This is what people should really be worrying about ...

Even if you haven't been worried (yet) by current increases in extreme weather events, this should ring alarm bells. These currents are what keep the UK and other northern European countries relatively warm compared to Greenland. : BBC News - Antarctic ocean currents heading for collapse- report

We need to be more prepared for climate refugees. Nationally and internationally.

The Thames basin is heavily populated...

I am worried, but there is very little I can do beyond reduce my own consumption and vote for people who actually give a shit (i.e. not the Tories).

It feels completely hopeless tbh.

oh my love, things are absolutely not hopeless. Some people are working really hard trying to shift attitudes (of children in schools mostly) people are putting in loads of money and time (I'm not talking millionaires I'm talking Bob down the road donating £50 out if his £300 weekly salary) and planting trees, flowers, shrubs and native plants. There are teenagers on Instagram saying 'fuck you invasive species' and ripping them out and planting native plants in their place.
Bug and hedgehog hotels are really popular which shows people care and want change. i agree buying them mass produced from shops isn't great but change will be slower.
We are getting there but it's slow. there are hundreds of grassroots organisations and charities and groups. I follow loads on social media (can't join in with all) just so I can feel like I know what my local (and not so local) communities are getting up to to help the problem.

WandaWonder · 30/03/2023 10:47

OK people worry

And?

JamSandle · 30/03/2023 10:49

I find it so sad that the younger generations have this on their shoulders. Along with cost of living and threat of war. They deserve so much better than what they've been left with.

highintheskypurple · 30/03/2023 10:49

I don't know why people are so opposed to caring or worrying about this topic.
If you found out you had cancer would wouldn't say 'oh it's cancer I might as well smoke and drink and have fun before I die', you have chemotherapy and radiotherapy and whatever else is needed even if it feels fruitless.

But the planet we live on, the weather patterns we rely on, is a lost cause? Because we can't do anything? We fucking can and people are doing stuff!

Exactly! It's only our home. The attitude of why should we care is so strange to me.

highintheskypurple · 30/03/2023 10:55

I felt it was really urgent when I had my first baby. it is exciting though to see young adults fresh out of school/ uni getting really into it.

happysingleversary · 30/03/2023 11:04

GlacindaTheTroll · 30/03/2023 10:42

If you mean fretting, not much.

If you mean caring enough to turn those concerns into action, a considerable amount.

My environmental impact is relatively low so I'll carry on as I am.

Kazzyhoward · 30/03/2023 11:11

Yes, those who've been blinkered to it can probably make a lot of changes. But lots of people have been aware of waste, pollution, environmental protection, etc., for decades and have been doing "their bit" for decades.

Recycling is nothing new - if you already recycle as much as you can, then you're doing your bit. The problem are those who can't be bothered, even when it costs councils a fortune to provide bins/boxes, collections, etc. You can lead a horse to water......

Same with car usage. Lots of people have already massively curtailed their car use. I gave up a good job with a long commute around 25 years ago to get a lower paid job more locally. Then about 15 years ago, I set up my own business and deliberately rented an office close enough to home so that I could walk/cycle instead of driving. My car does less than 3,000 miles per year. Meanwhile a neighbour (who is perfectly physically fit), drives down to the garage about a quarter of a mile away (so close we can see it from our house), daily to buy things she's forgotten like a loaf of bread or pint of milk!

As for waste/recycling, we'd rather not buy in the first place, and make things last, re-use, re-purpose, etc., than buy stuff and feel "worthy" that we recycle. Simply not buying in the first place is a hell of a lot better than virtue signalling recycling due to the pollution/energy used in recycling.

Lots of us already do what we can and have been doing it for decades. That's why I don't lose sleep over the environment etc., because there's nothing more we can do! We've done all we reasonably can, so worrying about it won't help anyone or anything.

TheOrigRights · 30/03/2023 11:11

I do care and I do worry.
What do you suggest we do about it?

BooseysMom · 30/03/2023 11:12

If you listen to Neil Oliver, it's all bollocks apparently! Along with the pandemic. All made up to control the masses and make money 🤔

mollyoppy · 30/03/2023 11:14

From a 2004 Observer article: 'Now the Pentagon tells Bush: climate change will destroy us'

"Climate change over the next 20 years could result in a global catastrophe costing millions of lives in wars and natural disasters..

"A secret report, suppressed by US defence chiefs and obtained by The Observer, warns that major European cities will be sunk beneath rising seas as Britain is plunged into a ‘Siberian’ climate by 2020."

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2004/feb/22/usnews.theobserver

Go back over the last 40 years and you'll find countless reports, all warning of imminent climate apocalypse. Don't make yourself ill with worry.

Do your best to live well, and remember that billionaires preach of climate disaster, yet continue to fly private jets and buy waterfront mansions.

Somebodiesmother · 30/03/2023 11:14

There's fuck all I can do about it so no point in worrying.

Yeah I know! There's loads of his stuff out there on Twitter, YouTube, etc. It's really quite scary

In the near on five decades I've been on this planet it's been one apolcalyse prediction after another...and guess what, we're still here! Bit bored with them to be honest.

Why do you think that is?

Were the scientists wrong, or were reasonable predictions weaponised and embellished for financial or political gain?

I know, people have been banging on about the end times for all of human history.
Going to grab a sign, scribble out rapture and write climate change 😂

leafygarden · 30/03/2023 11:56

RudsyFarmer · 30/03/2023 09:08

I honestly can’t worry about anything else. I’m already breaking my teeth each night by gnashing my jaw wildly. I’m going to have to take my chances and accept my fate along with most other plebs alive today.

😂😂

I know what you mean @RudsyFarmer

WalkAwaySugarbear · 30/03/2023 12:01

It's a worry, sure. However it's low on a long list of concerns that I have as a full time working mother of 2. I have too much on my plate as it is.
As a family we we are fairly low waste, run 1 car, use it 1/2 a week max, upgraded to efficient boiler, use leftovers, not been abroad in over 3yrs. DH works in plastics manufacturing so is is not environmentally friendly. There are countries polluting the planet beyond me switching to LED bulbs.

BloodyHellKen · 30/03/2023 12:17

MermaidEyes · 30/03/2023 09:23

We have the same latitude as Canada, meaning one day possibly in the nearer future than we think we could have the long cold snowy winters they experience there.

@MermaidEyes that is not how climate works.

Canada is a huge land mass with a western ridge of high terrain (The Rockies). Both those factors will have an influence on climate hand in hand with latitude for reasons that are far to complex to go into here. But if anyone is interested please look up climatology/physical geography text books.

In comparison the UK is a tiny island (i.e. surrounded by sea which also has in important influence on climate) with nothing like the high terrain of the Rockies.

Notparticularlyslappable · 30/03/2023 12:22

I'm looking forward to skiing holidays without getting on a plane!

I've lived in much colder countries than the UK and the standard of living and work life balance has always been better.

I'm not saying climate change isn't an important thing to worry about, but when I was a member of the younger generation we'd had the threat of nuclear war for years, interest rates at 15% etc etc so it very much seems same old to me.

If only there was a credible political party that promoted green issues above all else 😏🙄

Maybe someone should start one and not let it get derailed this time.
