Thing you do when you WFH...

...that you'd never do in the office.

My DH was shaving his beard In-between emails this week and it made me chuckle at the thought of him doing this in the office.

What things do you do while you WFH that would be completely inappropriate/slightly hilarious if you did them in the office?

Lay in the sun in the garden.

Hsve a midday Power Nap.

Have sex if DP is also keen.

Brieandjam · 26/03/2023 21:19

Fluffodils · 26/03/2023 21:19

I’d love to know what these jobs are that you handle calls without taking notes, attend meetings without listening or concentrating? Yes now and again but not on a regular basis?

Could you give us some insight by mentioning what the jobs are where you can do gardening, make the dinner, clean the house and have a nap all while working.

We have a cameras on at all times policy and any travel time I save using TEAMS is just filled up with more referrals.

I don't nap during the working day, but my actual list of tasks is fairly regimented, and repeats every month. My employers also have a work any place any time that suits rule. I get all my tasks done every month, plus time spent on seeking out CPD and looking to improve my own processes and manage to do plenty housework, crafts, hair washing etc.

Thankfully I inherited the processes from someone who has spent the last 15 years doing the same thing on repeat. A few excel tricks later and tasks which they used to spend 4 hours on takes about 1 now.

And this is why RTO is in place for many businesses.

NoEffingWay · 26/03/2023 21:25

I generally work during my working hours, but during screen breaks I'll make a coffee, put a load of washing on or throw the hoover around.
Our meetings are camera on, so I move from the sofa where I do most of my work and sit in a chair where the background is more professional.
I leave the tv on when I work for a bit of noise, but only really watch it when I am on my lunch break!

NineToFiveish · 26/03/2023 21:25

I achieve more at home than I do in an office, but I do prep dinner or sling a load of washing on during tea breaks or lunch time. Otherwise I work to my set hours- I have meetings throughout the day as well as ad-hoc calls.

I love the idea of a Pimms in the garden on a summer afternoon but that would be mad during work hours.

QueSyrahSyrah · 26/03/2023 21:28

Well. A lot of you are making my occasionally putting a load of washing in and having the cat on my lap seem like the very model of dedication to the company.

I only WFH occasionally now if I've got something that demands complete concentration and while I might wear more comfortable stuff I'm generally more focused than if I were in the office and smash through more work because of it.

Brieandjam · 26/03/2023 21:30

I definitely work harder and longer hours than when i had to go into the office. But the bwnefit of WFH is i get to occasionally put a load on washing on (2min) , shove in dryer (2min), fold (during meeting) , knit and shape bread (5 min) , marinate meat for dinner (2min) etc. I am still dedicated to my work and never take extended time off to watch tv or similar

Clingfilm · 26/03/2023 21:31

Another one amazed at all these camera off meetings! Surely this is when you catch up with other work on screen if you don't need to contribute?

Like PPs, I sometimes shower at lunch and put washes on when making a cup of tea. Definitely more productive at home than the office. Paranoid about my teams dot going yellow!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/03/2023 21:34

Work in running gear. Go for a run at lunchtime. Sometimes don't have a shower too later.,

Shoot hoops between meetings.

Turn camera and microphone off and cook tea in meetings! (Ok I've only done this once and it was a bit of an emergency).

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 26/03/2023 21:34

I’m a lecturer and have one day a week at home. I can get up later, tea on tap instead of having to pay Costa prices, and cat on my lap.

Teaching online is more intense than face to face, but in between classes I do laundry, fill the bird feeders, do a YouTube workout, and sort out dinner.

I’m camera on for teaching but am always in slippers!

SmartHome · 26/03/2023 21:34

Pluck my eyebrows, clean the windows in my office, cut my fringe, apply nail polish, dry and straighten my hair. This is all while on boring calls.

HoneyPotBee · 26/03/2023 21:36

Paranoid about my teams dot going yellow!

