Would you expect a refund?

Hi! Imagine if you ordered a few dishes from a caterer. Total came to 60 pounds. You paid in advance.

You were supposed to pick your food up on Friday but are too busy so tell the caterer you would pick the food up on Saturday instead but Saturday comes and you're not able to pick it up (and caterer can't deliver because they live around 1 hour away).
Sunday the food would go bad.

Would you expect a refund, a partial refund, or no refund?

Caterer provided the full service and goods they were paid for. Not their fault it wasn't picked up. So no refund.

This. Out of curiosity what did you do with the food in the end?

Hiddenvoice · 01/04/2023 16:27

No refund, the client changed plans last minute and that js not the caterers fault. The caterer chooses if they want a deposit or money up front when they set up their business. If it is money up front then the client agreed to this when they placed the order and were aware of what they were getting.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 01/04/2023 16:31

No refund. The caterer kept their side of the deal.

It will be donated this evening if he doesn't collect it by then. He said he would try to come

Any customer who thinks they are entitled to a refund is a CF

The caterer has bought the food, spent time cooking the food, paid the rent, heating bills etc to make the food and possibly turned down other jobs. Just because the customer is disorganized the caterer should not be out of pocket at all

diddl · 01/04/2023 16:40

Tbh if the food wasn't collected as arranged on Friday I wouldn't have been giving them much of today to collect it by.

Sounds as if they just cba!

bloodywhitecat · 01/04/2023 16:43

I would expect no refund, it would be different if the caterer was the one who couldn't deliver but if the client can't, or won't, collect then that's on them.

Yes, but I'm trying to see it from the client's poin of view as they said that most people would pay a 50% deposit and the rest once they picked the food up

Then the customer should have gone with a company that offered those terms. They didn't. They engaged you, with your terms, so no refund as per those terms. You did your part, customer wasted their own food by failing to collect. You need to be more ruthless than you are or customers will walk all over you and your business will fail.

CaptainHammer · 01/04/2023 16:48

Hell no don’t give him a refund!

BrieAndChilli · 01/04/2023 16:49

What’s the food? I am a bit perplexed that someone would go to the trouble of ordering food presumably for an occasion and then just not collect it?

Ducksinthebath · 01/04/2023 17:01

I can’t believe someone would be so brazen as to ask for a refund! Not calling you a liar OP, just shocked at the brass neck on some people.

Definitely no refund. It isn't the caterer's fault in anyway.

That chicken looks incredible!

Donated to whom? It's quite okay to eat the food yourself (with family/neighbours/friends) instead of having it go bad. You'd still not owe the customer a refund.

Honoraryuce · 01/04/2023 17:10

No refund

Donated to a couple of local families for ramadan's iftar

We had already planned on eating out with friends today so couldn't have it, and most of it would have to waste as it is just my husband and I

Ah okay, that makes sense. It's the customer's loss. Enjoy your day. @Keymap

arethereanyleftatall · 01/04/2023 17:18

I learnt very early on in my own business you have to be strict with your ts and cs and stick to them. Every time, every single time, I bent my rules to help someone, they stiffed me. So, I don't do it anymore.

JKTrolling · 01/04/2023 17:57

Cancel the cheque!

They're stock photos. Weird the OP is suggesting they're not. Hmm.

SnaccidentsHappen · 01/04/2023 18:25

No refund, the goods are still available even if the customer can no longer collect and the arrangement was they they would collect not that you would deliver.

misssunshine4040 · 02/04/2023 14:12

@TriciaMcMillan could they be stock pics from her own website, so still her own work?

AgnesX · 02/04/2023 14:17

If you were meant to pick up and didn't then no refund.
