Up yours, Gillian Keegan - teacher pay offer.

£1000 this year one-off payment (unclear if taxed?)

4.3% pay rise for experienced teachers from September, (well below inflation), 7.1% for newbies, presumably to meet their £30k manifesto promise.

Fuck all on Ofsted
They'll set up a "Workload TaskForce" (so fuck-all on workload).

The £1k will be funded, they reckon schools can afford the 4.3% next year (hah) so will only fund 0.5% of it.

NEU have strongly recommended that members reject.

So recruitment is fucked then.

How HOW are heads supposed to attract staff? The wheels have been coming off for years but this feels like the year things will actually come unstuck.

PaigeMatthews · 27/03/2023 20:11

Scotland is where our pay should be if we had been getting cost of living rises.

MakeMineABourbon · 27/03/2023 20:11

noblegiraffe · 27/03/2023 18:53

Here you go, piggy.

A teacher on top of the pay scale could earn £12k more in Scotland from September. That's fucking ridiculous.

Why do the Tories not value education?

WTF it’s insulting is what it is. A (less than) 1K pay off so that we’ll shut up and f* off. No way am I accepting the paltry and offensive offer which is in no way fair when you compare it to the Scots. I’m livid, and ready for a fight!! Come on NASUWT. Re-ballot!!! What about the long standing teachers, why do we always get offered the least good deal?!!!!! Aaaarrggggghhhh so angry!

I've rejected it.
Wankers.

The Tories, not you lot.

thecatfromjapan · 27/03/2023 20:16

Insulting.

blondieminx · 27/03/2023 20:18

What planet are govt on?

inflation is currently above 10%. Everyone’s bills up.

offering 4-7% ….is a pay cut.

they do realise teachers can do actual maths?

DrMadelineMaxwell · 27/03/2023 20:18

I think the offer for Wales was lower. 1.5% one off and 1.5% additional pay rise backdated to Sept. Which compared to Scotland was a paltry offering. But what swung it was the fact that it was, on the second time of offering, funded.

However, it was also a no-lose offer and if England is offered more, Wales has agreed in advance to match it.

wtfisgoingonhere21 · 27/03/2023 20:26

Not in education at all nor public sector but I have a dc in secondary education that is already struggling like mad 😠

What a terrible offer and a slap in the face for all educational staff working with nothing and yet again going to be shit out.

I hope everyone refuses so they can strike a deal instead of a massive insult.

Ps
And yes my child has had her education online on days the schools have been on strike and they did online education through a portal so if more days off to get the staff the pay and resources they need and rightly deserve then so be it

RosieBdy · 27/03/2023 20:29

rejected already...
Any offer needs to be funded.
We're already losing lots of support staff from September as we couldn't afford the last round of pay increases.
How are schools going to find this 4%?
It's the children who will miss out and our amazing support staff who will have to be let go... makes me SO cross!

noblegiraffe · 27/03/2023 20:30

I think the offer for Wales was lower. 1.5% one off and 1.5% additional pay rise backdated to Sept.

That’s better than the English one? Particularly as 1.5% is a pay rise so you’ll get it in future years too.

It's as if she actually wants us to strike

Boomboom22 · 27/03/2023 20:34

Joker. Not my union but hoping naswut reballot, I'm up for striking now.

Smartiepants79 · 27/03/2023 20:36

It’s the lack of funding for any of it that pisses me off most. My school can’t afford the bloody photocopier or basic stationary. 🤬 my union is against supporting it.

Boomboom22 · 27/03/2023 20:36

Also think they need to stop upping the ect wage. Retention is what you want not people who will leave, long term professionals not teach first rubbish.

noblegiraffe · 27/03/2023 20:37

I think, for me, the biggest insult here is the complete lack of movement on non-pay issues.

We know the Treasury are utter bastards and wouldn't be showering us with cash. But the DfE could easily have made some big concessions on workload or Ofsted to show that they were actually taking teacher concerns seriously.

A fucking taskforce. Fucksake.

I feel sorry for you all, i dont know how teachers do it and this is plainly an insult.

Yes, every time they bump ECT pay and give experienced teachers less, they flatten the pay scale and make staying in teaching less attractive.

Idiots.

I’ve just voted to reject the pay offer-it’s an absolute piss take.

Boomboom22 · 27/03/2023 20:34

Had an email from NASUWT today. They’re advising against it and there is a survey that mentions strike action.

CallmeAngelina · 27/03/2023 20:41

Everyone, EVERYONE, particularly parents with children in schools today, should be worried and angry about this.
It WILL affect your children and have a detrimental impact on their education now and going forward.
This is deliberate policy by the Government. They are INTENDING to down-grade the quality of the schooling your children receive by shafting the teaching staff and reducing the already paltry budgets even further.

donttellmehesalive · 27/03/2023 20:42

A lot of NASUWT who didn't vote to strike are saying they will if they re-ballot. That's what they've achieved. They've pissed off the apathetic teachers who weren't previously inclined to strike. Everyone is united in feeling insulted.

But at the same time they are asking for evidence to explain why there's a recruitment and retention crisis.

How can they not know? Where's the joined up thinking?

Whatever they offer has to be funded

Exactly this. I've rejected it for this reason. We cant afford to cut anymore staff

EpicBanana · 27/03/2023 20:43

Parent rather than a teacher and I think it's a disgusting offer. I'm right behind rejecting it and supportive of further strike action. The pay offer HAS to be fully funded. Schools have no money. The £1000 payout is an insult as well. Your energy bills would swallow that up immediately.

NightNightJohnBoy · 27/03/2023 20:32

It's as if she actually wants us to strike

Well, if we keep striking, a lot fewer schools will be in deficit for the year. Therefore, the govt look like they're doing a good job...
