Have to psych myself up to wash my hair!

Anyone else have to psych themselves up to wash their hair. It is my number one most hated job. I'd rather put away laundry for 3 hours a day than wash my hair.
I'm far too reliant on dry shampoo. My hair doesn't really get greasy but from day 5 onwards I use it to freshen up and then my hair looks dull and waxy.
How do people convince themselves to wash their hair? Mine is so long and thick and frizzy that it takes forever to dry and straighten. Plus I shower at night so by 9pm I really can't be arsed with the whole rigmarole.
I start work at 6.30am so not a chance I'm doing the hair routine at 5.30am on a week day!
I just need to force myself to do it don't I?

Yes! Promised myself I would do it tonight and currently watching Starstruck on TV. I really have to psych myself up 😂

Mumoftwoinprimary · 08/04/2023 20:57

I am trying to remember the last time I went over 24 hours without washing my hair. Possibly when I was in labour with Dd (now 13). (When I was in labour with ds I stood in the shower to ease the pain and washed my hair between contractions!)

I have very fine hair so it doesn’t need any kind of styling.

More than 24 hours without washing makes it feel (and look) horrible though.

@savagelover I could have written this. It's the faffing. Much better now I've got a Dyson Airwrap, but still hate it.

Curly girl here . Don’t brush when dry . Wash with conditioner and then leave conditioner in . Try the LOC method; leave in , oil and curl cream. Dry until 70% dry . Silk pillow case & pineapple at night . I feel your pain as it’s a big bloody job !

I would love love love to shave it off! But I'm overweight with a huge double chin, so it's never going to look attractive on me! Other people look great with shaved heads.

I'm sorry but this made me 😂
I'm sure you are being far too harsh on yourself but I say exactly the same at the thought of having it shaved off
I don't have many redeeming features but my hair is also a pain in the backside and I delay washing it as often as possible too

yellowhedges · 08/04/2023 21:00

I dry my hair whilst watching a tv program. Put subtitles on. Then straighten etc whilst program finishes.
It doesn't feel like a chore then.
Buy a strong powered hairdryer and that'll cut the time down. Thick long hair here too.

DHsPoorBack · 08/04/2023 21:00

Mine is thick, and incredibly long. I despise washing it. It's lovely having it this long when it's done properly, so on the one day a year I bother my arse to do it properly, I get all "oh look at it, I couldn't possibly cut it."

Two things that have helped me:

  1. Dyson hairdryer. Dries it in 10 minutes, where my old hairdryer took nearly 40.
  1. Learning a nice quick up do. I pile mine on the top of my head, messy bun sort of style with a serious heavy duty hair bobble. Then I curl and flick just the tufty bits poking out of the bun. Straightening and styling my hair down, is a good hour. Messy flicky bun is under 5 minutes.

So technically I can dry and style it in 15 mins now. But after 30 years of having to fuck about for over an hour, I can't shake the not wanting to wash my hair feeling, it's kind of engrained.

LadyShrek2k19 · 08/04/2023 21:01

I know you've said that a shaved head wouldn't work because you're overweight with a double chin, but if you're having it in a ponytail all the time, how different from the front would it actually look if you shaved it off or had it super short?

VeronicaBeccabunga · 08/04/2023 21:07

I have dry hair that can be bushy/frizzy and I fairly recently treated myself to a Tangle Teaser [they might spell it Teezer or something silly] hairbrush.

It has made a big difference, the knots and tangles come out easily, wet or dry. I have also found that regular brushing has smoothed my hair down a lot. I always found that bristle brushes or spiky plastic ones seemed to make my hair full of static and frizzier so spent ages combing it through and dragging out the knots.

I keep mine just past shoulder length, it is regularly trimmed to keep the ends blunt and straight, but I wear it up in a pony tail or claw-clip or some kind of bun/pleat/knot.

And it is done!!!

I hate it as well! Regular blow dries help, but I still dread when I have to do it myself.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/04/2023 21:14

I'm with you @savagelover

IHeartKingThistle · 08/04/2023 21:15

Omg I thought it was just me. I hate it so much! And I have a bob that doesn't even take that long!

Tumbleweed101 · 08/04/2023 21:21

I wash mine pretty much every day when in the shower. Never dry or straighten it though and usually dry by time I leave the house. Can't imagine not washing it for so long. Interesting how we all deal with it so differently.

Sensibletrousers · 08/04/2023 21:31

I’m the same. Waist length as I love having a massive messy bun on top of my head, never wear it down as I can’t bear the feeling of it on my neck, but HATE washing it. Having to comb it out with conditioner in the shower and all the loose hairs sticking to every part of my skin and in my crack lol UGH, fishing massive hairballs out the plug yuk… 🤢

Ive managed two weeks by using dry shampoo and then a headscarf- ironically I get loads of compliments when i wear the scarf and have to stop myself admitting it’s purely to cover greasy roots!

I also get compliments when I wear it down as it’s such a shock. I always end up shoving it up after an hour though!

bizzywiththefizzy · 08/04/2023 21:33

Ha! I despise the whole hair washing thing as well , but I have an illness and if my breathing gets bad I'll end up in Hospital . What I don't want is to end up on oxygen unable to wash my hair for even longer . The humiliation would be immense . Ditto for shaving .

bellac11 · 08/04/2023 21:36

Your hair is certainly beautiful OP but why so long, chin length bob would be lovely, plus a bit thinned out for sure.

Ashia · 08/04/2023 21:36

I donhate washing my hair but not as much as you. Sounds like the straighteningnis such a waste of time. Just accept the frizz and weigh it down with moroccan oil.

Maple2023 · 08/04/2023 21:36

Mine is the drying. 40 mins with a diffuser. Bored!

Crucible · 08/04/2023 21:42

An undercut? That's what I'd do if I had your hair. I have the opposite hair, wash frequently. Lately it's got knottier as it's too long. and I use Johnson's detangling spray on it, it helped.

Spareprincess · 08/04/2023 21:44

Washing hair is sooo annoying, such a thing/process.

However the worse thing ever is changing a bed. It takes me about 10 minutes to do...and that's after I've ignored it for hours.

OnaBegonia · 08/04/2023 21:47

If it's affordable get a Brazilian blow dry and cut to shoulder level, saves a lot of time.

ThreeRingCircus · 08/04/2023 21:52

A Brazilian blow dry/Keratin straightening treatment is your friend OP. My hair was dreadful, SO thick and frizzy and I hated dealing with it. Now I get it done every 4-6 months and it's a doddle. I don't need to straighten it anymore and it just blow dries smooth even with a rough blow dry. It's expensive but so worth it for me to not have the daily hassle with my hair.

It's really important to use shampoo and conditioner formulated for chemically straightened hair though.... nothing with sulfates or salt otherwise it ruins the treatment.

WonderingWanda · 08/04/2023 22:11

savagelover · 08/04/2023 20:36

Mine is just poor laziness. It's such a faff of washing, conditioning, brushing out tangles, then serum, dry, straighten, brush again etc etc.

This is your problem. You don't need to do all the straightening and you aren't supposed to brush wet hair because it's more likely to break. I wash mine most days, it's long and straight. Takes 5 mins to wash and mostly I just towel dry it and let it dry naturally unless it's the depths of winter.

Heatherbell1978 · 08/04/2023 22:19

This used to be me - very thick and frizzy long hair that takes an age to dry and straighten out. But then I got it chipped into a big and got an undercut. Not many people know that literally half of my hair is shaved off underneath as I wear it down and still have a lot of it. But it's massively reduced drying time.
