URGENT - Newborn throwing up blood??

Spencer2 · 28/03/2023 20:44

Hi all, I am going to attempt to attach a pic as 3 week old spat up on a muslin cloth just now and it is brown/pink in colour? My first thought was are my nipples bleeding but there’s no cracks or bleeding on the outside, nor any blood when I hand express some milk out?

Just called maternity triage and they said to keep an eye on him over night. I am very worried and not sure whether to go to a&e?

Be reassured by the fact that the maternity unit don't seem too concerned but I'd also go straight to A&E

Newmumtobetwentytwentytwo · 28/03/2023 21:58

I had this when my baby was 5 days old. I rang the midwife who said go to an and e but didn’t sound too concerned. I did go and they said it was blood from the birth which I later heard was quite common -very scary though.

Moltenpink · 28/03/2023 22:09

Have you tried self expressing a little bit with your fingers, to see if it comes out pink?

I had this when my daughter was a few days old. Went to A&E in the middle of the night. It was coming from me……baby was actually fine. I didn’t believe them at first! Hope your little one is OK.

strugglingstmw · 28/03/2023 22:28

Is it breast fed? Are your nipples bleeding?

Jellyphants · 28/03/2023 22:48

I had this when my DS was 2 days old. He threw up some blood which contained clots too. I contacted 111, but the Dr didn’t sound overly concerned and said just to keep an eye on it. Turns out it was DS expelling blood/clots/gunk he’d inhaled during birth. It only happened that once.

But trust your gut, if you feel more comfortable having your baby checked over then do it.

alyceflowers · 28/03/2023 22:56

For all those asking about breastfeeding the OP literally says in her second line "My first thought was are my nipples bleeding but there’s no cracks or bleeding on the outside, nor any blood when I hand express some milk out?"

Mumma · 28/03/2023 22:57

This is a sign of reflux but i would go to a and e

OneFrenchEgg · 28/03/2023 22:58

I had this after grandad fed the new baby chocolate drops and swore my. nieces to secrecy. Almost lost my mind with worry until he cracked.
I don't think I would go though if the maternity unit are ok - they must have seen this before?

Mummapenguin20 · 28/03/2023 23:00

Go to a&e

NashvilleQueen · 28/03/2023 23:05

Happened to me when breast feeding as others have said.

NashvilleQueen · 28/03/2023 23:06

Sorry I missed the bit in the OP.

bellsbuss · 28/03/2023 23:07

I would go to your nearest children's hospital instead of A and E

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 28/03/2023 23:10

It's probably nothing but you don't take that risk with a newborn, I'd definitely go to A&E.

MumOf2workOptions · 28/03/2023 23:10

@Spencer2
I'm so sorry to read this please go straight to A&E now and take the cloth to show them -
I hope you and your baby are ok 👌

Ratatouille1 · 28/03/2023 23:15

If your baby is well, I would follow the advice given by the maternity triage, Obviously if anything changes call again or go to A and E. I'm not sure why the rush to A and E and an uncomfortable wait if advice has already been given.

Iam4eels · 29/03/2023 08:33

Because newborns should be assessed face to face rather than over the phone and some issues, such as a newborn possibly vomiting blood, are red flag issues that should always be assessed face to face. Telephone triage don't always get it right either, maternity triage told me over the phone that my sepsis was food poisoning.

Fluffodils · 29/03/2023 08:36

Hope it's going OK OP

ToBeOrNotToBee · 28/03/2023 20:55

Express some milk. You may have blood in your milk which is what hes thrown up.

If all clear, go to A&E

OP literally said in her post that she has done this...

Sugargliderwombat · 29/03/2023 09:30

I had this when my baby was a few days old. Called 111 and they said He had swallowed some gunky bloody stuff on his way out or from breastmilk (I think the blood can be in the milk itself rather than coming from cracked nipples.). If you are still worried go to a&e.

pontipinemum · 29/03/2023 10:00

How scary! Hope it all went ok last night

itwasntmetho · 29/03/2023 10:08

My Son did this, it was from my breast, nipples weren't bloody either so I was quite shocked.

There can be blood in one feed and not another, things heal and she wouldn't know which breast it came from.

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/03/2023 10:12

A&E. hope all is well.

EarlGreywithLemon · 29/03/2023 10:22

Definitely go. Hopefully all well, but not worth taking the risk. You’ll hopefully be seen quickly with a newborn, they do prioritise them.
