Anyone up for a ‘sort yourself out’ supportive encouraging thread?

SpringOn · 06/04/2023 19:18

Hi,
I’m 47, feeing old. I’ve very much lost my way with style, exercise, hair, you name it.
I need to:
lose two stone
decide what to do with my witchy mostly grey hair (I’ve been growing out dark brown dye for 10 months, decided to go grey, but I feel so old! Don’t know whether to go back to dye or stay grey).
mu wardrobe is a disaster. I have some decent smart work stuff but my casual clothes are basically lairy leggings and hoodies. I am a size 20.
My house needs a good clean and de clutter
I want to grow veg and have lovely flowers in the garden

Good bits:
I have a great husband, three fab kids and a job I love
I walk the dog for about 20 mins every day

Anyone want to join for self- improvement on an encouraging thread?

Intrigued by the moth cleaning. I have never done this. 😛 (well done you though).

I have run with DD, had healthy brek and lunch and chopped veggies for dinner (leek and mushroom stroganoff) and spent an hour sorting the piles of crap on the landing. Barely made a dent in it which is depressing. Grocery shop next and then cook dinner and then sit on my arse. Also listened to sleep story last night as recommended by PP - loved it! Will use again.

EducatingArti · 08/04/2023 16:23

Thank you @BunsenBurnerBaby ( are you a chemistry teacher?)
I've never done it before either but a family member has had such a terrible problem with moths that I know I need to address it straight away. Once they get established, it is really difficult to deal with!!
I'm impressed by all the healthy eating going on!
I need to go out and get petrol. I really don't want to!!

SpringOn · 08/04/2023 18:09

Hi everyone! Sounds as though you are all doing brilliantly. How are you getting on with drinking that water @Lostinplaces ? Those moths won’t know what hit them, @EducatingArti and I hope you managed to go get the petrol you needed.
@BunsenBurnerBaby well done on the run and the lunch. Decluttering is really hard as it always seems to get worse before it gets better and is really tiring. I have to stop before I am ready to stop so that I don’t leave more mess than before I started!

I’m a bit done in here, we’ve cleaned the house, made pavlova, braised cabbage and cauli cheese for tomorrow. Also walked the dog and re planted some of the seeds that got eaten, this time with anti mice devices (covered with plastic trays). DH has mown the lawn.

How has everyone else got on?

Thanks @SpringOn!
I'm sort of a gym person but not good enough to advise others 😅 I have a PT and he just tells me what to do and I do it.

  • I have 4.5 stone to lose
  • I've mostly got control of my breakfasts and lunches but have noticed that my snacking has gone up so I need to sort that out!
  • I've cut down on alcohol massively
  • I have a fair few health problems currently so am just trying to get to a lifestyle that can help improve my conditions!

Thanks for having me and I hope you're all off to a great start on your journeys xx

ColdHandsHotHead · 08/04/2023 18:31

I've just walked 8K steps. On top of the three hours' housework this morning, I must be well over 10K for the day. My feet are throbbing. Trying to think of something I'd like for dinner but I'm dog tired so it has to be quick.

Villagetoraiseachild · 08/04/2023 18:37

Hey everyone, second longish bike ride today. Belly flobbing against my thighs, haha, makes me laugh!
The exercise is such a mood improver and helps me sleep better. Plus a few social interactions. You are right about the keystone/cornerstone Spring On.

Well I have polished off my quota of Easter chocolate, a little prematurely, but what's done is done. Plan to make a lemon and almond cake for tomorrow so as not to feel deprived, then truly on the wagon once that has gone. Holidays early July so want to feel healthy, fit and svelter.

Visited my local garden centre also and they have some great fruit trees in. Going to read up tonight as to which best to get.
Treated self to a box of Commodities perfume samples for a fiver and yes, I too have shaved my legs, the annual deforestation after six months of growth!
Good to read how peeps are getting on.

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 08/04/2023 20:25

So much for doing better. I've ate 100 weight of Easter eggs today and only drank fizzy pop.

Once again I'm shattered and wishing I could treat myself better Confused

EducatingArti · 08/04/2023 20:28

@Imamumgetmeoutofhere I have also spent all day eating chocolate and crisps!

Lostinplaces · 08/04/2023 20:35

@SpringOn no good today. Have neglected to drink much of anything except a 500ml bottle of 7up Free 🤦🏻‍♀️ will try again tomorrow.

GreenMarigold · 08/04/2023 21:09

Well despite a family do and a village event I’ve managed to keep within my calorie limits for the day, and my intermittent fasting hours.

