Peeing during the night

LaPerduta · 04/04/2023 12:59

Can anyone suggest why I have started needing to get up to pee several times during the night?

I'll try to list salient points:
Female, 48 (but not menopausal)
No kidney issues
No UTIs/STDs
Bladder of steel during the day
No pelvic floor issues
Do not drink tea, coffee, Coke or alcohol
Not on any medication that should cause this
Not overweight
Light sleeper, but not insomniac

Any ideas welcome!

Are you drinking more liquids than usual? Feeling thirsty? Tired?

Nope, none of those. Should have included them in the list!

At 48 this could well be your first indication of peri-menopause.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 04/04/2023 13:09

@WashAsDelicates agreed.

I didn't realise it was unusual to wee in the night I've done it for so many years...

Then started ovestin cream and HRT and now I go all night without weeing. It's really odd for me staying in bed all night!

Hobnobswantshernameback · 04/04/2023 13:09

Peri menopause
speak to your GP

Nixer · 04/04/2023 13:12

Yep, perimenopause and possible early stage vaginal atrophy. Get checked out - if you catch VA early you might avoid some of the worst of it.

LaPerduta · 04/04/2023 13:12

I should have been clearer!

I am NOT menopausal, or peri-menopausal. Not probably not, definitely not.

How can you be so sure?

It can creep up on you. Not every woman starts with hot flushes.

Umm.... the only way you know if you're peri menopausal is through symptoms,

You have just described experiencing peri symptom.

You are the appropriate age to be expecting to experience peri symptoms.

AnchorWHAT · 04/04/2023 13:41

Have you had recent blood test for type 2 diabetes? Thats one of the symptoms.

BarbaraofSeville · 04/04/2023 13:42

(Pre) diabetes is the other obvious consideration.

But unless you've already had a hysterectomy then it would be quite unusual for you to not be at least perimenopausal at your age.

I also didn't realise it was unusual to not go at night. I'm up twice a night like clockwork.

VioletCharlotte · 04/04/2023 13:43

How much water do you drink during the day and how long before going to bed do you have your last drink?

I had fairly comprehensive bloods done just a few months ago. Everything was fine.

OK, this isn't how peri-menopause works. And you're the right age for it.

I'd suggest diabetes (do you have some dipsticks at home?), or peri-menopause.

Doggydarling · 04/04/2023 13:47

Despite being so absolutely certain you're not peri menopausal is may still be worth trying vagifem or similar. Can I ask how you're so certain you're not peri menopausal? I was getting up during the night for a long time before any other symptoms appeared, wish I'd known about peri and started hrt much sooner. Getting a proper night's sleep once I started vagifem improved my life so much.

Bingo! Well, almost. I've had a double oophorectomy so am on HRT. This hasn't been altered for at least a decade (and I have had oestrogen levels checked and seen my endocrinologist in the meantime).

Ah, OK - so you've gone through surgical menopause.

A moderate amount. I'm often thirsty before going to bed, so should probably try to bring my last drink forward to avoid this.

Yes, thirty years ago. So not a recent thing that would account for these changes.

OP posts:
LuckOfTheDrawer · 04/04/2023 13:52

I still think it could be related though - so it could be a symptom of menopause or diabetes or something else.

I don't, but worth investigating. Would I not have symptoms during the day, though?

OP posts:
LuckOfTheDrawer · 04/04/2023 13:58

I'm not sure TBH - I think maybe people don't notice they're going to the bathroom slightly more during the day, but they notice that they can no longer make it through the night.

You can buy Siemens urine dipsticks on Amazon.

LaPerduta · 04/04/2023 14:00

Not saying it isn't worth checking, but I don't have any of the other symptoms of diabetes and there is no diabetes in my family.

You're 48, you're perimenopausal, most women are from 35 whether or not they realise it, according to my doctor

Clearly you know my medical history better than I do!
