Good advice here. Bump

Only by using the alert system presumably

So could they just send a text message through this system, with no sound or vibration if these were turned off on the phone?

Hellamegafuckup · 01/04/2023 10:50

Thank you for this. I have a phone in my safe room created for me by housing and police. Its not a secret as such but my 6 year old would find it wierd

No its going to terrify the fuck out of people and also make vulnerable people even more vulnerable.

😮

I think some people are being a little dramatic about this

I'd say a good majority of people now know about this and many more will by the 23rd. They can therefore make sure anyone vulnerable has their phone sorted in time. If worst case scenario someone gets startled by it, the message will probably state that it's just a test anyway

I've read you will have to tap the message to clear it before you can use the device. Many people will have been taught not to open dodgy looking messages or click on links and so may not know if this is legit or what they should do. Hopefully they also have a landline to contact someone!

There may also be scams running on the same day like they did with covid and energy payments. How are vulnerable people going to know which one is real when the information about these alerts is saying the phone 'may make a loud noise', 'may vibrate', 'may read a message'. Which is it? It should be clear what will happen and how you can tell it is the government and not a scam.

This official YouTube video plays the sound that your phone will emit.

What on earth is that! Why do they need to test it on everyone!

I tried to turn it off for my grandmother at her request but couldn't find the option. Her phone is an android as mine is and the option is available on mine. Took it out of 'easy mode' to normal mode and still no sign of it. She doesn't have automatic updates, so maybe this is why? Will the alarm still sound if the phone is not updated?

SilentHedges · 13/04/2023 22:49

I've got through 53 years without needing a government alert and I don't need it now. Thankfully I'm not a DV victim, I have no other phone to hide, but there "may" be a time in my life where having my phone go off unexpectedly could put me in danger or jeopardy. I've disabled it.

It didn't show up for me, but I did find it eventually. If the settings app has a search function, use that as that's how I found mine.
Otherwise, the route for mine is Settings>sound and vibration>more settings>cell broadcasts then it shows a list of emergency alert options.

I believe that my elderly aunt, with dementia, has her late DH's phone somewhere in the house. It won't have any charge in it though. Can I reasonably assume that a phone that is switched off and out of charge won't be affected by this?

It would definitely upset her if it went off, but I doubt she'd even know where it is and she certainly wouldn't manage to change the settings by herself. Presumably, if the phone is dead, it's dead?

I'll have to look again if I can get to her before the trial. Thing is, when I got my phone three years ago I'm sure it wasn't on there and now it is, so it must have been added in an update.