I also went for an evening walk to take my step count to 10,000.

Haven’t touched my pile of paperwork yet but overall I feel today has gone well.

Whatliesbeneath707 · 08/04/2023 21:53

Great thread @SpringOn
Please may I join in?
I am 50 yrs young but feeling quite old! Everything is aching, and things are an effort when they shouldn't be.
I have started journalling regularly & I'm finding it helpful. I'm also meditating regularly too. I'm finding that my sleep is a big issue now that I'm perimenopausal. I love the recommendation of the Nothing Happens podcast! They will be lovely to listen to when I wake at 3am most days.
I need to be more consistent with a skin care regimen. My skin is very dry due to the hormonal fluctuations.

My big changes are linked to diet & exercise.
I've realised that I don't eat how I want to & the reason is that I have 2 family members with ASD and so it's easier to fall in with their preferences rather than cooking myself a separate meal. I need to work out a way to all eat together, but for my meal to be in line with my healthy eating plan (higher protein, lots of veg and wholegrain carbs).
My joints feel wooden & sore, so I want to restart yoga at home. Think I might try a short 15 minute practice first thing in the morning (5-6am) when the house is quiet. I do need to either restart swimming or go walking too, as I need something to improve my stamina & to increase my heart rate.

I've done well today foodwise & I've worked hard in the garden. I'm determined to have a pretty flower filled garden for the summer. I now feel a bit broken after all the activity, but I'm pleased I pushed myself to do it.

On a decluttering note, have you heard of the Kon Mari method? Sounds extreme but it really works - look it up (Marie Kondo). I did it a few years ago & it really is life changing!

I look forward to reading your updates. You've all really motivated me to get myself together 😊

HouseByTheSeaside · 08/04/2023 22:34

Can someone tell me about journaling please? How does it help?

Same here. Swap fizzy pop for wine. We had guests.
Have a lunch out tomorrow with another group. Planning to drive so I don't drink. Then will start detox plan!

ChristmasLightsLover · 08/04/2023 22:48

Hello! Would like to join you all please. Mid 40's. Just starting to prioritise myself. Many stones to lose but also need to work out how to incrementally improve across the board.

Will be back tomorrow to read full thread and learn from shared goals! Halo

Whatliesbeneath707 · 09/04/2023 06:42

@HouseByTheSeaside, I use journaling to process my thoughts & to get any worries out of my head and down onto paper. I also use it to goal set and set my intentions for the day/week. I find it helpful to look back on too.

You can use a normal/nice notebook or a journal with prompts in. I use this one from seasalt, as I like the layout & prompts: https://www.seasaltcornwall.com/cornwall-illustrations-wellness-journal

I also follow Sinem Kartal on Instagram. She does journal prompts & you can join her live to journal too.

The Mental Health Benefits of Journaling

Journaling can help you process emotions and help you cope with the symptoms of mental health conditions, like depression and anxiety.

BunsenBurnerBaby · 09/04/2023 06:43

Morning, friends!

Today is not going to be pretty for food: but I already know that (this is a really hard weekend to decide to clean up our acts: note to self and others - be kind to yourself about that).

@what lies beneath: yes, we have same with 2x (or likely 4x) ASD and food issues. It makes it REALLY hard.

I love Marie Kondo but my issue isn’t about letting go of stuff emotionally it’s what to do with it. I suffer from climate anxiety and hate the idea of stuff that might have a use elsewhere ending up in Landfill. Charity shops round us don’t accept books and I sold the ones I can yesterday so now have overwhelming decisions about what to do with the next set of piles (old tech, ikea kallax cupboard inserts, books …).

My three things for today:

Dont let mum & sis wind me up
Sit in the sun for a bit
30 minutes on piles

Hope you all have a good day xx

SpringOn · 09/04/2023 07:07

Good morning everyone and Happy Easter!

A big welcome to @ChristmasLightsLover and @Whatliesbeneath707 , it’s wonderful to have you here.

Putting ourselves last seems to be an issue for so many of us.

@BunsenBurnerBaby we don’t have any ASD in the family but I definitely do meals that everyone else likes but aren’t necessarily what I would choose. ‘30 minutes on piles’ (specially when paired with ‘sit in the sun for 30 minutes’) made me 🥴 till I realised you meant the decluttering piles 😂

I also hear you on ‘letting go’ of stuff. Our local tip does a lot of recycling of things, even wood and electronics. Maybe some could go there? I’ve often wondered about making one of those ‘help yourself’ book stands outside my house to get rid of all the books I have read.

