Is it now common for teen boys to wear tinted moisturiser?

My 16yo son has been wearing tinted moisturiser for a couple of years. I think he may originally have googled how to hide acne spots and it went from there. I thought it might be a temporary thing, but seems not. He seems to be buying brands aimed at men. Is it a common thing these days?

I don't mind, just curious, though as I don't wear much makeup myself I'm inclined to prefer him to just keep his skin clean and lightly moisturised without overloading it with anything else. (For context, in case anyone was inclined to ask, he is straight, very sporty, and only very marginally interested in fashion).

Yes it is.

coffeemoon · 28/03/2023 07:42

It doesn't seem that unusual that boys would want to cover their acne.

If we say we want a society that is equal for men and women/ boys and girls then we shouldn't raise an eyebrow at this.

Never known a man to wear make up in real life, unless they’re a drag queen

Yes perfectly normal, it's tinted moisturiser not foundation, so unless he doesn't remove it at the end of the day his skin should be fine.

icelollycraving · 28/03/2023 07:46

It’s not really important what you want on his skin tbh.
Men’s grooming is a huge growing market. A lot of tinted moisturiser will also contain sunscreen so that’s a bit of a bonus if he’s sporty. I’ve known men to wear full face through to nothing but I’m in the beauty industry.

icelollycraving · 28/03/2023 07:47

My first comment sounded a bit more spiky than intended!

Clymene · 28/03/2023 07:48

I don't know any who do

You must have led a sheltered life. I have known loads of men who wear make up. Not so much now as I am old, but when I was young, it was nothing unusual at all.

I can't see how a bit of tinted moisturiser will harm his skin, OP. It is hardly panstick level make up.

LaviniasBigBloomers · 28/03/2023 07:49

I wouldn't say it's common, but it's not unusual either, if that makes sense?

I do regret that the beauty industry is now targeting our boys as much as our girls but as long as he's taking it off properly at night, there's no real harm in it.

Tryphenia · 28/03/2023 07:50

I teach undergraduates and it’s pretty usual.

Really? Even back in the 90s, I remember boys using concealer to cover spots.

clarrylove · 28/03/2023 07:52

If it's just moisturiser, why do you need to remove it at night?

icelollycraving · 28/03/2023 07:54

@clarrylove everyone should clean their face. For men, they often prefer to use a face wash.

Because it’s tinted.

I agree with this... I'm all for removing gender stereotypes, but I'd much rather that this one had gone in the opposite direction! More young people feeling insecure about their skin is not a win in my eyes.

But yes, I don't think it's very unusual, OP.

My husband (50s) wears it as he has very bad rosacea. He has to do public speaking and he feels much more confident with it. You can't tell he's got it on at all whereas I can't find one that looks as good on my skin!
He is embarrassed to admit he wears it but I don't think he should be.

What one does he use?

Ownedbyabeagle · 28/03/2023 08:12

It's from beauty pie and has SPF in it too. Sorry I don't know the exact name but can check later.

helpfulperson · 28/03/2023 08:13

The fact that there are male brands of this tells you that loads of men do. It's a growing market along with 'products' for hair. I take groups of teenagers away frequently and it's becoming the boys who take longest to get ready in the morning.

Moisturiser isn’t make up. The fact it’s tinted doesn’t mean much. Normal for males in their 30s so probably even more normal for the younger generation.

Oh brilliant, thanks!!

transformandriseup · 28/03/2023 08:16

Not sure how common it is but I wouldn't class tinted moisturiser as makeup.

You must be very naive if you believe the men you meet in life aren’t wearing makeup. How many drag queens do you know?

TottyKnickers · 28/03/2023 08:21

I was in John Lewis in Oxford Street and the young man (18ish) behind the Bobbi Brown counter had Full Make Up on. No one batted an eyelid. Not sure I would want a teenage boy to offer me makeup and skin advice tho but that's just me
