How often do you open your windows?

My DH hates having the windows open... Ever. I open them as the house needs fresh air otherwise it feels musty. How often do you open your windows?

Not all windows but the main ones, every day.

The bedroom ones stay open most nights too.

Bedrooms and bathrooms are never closed unless we are on holiday. Rest of the house on and off most days.

Shintyhappypeople · 10/04/2023 07:47

Everyday for a bit. Our bedroom window is only really closed when it's very windy or freezing.

willowstar · 10/04/2023 08:11

Every day. In the winter they may only be cracked open for 10 minutes or so, but now it is milder they will be cracked open in the morning and left on the latch all day.

When I first had COVID I left all windows on the latch for days and I really noticed how fresh the air felt, even though the windows were not wide open. So I am a convert. Not in the depths of winter as that would let all the heat out, but always at least for 10 minutes a day.

I am trying to instill the routine into my preteen son as his room gets really musty...blind up, crack window, make bed every morning.

Mine are open all the time. I also have the doors open. We sit with our thermals, coats and hats on. I love it.

oh wait…😂

Bedroom window open all the time. Bathroom window on the ventilation catch all the time and open when we are at home. Others open as and when. Normally fling DD's open once a week for a good airing!!

Umm maybe in July and August if very hot? Genuinely never feel the need to, especially if it's cold!

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 10/04/2023 09:41

Those thar have the windows open all day everyday- do you have the heating on at the same time? A lot of that heat is going straight out the window.

Opening for part of the day is sensible (unless you have ventilation and don't need to - which is wonderful by the way if you buy a new house look for it). But keeping the windows open and the heating on at the same time is just chucking money away.

If the heating is on in the living room then I close the windows, but the rest of the house isn't heated at all so the windows stay open.

Have to have fresh air. A breeze is heaven. Pretty much all the time.

I couldn't do this in my house. The internal doors aren't draught proof so I would still lose a lot of heat.

No of course not! I rarely have the heating on anyway. When I have the windows open I set the thermostat to 5°c so that the heating doesn't click on

Even in the middle of winter with the windows open our house doesn't drop below 13°.

Our thermostat is set to 16° normally and when we want heat on we set it to 18.5°.

We're on an exposed hill, very windy but a 1989 wooden frame house with double glazing and extra insulation in the attic. Our house is very warm and keeps the heat well.

Fresh dry air is cheaper to heat than damp air anyway.

We never use the heating between the end of March and the start of October, or overnight, even in the dead of winter.

Heating is maybe on for four hours a day at the most, but not while the windows are open, no.

Deathraystare · 10/04/2023 14:51

Mine is open all year around. Stuck like that. It is only opened a fraction as there are pigeons on the building opposite and don't want them nosing around my room!!!

skippy67 · 10/04/2023 14:58

Every day. All year round. I sleep with my bedroom window open too.

Picassa · 10/04/2023 14:59

Daily

Schmutter · 10/04/2023 18:27

I last had a cold in 2016. Can’t remember the last one my husband had.

I put much of this down to the fact we have our bedroom windows open all year round.

Heating not on upstairs, apart from the bathroom sometimes. Hate a warm bedroom. I Sleep far better in a cool room with fresh air.

And downstairs heating is only on when we are feeling the cold, and the windows downstairs would be closed.

Skybluepinky · 10/04/2023 19:02

Daily.

AreMyDucksinarow · 10/04/2023 19:10

I try to open them daily forget a lot of the time

Now the weather is milder during the day I’ve had them open a lot.

Lcb123 · 10/04/2023 19:14

Every day, at least an hour in the bedroom and bathroom. It’s horrible to keep them shut.
