Is it now common for teen boys to wear tinted moisturiser?

My 16yo son has been wearing tinted moisturiser for a couple of years. I think he may originally have googled how to hide acne spots and it went from there. I thought it might be a temporary thing, but seems not. He seems to be buying brands aimed at men. Is it a common thing these days?

I don't mind, just curious, though as I don't wear much makeup myself I'm inclined to prefer him to just keep his skin clean and lightly moisturised without overloading it with anything else. (For context, in case anyone was inclined to ask, he is straight, very sporty, and only very marginally interested in fashion).

I was in John Lewis in Oxford Street and the young man (18ish) behind the Bobbi Brown counter had Full Make Up on. No one batted an eyelid. Not sure I would want a teenage boy to offer me makeup and skin advice tho but that's just me

It's becoming more common definitely, a lot of the make up adverts feature men now with full faces of make up.

LookItsMeAgain · 28/03/2023 08:43

Yep, it's a thing. Sometimes it can make a huge difference to their appearance and give them a confidence that they wouldn't have. More power to them!

TottyKnickers · 28/03/2023 08:59

I think the boys think they need to keep up with the girls as the girls expect it more these days. All Instagram ready and the girls expect it. I prefer a more manly man who looks like he can look after me, and you can always see make up when it's on anyway

I was having a medical for a job many moons ago the Dr asked about allergies. I had an awful allergic reaction to stage make up as a child at school so had never worn any sort of make up after that. He said no one should wear make up as so bad for the skin and gave me a mini lecture about it. So I sort of get where you are coming from. I do very occasionally wear Clinique but decades forward due to my allergic skin and only wearing simple brand moisturiser for years my skin is in very good condition for my age.

maddy68 · 28/03/2023 09:27

Yes it is. I'm a teacher many of the boys are clearly wearing foundation /tinted moisturizer. To cover acne

Angelonthewall · 28/03/2023 09:29

Ds used to - when he was emerging from boy to man, felt very insecure about his appearance for a good couple of years and obsessed quite a bit about it. Now 20 years old and feeling better about himself - the cosmetics have disappeared

My husband (50s) wears it as he has very bad rosacea. He has to do public speaking and he feels much more confident with it. You can't tell he's got it on at all whereas I can't find one that looks as good on my skin!
He is embarrassed to admit he wears it but I don't think he should be.

Just wanted to recommend rosalique, it's great for rosacea. It's green in the tube, neutralises the redness.

i’ve seen a male rep on a beauty counter at both my local John Lewis and Boots. There may be more. I know the one in Boots so we’ve had several conversations there. He wears something as a base, I don’t know if it’s tinted moisturiser or foundation, though.

Treeabovethefire · 28/03/2023 09:38

This. I’ve used this and never taken it off at night. What do people think is going to happen? I thought the whole point of tinted moisturiser was to leave it on so it could gradually build up colour.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 28/03/2023 09:43

I don't think it is common in the sense of deliberately going out to buy and wear a tinted moisturiser. But if they go to buy an acne product, it may be labeled as "treating acne and making skin look better", and in effect the camouflage element is a tinted moisturiser disguised as an acne cream.

There was a boy at the last school I worked at in Y11 who used to wear a full face of makeup everyday. I also did a visit to beauty school and there were several boys there wearing obvious make up. The full face thing is fairly uncommon, but tinted moisturiser, eye brow tinting etc is very normal amongst teenage boys these days.

SophiaSW1 · 28/03/2023 09:49

Yes.

crumpet · 28/03/2023 09:50

I’ve not come across this. Remember a number of boys wearing guyliner in my teens, but haven’t heard of this recent trend.

I think that’s fake suntan you have in mind, not tinted moisturiser

CertainUncertain · 28/03/2023 10:21

Yes, I think it's pretty common.

Surely it's just eyeliner? Eyes are eyes and it's not called womanliner when a woman wears it

Bearpawk · 28/03/2023 12:16

I don't know any who do but then again I don't know many teenage boys.
I imagine the rise of social media filters can make boys as well as girls feel very conscious about 'imperfections'

It was a bit of a joke name for men wearing eyeliner back in the 80s. Not intended at the time to be taken seriously.

I get that (around that age myself). It's just that my kids have pointed out to me, and I think they're right, how limiting that kind of naming/thinking is.

crumpet · 28/03/2023 15:22

If it “had” to be called guyliner, then I’d be with you. But sometimes a bit of lightheartedness isn’t a bad thing. Especially when everyone knows that eyeliner is just eyeliner and anyone can wear it.

Tinted moisturiser isn't supposed to be left on, it's moisturiser with foundationy type stuff added. You're talking about moisturiser with fake tan added

farnhamgal · 28/03/2023 15:30

I don't even know why this is a question.

My husband wears tinted moisturiser and I can quite confidently confirm he isn't trans or gay.

Fromwetome · 28/03/2023 15:37

Yeah it's common ever since geordie shore normalised men putting concealer on and doing their eyebrows.

JFDIYOLO · 28/03/2023 15:57

All actors an TV personalities wear makeup.

I remember ...
Glam rockers, punks, new romantics, goths etc covered in it. Bowie, Adam Ant, more recently Johnny Depp as Jack, Tom Ellis as Lucifer ...

And until the Victorian age gentlemen habitually wore thick makeup, wigs, lace, heels, embroidery, perfume ...

It's just fashion. It's fine. Bit of cottonwool and some micellar water will be all he needs to remove it at night.

Fizbosshoes · 28/03/2023 16:13

I'm taking this as a sign of encouragement that my DS will eventually be bothered about hair/skin/hygeine. He's 13 and at the moment he needs reminding to have a shower and hair wash!!Blush Left to his own devices he'd probably do it once a fortnight! 😱
He's not smelly (yet) but I fear it's only a matter of time!

Tinted moisturiser isnt a gradual tan. Is that what you mean?