Open up a blank word doc and put something heavy on a random key. You will stay on green all day Wink

slowsundays · 26/03/2023 21:36

I shower on my lunch break and watch YouTube/Netflix/listen to music when doing admin and emails. Very rarely wear a bra at home either.

recklessgran · 26/03/2023 21:39

Feed the dishwasher, washing machine and cat.
Change beds
Life admin, phone calls etc
Do exercise with Joe Wicks on Youtube
Shag [DH semi retired]
Prep veg etc for evening meal
Online shop - e.g. grocery delivery
Receive said delivery and put away
Choose and book holidays
Potter in garden
Do a bit of work to justify my salary.
I know loads of people who WFH and none of them actually work for more than 4 hours a day. Some of them go out for leisurely lunches, visiting friends and supermarket shopping. I don't go out during my working day but do plenty at home interspersed with some work - frees up the weekends where before WFH you'd have to shop, do housework etc. at W/E

transformandriseup · 26/03/2023 21:43

I take short walks around my villages a couple of times a day instead of the breaks I would have normally taken in the office.

I often put the washing out too.

Echobelly · 26/03/2023 21:43

Sooo much laundry

Depilatory cream on my lovely perimenopause 'moustache' 😅

TheChosenTwo · 26/03/2023 21:45

I go for a spin class during my lunch break and might paint my nails during an occasional all staff teams meeting but other than that our meetings tend to be with only up to about 10-15 other people so camera is on and I will use my other screen to be carrying on working unless it’s something I need to actively contribute to.
I have left a really terrible school and job so I still pinch myself that I get to wfh in my own lovely office without the abuse and shit that came with my old job.
I don’t take the piss because it’s not me. I put washing on before I start work and will hang it out when I would next take a break.
I’d hate to be the one responsible for us all being sent back to the office full time by slacking!
I did love the freezing days though when I just lit the fire and sat in front of it with my laptop all day, that was such a lovely plus after the last few winters years of working in a school with all windows open and everyone sat working in coats!

Wow

I WFH for a contact centre and am on back to back phone calls my whole shift. I can browse on my phone or play candy crush or something if it's quiet but I can't move from my desk unless it's an allocated break or I need the toilet type thing
Usually handle between 150-200 calls a day

Tinkeytonkoldfruit · 26/03/2023 21:51

Nothing quite as extravagant but probably my fave is pyjama bottoms on whilst in court (teams obviously) and electric blanket on.

Lindy2 · 26/03/2023 21:53

I wear my dressing gown alot. I'm dressed underneath (usually) but I put my dressing gown on too because it's so warm and cosy.

The cat sits on my lap or desk. I have to keep pushing her off sleeping on my actual laptop though. Once she trod on the keyboard and the tab to get into my emails got deleted. Luckily I managed to sort that out myself as it might have been a bit awkward to explain to my boss.

I don't always have to be at my desk but I have to be available for any calls that come in. It means that some of the time I can hoover, garden, make lunch, watch TV etc as long as I'm available to answer the phone. Usually it's too busy to do that very much but when there's a quiet day it's nice.

EstherHazy · 26/03/2023 21:56

I moved to a lower paid lower responsibility job in 2021 and definitely now take more liberties than I did before when I worked enormous hours in the pandemic to keep a charity afloat. I think I'm still in recovery from that, and I'm inclined to think even if I do take small liberties I'm definitely much more efficient at home than the office environment with chatter all the time. For me ...

  • often rock up pretty unclean and still in PJs for the first hour as we rarely have calls before 10, and have a shower at lunch
  • clear the kitchen / dishwasher spread out over the day as short breaks from the computer screen
  • fart freely, stretch my legs out and have the room at my perfect temperature
  • listen to Classic FM
  • sometimes spend an hour on Rightmove
  • sometimes work on the sofa
  • sometimes work in bed
  • take extra breaks if a family member pops by / I take a longer personal call and work a bit late to make up for it
  • often don't wear a bra
  • clean the office room in work time
Hedjwitch · 26/03/2023 21:58

WFH is just an opportunityfor many people to take the piss,as evidenced above.

Moaning5 · 26/03/2023 21:59

I do all my ironing during meetings where my presence is required but I’m not on the agenda.I actually feel a bit miffed now if I find myself ironing on my own time.

I also spend my 30 minute break in my hot tub.
