Anyone else really loving M&S recently?

tiredpuppymum · 30/03/2023 11:38

Im 27, so not sure if it's just the fact I'm older now... or if M&S has become newly amazing in the last year or so.

I first went because I'd seen a thread on here about all the nice food, I'm very easily swayed by a MN rec it seems. Then wandered into the clothing and home sections and I just bloody love it! Even the clothes! I always find really lovely things in there and it really isn't as expensive as I thought it was.

I've just bought a load of bedding from there that's spurred me on to redecorate my entire bedroom. I feel like I've joined a cult! I can't get enough!

Is this a new thing or has it always been great? I feel like more people need to know! Please let me know any recommendations of things to try. I'll tell you some of mine to start.

Layered Mexican dip
Thermals (leggings and long sleeved tops & socks)
The candles! At Xmas I had a frankincense and myrrh one which was gorgeous.
The ivy jeans, the black ones don't fade.

Things that I've ordered that I'm waiting to arrive are:

'Just like down' pillows and duvet
Washed cotton bedding set in 'storm'
Period knicks

I'll report back! I have high hopes!

Our nearest store closed down a few years ago so it’s ages since I’ve been to one.
Once Ocado started selling their food, I do an order every couple of months.

I’ve recently had some decent clothes, two pairs of jeans, cardigan, cotton vest top and tee shirts, four bras, six pairs of knickers and I’ve just ordered a cotton girlfriend shirt and a leather belt. Price and quality have been good.

I definitely do NOT work for M&S and have posted previously about their poor offerings, so happy to report positively and maybe some hope for the high street after all. Whatever they are doing regarding clothing seems to be working and I have, since January, bought a cotton / linen blue suit with oversized jacket and flair trousers (like a denim but not), a khaki 3/4 mac, a b&w jacket in a tweed fabric, 4 cotton jumpers in their sale (all b&w with various stripes) and some trousers navy and black and am so impressed with it all and that's not been the case for a very long time. No problem with on line either and very prompt delivery, again an improvement from previously. The items are all a good mix of fabrics, with good detailing on the clothing, which is a change from many more upmarket (supposedly) brands given the prices they want for their wares. They carry a range of body butters and scrubs, made in England and these have impressed too. Slightly different note, but I do use their food stores (use all except Tescos and Asdas to be honest) and they are competitive with some items, not just on price but taste too. Their tomato soup is a real winner at only .65p and better than the Heinz gloup! Long may this improvement continue.

I found 4 pairs of long length trousers, which is something of a miracle

I think since our local m and s started stocking other brands the attractiveness of their own ranges has improved loads, after all if you are competing with jaeger and sea salt and the rest you need your wits about you.

leggingsandasweatshirt · 30/03/2023 17:18

Yes absolutely agree! I take my grandma and in the last year have ended up with more clothes for me than her 😂

massivenamechnage · 30/03/2023 17:19

No. I ordered 2 pairs of trousers based on recommendations on here- people said they would do for work. Only if you work in a refuse site which is where they both ended up within weeks as such poor quality.

LarkDescending · 30/03/2023 17:59

Yes! Loving Sienna jeans, leather trainers, smart khaki mac. Plus great 3 for 2 tops and trousers for a fast-growing tween boy. Comfortable and decent-looking shoes for my elderly diabetic Dad. And last but not least: Smoky Tomato & Aubergine Zaalouk Dip, which is completely delicious and only sporadically available.

begoneday · 30/03/2023 18:06

It’s all polyester though. I do like their food but have probably bought about 5 items of clothing from there in a couple decades. It’s cheap and poorly made.

begoneday · 30/03/2023 18:07

Their sushi bar is really good , and we like their aged steaks.

Zipps · 30/03/2023 18:14

Love the food and do 80% of our food shopping in M&S.
I don't buy many of their clothes but when I do find something I like I wear it to death. I like their faux leather jeggings, also have a jacket that I love but their underwear has been shit for years. I used to always buy M&S knickers but they went massively down hill so I only buy CK now as they are excellent quality.

hexsnidgett · 30/03/2023 18:22

Just ordered x4 cotton blouses/tops for spring. There still is cotton, but no doubt not the quality we used to get 30 years ago. I cannot believe the thickness of some of the band t shirts I bought for a fiver!

