Peeing during the night

LaPerduta · 04/04/2023 12:59

Can anyone suggest why I have started needing to get up to pee several times during the night?

I'll try to list salient points:
Female, 48 (but not menopausal)
No kidney issues
No UTIs/STDs
Bladder of steel during the day
No pelvic floor issues
Do not drink tea, coffee, Coke or alcohol
Not on any medication that should cause this
Not overweight
Light sleeper, but not insomniac

Any ideas welcome!

Can be a symptom of Parkinson's Disease OP. Worth looking at other PD symptoms as many of them are creeping/gradual)subtle.

Thankfully I don't have any of the other symptoms.

I go two to four times each night and have done for decades, but I do drink a lot of water.

I could have written this OP. Identical save for I do drink coffee tea and alcohol but no differently to before. I’m 46.

I went to my Gp recently and got tested for a UTI which was clear. Despite me mentioning this to her specifically she didn’t say it was anything of concern, in fact she didn’t comment further! Certainly no mention of diabetes etc.

carriebradshawwithlessshoes · 04/04/2023 16:26

A perhaps unsatisfactory answer but possibly just something that increases with age. Or something that comes on and then just runs it’s course (had something years ago that fell into that category, had tests, meds, all sorts, eventually it just went and hasn’t recurred since, thankfully.)

Thanks everyone.

My elderly mum had a few years with unexplained urinary continence issues. The GP tried all sorts of drugs. Oxubutinin helped for a while, but caused her too many side effects - possibly was incompatible with another medication she was on. Conclusion was that it was one of those aging things, which she would just have to put up with. As you can imagine dm was not happy about that.

After a few years, with the incontinence worsening all the time until she was constantly leaking, dm saw an acupuncturist for something else entirely. The therapist realised that dm had incontinence and offered to treat it as well.

After 3 or 4 sessions dm's incontinence was cured. The effect was that dramatic.

Definitely look into the other conditions posted here, but would you consider acupuncture?

That's astonishing!

I would consider acupuncture, but I don't have any issues with incontinence, nocturnal or otherwise.

With your medical history, could it be anything like a prolapse? (I mean, I don't know this would be possible with your previous surgery).
You've obviously been through a lot; I'm sorry you're going through this too. I hope it improves.

GoodVibesHere · 04/04/2023 19:58

Isn't it just that you're getting older?

carriebradshawwithlessshoes · 04/04/2023 21:02

OP with myself I do wonder if it’s a bit psychological. Sometimes I find myself laying there thinking about if I need to go then after if that’s it, if I am going to need to go again before morning. Then if I wake in the night, immediately thinking have I woken because I need the loo etc. it becomes a bit of a self fulfilling prophesy.

hexsnidgett · 04/04/2023 21:18

I have found that sometimes it is psychological and a bit of a habit. If you are concerned about having to get up in the night to go to the loo, then you will feel like you have to go.

Thank you.

No, it's not prolapse, I'm fairly confident about that. But thanks for suggesting it.

I think you are the most polite OP I've seen in a long time.

As some others have said, it's likely you are not drinking enough during the day (therefore your body will "hold on" to as much as it can) then while you sleep your circadian rhythm and hormone regulation is different and you produce more urine which is needed to balance your salts, blood pressure, flush out toxins and waste products etc. Its like your body was trying to hold on to as much water as it could during the day then realised it wasn't going to get any more so needed to catch up with urine production.

Voyager54 · 05/04/2023 04:54

FWIW As a male in my 60's I have had the situation as you many years and I think it is something that you have to manage. No fluids after 8/9pm.

When I speak to other people in my age group we all have the same issues and have had for a number of years.

I am a member of a couple of sporting clubs and have noticed the frequency of people having to go to the loo.

The last thing I would mention is that it can be mind over matter.

Hope this helps.

YukoandHiro · 05/04/2023 05:02

Definitely get your Hba1c to check for type 2 diabetes. I had gestational diabetes and even when it was under control i was peeing all night (more than a normal pregnancy)

VioletCharlotte · 05/04/2023 07:12

Try increasing how much water you drink during the day (2 - 2.5 litres). Then nothing to drink for 90 mins before bed. This worked for me.

GooseberryCinnamonYogurt · 05/04/2023 07:15

It seems whatever anyone suggests, it's poo poo'd

Thank you very much!

Making a concerted effort to drink more from today.

Well maybe it seems that way, but I'm not going to invent symptoms I don't have!

In case anyone is remotely interested, over the last few weeks I've been drinking more (mainly water) earlier in the day and less in the evening. This seems to have improved the situation considerably.

CosyCoffee · 20/04/2023 15:58

That's interesting OP thanks for the update- I am going to try this as I have the same issue, getting up three times a night to pee. I drink mainly coffee during the day but I'm going to start drinking more water and see if it helps.
