 19:46

I bought Cabin Max Metz 20L Ryanair Cabin Bag 40x20x25 for my two children for short breaks and the EcoHub Ryanair Cabin Bag for myself. Both from Amazon.

The Ecohub has more pockets so I was able to put my small crossbody bag inside it as well as all the travel docs.

Perfect for a 2/3 day trip particularly if you're wearing your heavier clothes like boots and jumpers for travelling. I rolled everything too - you'd be surprised at how much you can pack.

They fit perfectly under the seat including the aisle seat that has a smaller space.
