URGENT - Newborn throwing up blood??

Spencer2 · 28/03/2023 20:44

Hi all, I am going to attempt to attach a pic as 3 week old spat up on a muslin cloth just now and it is brown/pink in colour? My first thought was are my nipples bleeding but there’s no cracks or bleeding on the outside, nor any blood when I hand express some milk out?

Just called maternity triage and they said to keep an eye on him over night. I am very worried and not sure whether to go to a&e?

Go to A&E. You have a newborn, you have reason to be worried, they'd rather see you and have it be nothing than not.

ilkleymoorbartat · 28/03/2023 20:47

I would go to a&e because I don't think it's worth risking anything with a newborn.

mrsfennel · 28/03/2023 20:48

I dont have kids, but if I was babysitting my nephew I would go to A&E.

You're worried and you have a newborn baby - definitely go to hospital.

TeaAndCrumpets7 · 28/03/2023 20:48

Yep, A&E, just in case.

Iam4eels · 28/03/2023 20:48

Take the cloth with you.

Insheerpanic · 28/03/2023 20:49

Go get checked but just to reassure you I had this with my little boy (In large amounts and very red) and it was just from my breast milk and my nipples but always best to be safe! X

whereaw · 28/03/2023 20:49

Yes I would go and take the cloth too. Good luck. Best to be on the safe side.

caramac04 · 28/03/2023 20:50

I would go to A&E. Hopefully baby is ok but babies can get very poorly very quickly.
Please follow your instincts and update us OP.

I'd go to A&E as well, I'm genuinely surprised they said to just keep an eye overnight. As the pp said, take the cloth with you to show them

Fluffodils · 28/03/2023 20:51

Go to A & E. Don't second guess your instinct

LouLou198 · 28/03/2023 20:54

Go to A& E. I had this with dd, she was a few months old. I took the bedsheet with me so do the same with the cloth. They had no idea what caused it but we stayed in hospital for observation for 12 hours and they did blood tests. Never happened again but glad we got her seen.

Meandfour · 28/03/2023 20:55

A&E. I hope he is ok!

ToBeOrNotToBee · 28/03/2023 20:55

Express some milk. You may have blood in your milk which is what hes thrown up.

If all clear, go to A&E

PizzaPizza56 · 28/03/2023 21:22

Definitely go get check out in A&E but be prepared for a long wait.

When my baby threw up blood from my cracked nips it looked more pink, like strawberry milkshake.

When he threw up Omeprazole it looked exactly like this.

mrshenny · 28/03/2023 21:35

My first baby had similar and I went to A&E, she was all okay but 100% get checked out

TolkiensFallow · 28/03/2023 21:42

My baby did this and it was due to acid reflux. She had some gaviscon. However they gave advice about what to look out for etc. do go to a&e and take the cloth

NewNormalLife · 28/03/2023 21:43

I think my son had brown mucus this. i read it was getting rid of mucus in his lungs that was inhaled during birth. it only happened the once so I didn't worry but worth getting checked out if you're worried

Moltenpink · 28/03/2023 21:45

I had this due to rusty pipe syndrome, no cracked nipples or anything. It really freaked me out too, but harmless for the baby. Hope all is ok

BlackeyedSusan · 28/03/2023 21:46

Could see cracks in my nipples either until he fed, then you saw the blood.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 28/03/2023 21:47

My daughter had this. It was from my nipples.

stillherenow · 28/03/2023 21:49

Mine threw up copious amounts of blood as a very early newborn and we went to a&e, they can give something that stops any stomach bleeding. They said it was my nipples but I later discovered it was actually due to a dairy allergy - she’d had some bottle milk in hospital and it had made her stomach lining bleed.

she’s absolutely fine now , so don’t worry too much , but get it checked.

I was just about to say this. It looks purpley like reflux medication, I’ve had it with both my little ones. So if yours is taking omeprazole or lansoprazole it could be that?

FlamingoElephant · 28/03/2023 21:52

Defo a&e, hope baby's ok. Even if it's nothing to worry about at least you've gone to get checked.

mindutopia · 28/03/2023 21:55

Personally, I’d be inclined to stay home, unless you saw any further signs he was in any sort of distress.

I know the gut MN reaction is to go to A &E but having been in A&E with young children, it’s not always the best place. Unless you have other concerns, being at home keeping an eye on him is likely going to be better than sitting in A&E reception for 8 hours overnight with no sleep for anyone. My dd had a very complex fracture last summer (due to a gymnastics injury) and we absolutely needed to be in A&E (surgery within 12 hours of arriving), but otherwise would have wanted to stay home if we could have. There were some families waiting 8+ hours when we arrived.