Spiderysenses · 30/03/2023 18:26

I've always liked them. But at the moment they are the only place where I live that has really decent, fresh fruit and veg.

OldTinHat · 30/03/2023 19:19

This post has just made dash out before they close to buy jelly babies and an apple turnover! 😆

Purplepepsi · 30/03/2023 19:26

I'm a fan! Trousers and jeans I don't even look any where else. I have some lovely basic sweatshirts too.

Their bamboo bedding is sooooo lovely, I will replace all of mine with it eventually!

EwwSprouts · 30/03/2023 19:34

Happened to be near a large M&S last week. Bought a striped long sleeve cotton tshirt in the sale for £4.99! Also a pair of trousers that are 50% linen with £5 off with Sparks offer. I was very happy.

BashfulClam · 30/03/2023 19:39

Food wise I like them but the tops are just too bloody short. They tend to hit me at the bottom of my ribs and I’m 5’9” so not super tall.

pumpkinspicedcaffeine · 30/03/2023 19:44

Yes!
there is an M&S outlet near me, and god I love their jeans. Only gripe is their ‘short’ isn’t short enough some of the time, I like an ankle grazer and I wasn’t blessed with a long leg but, they look nice, good quality and are comfortable. That and nursing bras. Love them.

RogerTheTodger · 30/03/2023 19:51

I buy a lot of food at M&S.
Agree with @TollgateDebs about their 65p tomato soup. It is excellent.
Their cheese tasters are better (cheesier) than Wotsits.

Also bought a cotton maxi dress for £45 the other day - the kind of thing that Boden used to do, and now only make in recycled polyester <<boak>> and charge twice that.

Also bought some baking trays recently, made in the UK, and made a huge purchase of goose-down bedding which I would have bought in John Lewis, only they closed my branch down. Up yours, JL (and JL equivalent is now made in China, so double up yours, JL).

familyissues12345 · 30/03/2023 20:00

I love the Ivy jeans, great value, keep their shape and colour and wash well. I keep meaning to go and get another pair!

Also like their blouses, PJs and bras

DaisyDando · 30/03/2023 20:03

I like M&S, especially Autograph but I really hate that our one is almost all self service for clothes. I don’t want to fold my own clothes and de-hanger them and also ask for security tags to be removed and then put everything in bag, thanks very much.

XanaduKira · 30/03/2023 20:12

Ive bought quite a few clothes in M&S recently too - really lovely dresses and reasonably priced also. Used to buy my work dresses from Phase 8 & Coast and now get them all in M&S.

IconicKitty · 30/03/2023 20:19

I love M&S and you can't beat it for basics. I think I fell in love when I hit my mid 20s.

I won't go anywhere else for knickers, thermals (the heat gen plus range is divine), t shirts and PJs.

Calminacrisis · 30/03/2023 20:21

I’ve never realised before how much I rely on M&S - since November I have bought 2 excellent coats for DC, work shoes, lovely underwear, some fitness clothes, hand towels, bedding sets, school uniform and a few other bits and pieces. The only purchase I want impressed with was an acrylic mix jumper that died after one wash but everything else has been brilliant.

Some of their clothes are gorgeous. Another good buy - their leather handbags are usually a good price and excellent quality.

HoneyPotBee · 30/03/2023 20:26

I hope you got a good recommendation for something to go with your steak.

bluebottle23 · 30/03/2023 20:38

Love M&S! Their clothes and shoes are great if you don't have a huge budget! Their make up and beauty ranges are great... the cafe is lovely in the one in Stevenage plus they have children's trolleys for the little ones too, which they love and saves paying to go to soft play haha. Don't even get me started about their food... my favourite is the slow cooked roast pork paired with the bao buns. TDF xxx
