My DH hates having the windows open... Ever. I open them as the house needs fresh air otherwise it feels musty. How often do you open your windows?

Everyday.

winter opened for 5 /10 mins
summer opened for an hour each morning.

my mil refused to open her windows due to spiders and bugs and her rooms were covered in condensation/mould.

Theoldwoman · 09/04/2023 22:39

Your DH is odd not to enjoy fresh air in the home.
Ours are open all year round. All of them. All the time.
The only time they are closed is during horizontal rain or if we are away on holiday.

For most of the year my windows are all open all of the time. When it's very cold, then I close the windows during the day and open again at night.
I need fresh air circulating! I cannot stand breathing stuffy stale air and cannot sleep with the window closed.

I'm the same.
Have to have windows in bedroom open or I
The room gets too hot and stuffy.

twolilacs · 09/04/2023 22:41

I can't understand people who don't open the windows to let fresh air in.

Butterfly44 · 09/04/2023 22:42

Every day. Home needs to breath and have fresh air exchanged. Not allowing this affects humidity, mould growth etc.

Catsmere · 09/04/2023 22:44

I only have one window (my unit is tiny). I open it at night to let some air in. If I open it during the day I can hear the neighbours’ televisions and radios and I can’t abide that. If I want more air I open the sliding glass door in my bedroom (opens onto the courtyard).

TheNoodlesIncident · 09/04/2023 22:44

Our bedroom windows are always open. We do shut them if there's a lot of noise or pollution, or if it's very windy at night, as it makes the blinds rattle which wakes me up. But if I do that I open them next morning. I can't sleep in a stuffy room. Bathroom window open a crack most of the time.

Downstairs windows get opened for a few hours (or all day in summer).
I know it's harder on the heating but giving the house a good airing/proper ventilation feels important and it doesn't take long to warm up the fresher air.

Bedroom windows/screen door open all year round unless very hot, very cold or wild weather. Front door left open all day, with locked screen door, when I'm in the house except winter or very hot weather.

For me it's a sign of the milder weather when the front door is left open; a token of spring.

Slimjimtobe · 09/04/2023 22:51

Most days but not all of them (we’ve loads) and I need to do this more often as I had black mould after the winter - ughhh

WhiteBobbin · 09/04/2023 22:53

Every day unless the rain is horizontal. Even in winter 10mins every morning to blast the house and moisture out. Then the heating goes on

FangsForTheMemory · 09/04/2023 22:54

Bathroom window never completely shut. upstairs landing mostly open a crack. Bedroom window any day it’s not raining. Sitting room ten minutes a day in winter, longer in summer. Kitchen to get rid of condensation.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 09/04/2023 22:56

Our bedroom window is open 24/7 unless it's really windy - even when it's snowing.

Downstairs ones are open when we're home (and awake) from around April to October.

Sarahsmith2783 · 09/04/2023 22:58

i open them every morning. If it is cold I open them less

Derrymum123 · 09/04/2023 22:59

Daily. Only close at night downstairs for security reasons or if it is bucketing down with rain.
Close downstairs if I am out for any serious amount of time.

Ohhmydays · 09/04/2023 23:00

Bathroom during the day, kitchen 24/7 unless it’s really windy. Summer time is usually 24/7 for all the windows except kid’s bedroom that gets pulled over at nap time and bed time. Winter time our bedroom stays on a latch the rest gets opened for maybe a few hours depending on weather or when i nip out for shopping etc

IntheSnowySnowyMountains · 09/04/2023 23:00

About 100 times a day to let the cats in and out Smile

We don't leave them open in winter because the house is old and draughty so plenty of fresh air gets in through the cracks. In summer the windows with bug screens are generally open when the temperature outside is cooler than the temperature inside.

ilovewispas · 09/04/2023 23:01

Am I really the only one who doesn't open their windows hardly at all in winter?!

We have cats in and out and the windows aren't well fitted so there are drafts coming through though (unfortunately!)

TheVanguardSix · 09/04/2023 23:05

Every day, all day once spring comes. Even in winter, every day. We sleep with them open year round. My father was Silesian though. So I have Open Window DNA. 😁

Littlewhitecat · 09/04/2023 23:11

Every day and my bedroom window is open all year round as I have to have fresh air at night.

Hotvimto3 · 09/04/2023 23:20

Everyday.

Changingmynameyetagain · 09/04/2023 23:25

Everyday.
DS1 never closes his window and I open the bathroom window in the morning and close it when I come to bed.
I like the idea of the German lüften, so I open the french doors in the family room every day for at least 10 minutes all year round.
DH likes our window open at night but I usually close it when I come to bed if the temperature drops below freezing outside.
Plus the cat is in and out all bloody day so I feel like the doors get opened at least once every hour to let her in.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/04/2023 23:26

Most days.

whatthebejesus · 09/04/2023 23:28

Every day! All upstairs windows are open daily.

There is at least 1 window open 24/7 365 days a year here. Regardless of the weather

Tumbleweed101 · 09/04/2023 23:40

Every day from now Until October unless heavy rain is forecast while I’m at work as the wind drives the rain through the window (on a hill).

Bedroom window will be open most nights from now as prefer a cool room.

I open for a while through winter, usually when I’m cleaning but not
if I go out.
