Where do you do (most of) your food shopping?

I currently get a delivery from Tesco every week, but with the minimum online spend increasing to £50 from £40, and the value of Clubcard rewards decreasing, I may reconsider.

I live near Lidl and get the odd bits, but find the fresh produce poor and not a lot of choice for vegetarians.

Just me and Dd, don't really stick to one shop.

Aldi, M and S, sometimes waitrose or Sainsburys. I don't really do one big shop though, I tend to do two small a week.

StarDolphins · 31/03/2023 11:18

I got so fed up of Aldi, rotten chicken, fruit & veg so now I eat less but shop at Waitrose. Bag of rotten salad that gets chucked at Aldi = £79 v bag of Waitrose £1.20 & every bit gets eaten. Sometimes I get stuff from Morrisons/Tesco.

Xanadu58 · 31/03/2023 11:20

Main shop from Asda , a small shop from Sainsbury's once a week and odd bits and pieces from Aldi .

Surprised to read that, we find Aldi very good. Lidl fruit and veg isn’t great.

Motnight · 31/03/2023 11:24

Ocado, Waitrose, M and S.

Zipps · 31/03/2023 11:25

Mostly M&S, occasionally Sainsburys/Co-op. We get all meat from the butcher, most veg and fruit from the greengrocer and bread, cakes, quiche and pies etc from the local bakery.

Zwicky · 31/03/2023 11:27

Almost always Aldi. We are absolutely skint atm and it definitely works out cheaper generally for me. The reason it’s cheap is the lack of choice but I am too skint to be choosing so even in Waitrose it would be apples and bananas, mince, own brand hobnobs (not together) etc. It’s not as cheap as it was but nowhere is. For stuff I can’t get I usually end up at Tesco for geographical convenience. I go roughly once a month for dried herbs/spices etc.
I find the fresh stuff at Aldi pretty good but it’s hugely popular here and busy so maybe they get a lot of deliveries. By contrast, Tesco which is its nearest rival by many miles is desolate. It’s an enormous shop with hardly anyone in it and short dates on lots of fresh food.
I used to get an Ocado delivery but flounced after the posie “adult human female” billboard saga. I went to Waitrose for a bit and they were ok. I quite like sainsburys but I’ve never had any luck with deliveries - loads of subs - but it’s been a while.

emmathedilemma · 31/03/2023 11:31

I use Aldi when I can (the closest is a few miles away so I only go there if i'm passing anyway but tend to stock up on non-perishables when I do), then Sainsburys or Morrisons for anything else. I'm increasingly using the Morrisons as it's a smaller store and quieter, our Sainsburys is huge and I spend half the time looking for stuff they've moved since I was there! I have a Waitrose nearby but only use that for odd bits if i'm walking past. Our Lidl isn't great for fresh fruit and veg.

hoochycrone · 31/03/2023 11:32

Have done Ocado and Waitrose but now do Morrisons online. Low shopping limit, £25? And £5 midweek pass.
Bread etc from village bakery, top ups from coop.

Cinnamon23 · 31/03/2023 11:33

Lidl and Aldi, with the occasional Iceland freezer stock up.

SeeWhatYouGetWhenYouAskAStupidQuestion · 31/03/2023 11:35

I do the bulk of the shopping at Asda, then get the odd loaf or some milk from the corner shop

WaggyTailsWetNoses · 31/03/2023 11:37

Waitrose home delivery. It costs a fortune but we both work hard and I can’t be doing with trailing around four different shops to save 1.30 on hummus ( thanks to
my retired mum for that helpful tip). We buy our weekend meat and eggs from the local farm shop, and top up there for lovely local treats too.

Orcubed · 31/03/2023 11:37

Tesco mostly with some Aldi. I no longer find Aldi cheaper than Tesco on basic groceries but it is cheaper on some snacks, drinks, yoghurts etc. Used to love Lidl but shelves are bare now and the price has gone up a lot so it’s more expensive than Tesco now for most stuff we buy

MegaClutterSlut · 31/03/2023 11:41

Main shop Asda. Once a month I go to iceland and poundland for bits

QQQQQQQQ123 · 31/03/2023 11:45

Co op in person. I actually enjoy shopping.

