How are tits, lips and high heels aspirational for young women?

Just watched The Apprentice on BBC and am following Rise and Fall on C4. Why are all the women styled like this? What does it say to younger women? Is it to signal feminine power? None of the successful young women I know dress this way. The equivalent dress code for men doesn’t bear thinking about, and guess what? We don’t see young men’s chests on display in the office, or even on TV.

Each year, the ‘brand’ is another version of the same thing. If that’s how they want to project themselves, it’s their business.

I don’t think that much of what this year’s contestants wore is flattering, but it’s their choice. The men also conform to a stereotype.

It seems to be style over substance mostly and the style isn’t appealing, to me.

pagopago · 24/03/2023 18:35

This year's series and the recent few years series have been 'sexed up'. Far more cleavage, ass and legs than ever before.

Also lots more up skirting camera angles.

Even Karren's cleavage was on display quite a lot.

I agree, the flouncy hair, lip fillers, Botox, heels are ubiquitous on women in The Apprentice. I would like to see the BBC extend their visibility to women with short hair and trousers.

I just struggle to take any woman seriously when they look like you could stick them to the window by their lips.
They just look so wrong.

Ilooklikesusiedent · 24/03/2023 18:36

I'm more of a flats, tats and hats kinda gal.

I can't walk in heels so I strut around in my brogues 😂

DD watches it and sees the epic false nails and wonders how they wipe their arse?

But they are not ‘being themselves’. They have been styled by tv companies is the point I’m making. Why aren’t a range of women’s styles shown on prime time tv shows. Augmented breasts and lips are a choice of a minority of successful career women. Tv is signalling this is the way women have to look to be successful.

I think your sample size is incredibly small and biased.
I've watched plenty of TV recently where there is a very accurate protrayal of the range of looks you see in a typical office, the BBC show Industry is a great example.

pagopago · 24/03/2023 18:37

Things were a lot different in the early series when Ruth Badger won.

Ilooklikesusiedent · 24/03/2023 18:38

Sorry I was meant to add that I'd love to be able to wear heels like that.

I have had botox and I felt amazing afterwards! Shame it has worn off!

Certainly not at my work. But female engineers are usually focused on work, not on wearing uncomfortable shoes tobget male attention.

Oh so women only wear high heels to get male attention? Gotcha.

The women and men don’t look like successful professionals in the City. Industry looks more likely though the storylines are mad.

Admitting how we are built, we have tits. We look better stand better with a bit of heel. Does it hold us back?
Would we be better at engineering or economics if we bound our chests and wore the boring greys and dark blue that the men wear?
Make-up and hairstyles - I pass.

We don’t stand better with a bit of a heel. We throw spinal alignment out and end up with bad backs and tight calf muscles if we wear them too often. And then we are only comfortable wearing them to take the stretch off calf muscles. So spine suffers even more. All for the sake of fashion and expectation? I pass.

LittleBearPad · 24/03/2023 18:39

The women and men in the Apprentice

dudsville · 24/03/2023 18:40

It's aspirational for some, not all, like most things.

Eh? Since when do women 'stand better' in heels? Heel make women adopt a certain posture and gait, but if it was genuinely 'better', wouldn't men want to adopt that posture and gait too?

If men aren't generally trying to get in on the act, I can guarantee it's not better.

Wearing heels and short skirts has no effect on my engineering knowledge or how focussed I am doing my job.

Architectahoy · 24/03/2023 18:42

When I worked on Liverpool St I loved people watching. That buzzy feeling of being surrounded by strong intelligent people regardless of colour, clothes or career choices.

Just loved it. So much opportunity and excitement.

I can't wear heels but many architects do! All day long. I'm truly envious (Ive always worn brogues)

Architectahoy · 24/03/2023 18:44

I DO wear short skirts and short dresses though.

pagopago · 24/03/2023 18:45

I wear heels and short skirts because they suit me and I look good in them. Not to attract men.

So it’s one extreme or the other? Not surgically enhancing yourself is “frumpy”?

Why is there no male equivalent for frumpy?

Yes it's interesting isn't it - got to have a boob job, Botox, lip fillers to be acceptable. Sod that for a game of soldiers. I'll stick to dowdy then.

As for the male equivalent - see Boris Johnson (although he presumably wears tailored suits - they don't help him though).

Are they being styled by the tv company though? I think a certain kind of person applies to the kind of shows you refer to. I stopped watching the apprentice eons ago but there was always a range of female dressing. The way some people dress for work wouldn’t look good on television or present the person as professional, because a lot of people look really throughother at work.

lieselotte · 24/03/2023 18:46

I've never worn high heels. Very occasionally - for an occasion like a black tie do. Never for everyday.

mrsfennel · 24/03/2023 18:46

@Pseudonamed That is outrageous!! How misjudged and ridiculous a comment.

lieselotte · 24/03/2023 18:48

I find it sad, depressing and concerning for young teenage girls who cannot achieve this “look

And spend money they haven't got, and put themselves through pain, trying to achieve it.

Plusnett · 24/03/2023 18:48

yes shorter length skirts are more flattering on me. I have short legs and midi/maxi never look right on me. Especially with a longer coat over them - I look like I’m wearing curtains almost. But if I wear a long coat with a shorter skirt, suddenly I look less squished and more structured

It wasn’t a sample-just the 2 highest profile tv shows on this week.
Again, I’m not criticising women for their choices, it’s the single stereotype on show. I agree the men are similarly prepped and dressed, but they aren’t showing the skin of their secondary sexual organs.
