Yes, those who've been blinkered to it can probably make a lot of changes. But lots of people have been aware of waste, pollution, environmental protection, etc., for decades and have been doing "their bit" for decades.
Recycling is nothing new - if you already recycle as much as you can, then you're doing your bit. The problem are those who can't be bothered, even when it costs councils a fortune to provide bins/boxes, collections, etc. You can lead a horse to water......
Same with car usage. Lots of people have already massively curtailed their car use. I gave up a good job with a long commute around 25 years ago to get a lower paid job more locally. Then about 15 years ago, I set up my own business and deliberately rented an office close enough to home so that I could walk/cycle instead of driving. My car does less than 3,000 miles per year. Meanwhile a neighbour (who is perfectly physically fit), drives down to the garage about a quarter of a mile away (so close we can see it from our house), daily to buy things she's forgotten like a loaf of bread or pint of milk!
As for waste/recycling, we'd rather not buy in the first place, and make things last, re-use, re-purpose, etc., than buy stuff and feel "worthy" that we recycle. Simply not buying in the first place is a hell of a lot better than virtue signalling recycling due to the pollution/energy used in recycling.
Lots of us already do what we can and have been doing it for decades. That's why I don't lose sleep over the environment etc., because there's nothing more we can do! We've done all we reasonably can, so worrying about it won't help anyone or anything.
