Who are good male role models?

Just seen discussion about this on Twitter. We do talk a lot about the bad ones, but what public figures should our boys look up to?

Dwayne Johnson always seems pretty good to me - he seems like a really caring dad, but he's still 'strong' if that's something a boy finds important and he doesn't take himself too seriously.

NB, I think boys should be able to look up to women too of course. That's why I thought it was good to have a female Doctor in Doctor Who. I didn't think Whittaker was that great but the fact is DS loves Doctor Who and really liked her in it so I think it's a good thing he has a female hero figure out of that.

We had this discussion on our multi national slack group the other week and someone pointed out who was secretly reading our group by postin the twitter thread, our overall consensus was around age

If they are young then Mr Beast, although I realise children watching MN is a no no on MN.

Anyone naming someone from sport/football/Keanu/Obama is just scraping the internet listicles, my DS2 who is football mad respects Rashford for who he is but he wears the wrong coloured shirt, he really looks up to Grealish and the superstars like Messi etc. This was kind of replicated among our slack group when talking about sport stars, I shouldn't need to say but we are not white to try and explain the deeper conversations around team sports.

Considering our headquarters are in Silicon Bay Area the one that shocked the group the most is those with older teenagers suggesting early speaches from Jordan Peterson etc.

Overall though male family first, I am raising my boys in being confident in being boys just as much as I am my daughter being confident in being a women, but I admit in openly watching Mr Beast with my youngest so I don't have to talk football 24/7

Dermott O’Leary?

Pearfacebananapoop · 04/04/2023 23:08

Michael Buble puts his family first publicly a lot (writing this and hoping he's not a well known perv).

Well I don’t think he’s a perv no but he’s a bit shit to his wife from what I’ve heard.

Andy Murray

Not necessarily. What if they have spent time following that person, for example listening to their speeches and watching their actions. Some people do read books and take time to educate themselves and make critical judgment. Not everybody hones in on lazy journalism or social media for their information.

Pedro Pascal

Andy Murray +1

Barack Obama left the bulk of the wife work to Michelle...I know you can't have everything!

ASixPackAndTheRadio · 04/04/2023 23:21

Grealish? Bloody hell. Drink driving isn’t anything to look up to for a start,

OhMerde · 04/04/2023 23:36

Steven Bartlett. His Diary of a CEO podcasts are really thoughtful and he seems to advocate for women on them.

RenoDakota · 04/04/2023 23:55

Chris Packham
Tom Hanks
Keanu Reeves
Brian Cox
Dan Walker

I know him in real life through work. Unfortunately he's a proper nasty piece of work and extremely misogynistic. I can't believe the BBC have hired him after all the reports of bullying from former staff members of his, not to mention the smoke and mirrors nature of his finances and business dealings.

Deathraystare · 05/04/2023 09:31

I am thinking Neil Oliver.

My father
my brother
my ex husband

PuttingDownRoots · 05/04/2023 09:37

I've always thought that children take more influence from people actually in their lives. So for my DDs and men

Father, grandfathers and uncle (obviously)
The male TA
The rugby coaches
The Scout leader
Teachers at Secondary school (neither had a male teacher at Primary)

They don't seem to find sport stars, actors etc inspirational.

Trollsinmyeggbox · 05/04/2023 10:31

Oopswediditagain2023 · 04/04/2023 22:15

Marcus rashford definitely.
I'd also say current day Tyson fury
Lil nas X
Tom Holland

Sorry, I was so baffled by the notion anyone might think Fury was a good role model that I quoted the wrong post.

If what you say is true, I think he’ll fit in very well at the BBC then.

Ursualesther · 05/04/2023 11:20

Public figures? Can’t say I’m really bothered about them being good role models for my children

all about the men (and people) actually in their life’s. Day in and day out. The men that they talk with, walk with, eat with, laugh with, argue with, debate with and so on

Lionoso · 05/04/2023 11:35

Lewis Hamilton.

And yes he does pay tax, before someone quips that nonsense line.

He came from an ordinary background, gives a lot of time and money to charity and is a great role model, especially to young boys.

Can I ask how you know he pays the correct tax amount payable?