Got fed up with the poor choice of 'fresh' veg at Tesco. I still top up at Tesco or M&S if I'm passing the shop.

areyousittingontheremote · 31/03/2023 11:49

I have Aldi and do small shops on the way home from the school run.
I get bulk items in a big shop for which I use a cab of about £4. So a delivery fee basically.

I also use farmfoods as it's nearby and they often have really good deals, expensive stuff for cheap so I pick stuff like that up from there.

We were vegan for 6 years and found Aldi brilliant but Lidl not so much, but I'm limited to what I live by as I don't drive. ASDA are good too, their yellow stuff is very cheap but it's a 30 min walk and I CBA most of the time when Aldi is a 20 min walk.

Slimjimtobe · 31/03/2023 11:52

Probably Lidl mainly and local butcher (buy the offers)

I do like Aldi and pop in during the week - it’s deffo the most popular where we will

I love m&s but it’s too far and expensive

Sulusu · 31/03/2023 11:52

Big shop at Asda, once every 2 or 2 weeks. I do this online as I'm not a fan of the shop itself as they keep rejigging the layout and there is hardly any manned tills anymore. I'm disabled and really struggle with scanning my own shopping etc.

Everything else is done at my local Tesco. It has nice wide aisles, staff are always helpful and they still have a good number of manned tills. I also know when to go when it's nice and quiet and I can always get a good parking spot. I would shop there all the time but with prices of everything going up, Asda is just cheapr for big shops.

Deathraystare · 31/03/2023 12:55

Mostly the small Sainsburys near me. This is because I am extremely lazy and normally cannot be bothered to go to a big shop. But then I shop for myself, no one else. No partner, kids, cats, dogs etc. There is also a small Tesco and Waitrose near me.

However on the rare occasion I go to the Big Sainsburys which is only down the road by bus (did I say I was lazy??!) I suddenly remember how much more vegetarian stuff there is in their freezers. I got some Richmond Veggie bacon there and liked it.

Yes I know non veggies laugh at that but to be honest I have been veggie for decades and do not like meat anyway. If I had the real thing now it would make me sick. But the fake stuff is not greasy and adds just the right salty/smokiness to some dishes.

I should also go to the market more for my fruit and veg although there is a rathe good greengrocers near me as well.

Kind of spoilt for choice in my little corner of West London!

Deathraystare · 31/03/2023 12:58

I also use a 24hr shop where I change buses. One of those that carries Co-op stuff. I also use another 24hr shop when I do early shifts if I need crisps and drinks (ok I really don't NEED crisps!)

ifonly4 · 31/03/2023 13:05

Approx 70% Tescos and 30% Lidl weekly, and a freezer shop with Iceland approx three times a year. Only two of us so I do all shopping on foot to save petrol and both are within walking distance - other than a Co-op, all it'd take approx 20mins to drive to another supermarket, so not worth time or petrol.

There are some products we prefer in Lidl and some cheaper, look out for best fruit/veg offers each week and also know best time to get stuff on clearance in Lidl.

nahnahnahnahnahnah · 31/03/2023 13:08

Aldi.

Dh does all the food shopping as he does the vast majority the cooking.

Sometimes I don’t know why he bothers with Aldi. It’s to save money but we’ve had so much meat like mince that has gone green way before use by date, same with chicken, potatoes that are black inside.

debbiesdrama · 31/03/2023 13:13

I personally don't go shopping, I find it much easier just no to eat and it saves me loads of money

gettingoldisshit · 31/03/2023 14:25

Asda delivery. Asda are not the cheapest but I very rarely have stuff out of stock or random stupid substitutes. Also i only order what i need whereas if i go into the shop i have zero self control and buy offers etc.

ISpyCobraKai · 31/03/2023 14:45

I find Asda the cheapest for delivery.
As much as Lidl/Akdi are cheaper all round, going there is a pain, as is loading/unloading shopping when I live on a main road and can't always park outside my house.
