DH and I are going there for a few days' break in early July. We'd love some suggestions of places, museums & shops to visit, and we are staying at a B&B so would also like recommendations of good restaurants/pubs in the evenings. Happy to do plenty of walks too. Can you really find pieces of jet on the beach?

We stayed in the summer and loved just pottering around all the little streets and shops.
Go up the steps to the Abbey - the views are great. We also did a ghost tour which was quite fun.
Lemon tops are very popular ice creams!
There are some great fish and chip shops - lots to choose from.
We didn’t find jet on the beach unfortunately.
Sweet place to visit.

GuyFawkesDay · 29/03/2023 21:45

Magpie fish n chips
Arnold Palmer crazy golf!

PoorlyDS · 29/03/2023 21:46

Robin hoods bay is very close and just stunning
Whitby bee enjoyed just mooching tbh. And chips. All the chips

Carsarelife · 29/03/2023 21:47

When I went I bought myself a lovely Whitby jet necklace as a souvenir. If you like jewellery there's so many pretty jewellery shops. I loved it. Whitby exceeded my expectations. It's up there with one of my fave ever UK breaks. I went in 2021. There are ghost walks you can go on, Whitby museum, pirate boat trip which is quite funny, 199 steps up the abbey is fab and the beach is so beautiful too.

Gin?! Crazy golf?! Fish and chips?!

Yay!! My kind of holiday 😃😂

Lucky duck shop 😍

ArnoldBee · 29/03/2023 21:49

The brewery tap just outside the Abbey. The beer is gorgeous.

Boat trip. Open top bus. Loved whitby!!!!!

BarbaraofSeville · 29/03/2023 21:54

We went for a day trip last week.

Lots of great fish and chip shops, not just the Magpie. I just think they have better PR.

If you want a longish walk (maybe around 7 miles round trip) you can walk north along the coastal path to Sandsend, where there's a pub and a fish and chip shop. Maybe get an OS map of the local area and work out some routes? Also have a drive up onto the moors, maybe visit Goathland, Grosmont, Hole of Horcum or go on the steam train to Pickering and back?

MaryDerry · 29/03/2023 21:56

Time the tides right and walk along the beach to Sandsend. There's a lovely cafe there above the beach.

Whitby is busy. Abbey is worth a visit up all.the steps.
Steam train is expensive but a lovely way to see the scenery.

MaryDerry · 29/03/2023 21:57

Google best fish'n'chip shops - Magpie is over-rated, they are fine but not the best!

WhitbyNative · 29/03/2023 21:57

Had to name change for this as I doubt there are that many of us on here and everyone knows each other.

So as the name suggests Whitby born & bred here 👋🏻

Quite rare that you will find jet on the beach, you should be able to find an abundance of seaglass though.

Museums we have Whitby Museum and also the Captain Cook Museum which is worth a visit.

Restaurants everyone will tell you to go to The Magpie which although lovely serves the same fish as every other fish restaurant in town so save yourself the time queuing (it will be long in July).

Pubs The Resolution do lovely food as does The Granby, pub for just drinks The Little Angel and The Pier Inn are welcoming. The Brewery do lovely craft beers and pizzas.

Do try a ghost walk & also a boat trip for the experience although if you suffer from seasickness I'd give the latter a miss, they're surprisingly rough.

pippabg · 29/03/2023 22:00

Love Whitby! Definitely do the Abbey and look at the local jet shops. Day trip to Robin Hoods Bay also worth it! In the good weather, we'd go rowing on the river in nearby Russop (you can rent a boat), but I was kid so maybe might not be as fun as adults! Lots of good memories though.

twolilacs · 29/03/2023 22:02

Thank you so much everyone! I can't wait to go now, and it looks like we will need to take much money...

Stayed there last weekend in our Campervan (folly gardens site) for the first time. We went to watch our football team play a league game against Whitby Town but crammed in what we could.

View the Abbey for free from the perimeter then have a pint in the brewery behind the abbey. Trenchers or Magpie for fish and chips. Green dragon and waiting room for good beer. We do prioritise food and drink 😊

So much we didn’t see so we’ll be back.

Kevenstinger · 29/03/2023 22:10

Also, had some really meaningful chats with both locals and fellow visitors. It’s that kind of place. Full of soul

Britinme · 29/03/2023 22:11

A friend of mine runs a cafe/second hand book shop on Skinner Street, called Beckett's. She does fantastic cakes and paninis and soups. Highly recommended.

Kevenstinger · 29/03/2023 22:12

We also ate in the four seasons, my lamb skewer was beautifully rare

motherofawhirlwind · 29/03/2023 22:13

Up the steps, round the church and Abbey and into the YHA tea room.

Definitely go to Sandsend - the Sandsend Cafe is lovely, but also there's a wee one at the far end by the car park and loos. The one on the river is fine but not as nice, imo.

Steam train to Goathland, a fab circular walk down the cinder track, across the fields and past the church. Cuppa in Goathland Tea Rooms. Then train back or walk to Grosmont via the pub in Beck Hole and get the train back from there.

If you've got the car, Staithes is lovely, Pickering (can do that by steam train too) Castle, Scarborough Castle or Helmsley Castle if you like castles.

Fish and Chips - Trenchers is the best but Royal Fisheries is owned by the same people and quieter.

Bothams for cakes and lemon buns.

I have family just outside so we've visited lots. Never get tired of it but prefer out of season or heading inland sometimes as it can get mad in the summer.

frustratednomad · 29/03/2023 22:17

We went last year for a long weekend in the middle of the heatwave. The regatta was on so it was absolutely rammed, despite the heat there was a sea mist all weekend so no point doing the bus tour, boat trip, tried the steam train but it wasn't running, it was just a normal train. Went to Sandsend but nowhere to park so had a ride round the moor, altogether a disappointing weekend but the fish and chips were lovely!

Somanycats · 29/03/2023 22:18

I didn't really like it. Given we were there on a summer weekend, but it was full of really aggressive drunken stag parties, together with brawls vomiting and lying in the street unconscious.
I could see it was a lovely place to look at, but the atmosphere was really hostile.

motherofawhirlwind · 29/03/2023 22:21

Oh! Sherlocks in Whitby. Very cool cafe and dog friendly.

onionringcheeseypuff · 29/03/2023 22:33

Me and my son go once or twice a year and go out on the boat trips in summer..we've seen dolphins frolicking several times. It's amazing!