@Lostinplaces do you have a water bottle? Fill it up and keep it next to where you sit. I used to put a Berocca vitamin tablet in mine to make it taste nice and up my vitamins when I first started to drink more water.

Low expectations from me today as I have my mum and dad round and no run today as it is a rest day.

Have a healthy breakfast
Take my vitamins
Drink 2l water
Clear kitchen of roast detritus before coming to bed

Have a lovely day everyone.

@SpringOn I filled up my 2ltr bottle last night and I have it on the floor next to my bed, have had a few sips on waking this morning. Thanks for the berocca tip I’ll pick some up tomorrow. I’m going to the circus at 12pm today with DH and DD, going by bus so will get some steps in. Thankfully I’ve woken up not fancying any chocolate so fingers crossed I won’t eat many eggs today!

Lostinplaces · 09/04/2023 07:40

Happy Easter! 🐣

sheepdreams · 09/04/2023 08:01

Hi could I join you please? I need an overhaul! Need to lose 2 stone, exercise more and deal with my recurrent insomnia! I have a stressful job and end up putting my own needs last it’. I’ve started fast 800 ( a week ago) to try and lose the weight and apart from a blip last days -Easter food I have found it fairly easy to stick to with some lovely recipes.

Im 59 and it feels like if I don’t get my act together now then when! I’ve just joined a gym but feeling v anxious about going! I already walk 10k a day.

I don’t like the clothes I wear (same 2 pairs of jeans and a skirt that fit me) and cd do with a style overhaul.

trying to grow greys out and had highlights from hairdresser but there is still a v noticeable difference between colour and grey coming through which makes me feel shabby. Overall my confidence is in its boots and I wonder where the person is I used to be!

My 3 things from tomorrow:

back on fast 800 plan
drink 2 litres 💦 I don’t like it so terrible at this.
Book swimming for Tuesday.

Happy Easter to all. Let’s do this💪

SpringOn · 09/04/2023 08:21

Great start @Lostinplaces , have an amazing time at the circus. Try to really BE there, if you know what I mean. Step back a moment, take a few breaths, look at the joy on your DC face, feel it in yourself. Have a wonderful day.

Welcome @sheepdreams ! You’re in the right place 😁. Sounds like you are doing great on Fast 800, it’s great when you find something that suits! I’m in the same place as you with my grey hair. Growing it out but with frequent regrets/ indecision about whether I should go back to brown. Grey actually suits my eyes better (also grey) but I think it probably really ages me. I am 47. 10k a day is amazing. Or is it 10k steps? Either way that’s a lot more than I am managing!

A slice of lemon in my water helps me get it drunk. Or Berocca as I mentioned above. Have a great day!

Can I hop aboard? Lost my way significantly these past 3 years. Regained all the baby weight and a stone on top. Since Covid I seem impervious to losing weight at all. Zero will power. Need to shed 2 stone min to bring me back to healthy BMI.
Have restarted running. Working on drinking more water. Joined a subscription online gym. Have used once 😬

Doro371 · 09/04/2023 08:44

Good morning,
Can I join, too? Just been reading the whole thread and you seem to be my people 😀. Same problems like most of you - I KNOW I "just" have to exercise, drink water, eat better and tidy up to improve my life - and then another day has passed eating chocolate instead of fruit, staring at m phone and drinking barely anything 🤷🏻‍♀️.
But I had a great start to this day - my husband and 9-year-old are still asleep 😳 (am in Germany and it's nearly 10 o'clock here! Unheard of!) and I'm sitting in the sun with a coffee. So I decided to force them to go for a walk with me whenever they get up. And I have had 2 glasses of water to start my day - which is more than I sometimes have the whole day 🫣.
Have a beautiful day, all of you!

Rshard · 09/04/2023 09:16

I’d love to join too please! I’ve read the whole thread and it’s basically describing me and how I feel!

I’ve been feeling a bit lost recently, my dd is almost 18 and becoming more and more independent, dh has a hobby (I don’t mind this at all) and more and more I’m at home alone and end up on my phone or eating crap.

I also need to lose about 3 stone and need to get back into exercise - so the exercise is what I can do to fill the time when dd and dh are busy.

I’m too good at making excuses to not do something, I haven’t got time, dd needs picking up.

So for me:
break the bad habits
stop making excuses not to…
exercise every day
low carb eating and IF
put myself first sometimes

Thanks, this thread has been the push I need

IHateLegDay · 09/04/2023 09:49

Happy Easter!
