How are tits, lips and high heels aspirational for young women?

Just watched The Apprentice on BBC and am following Rise and Fall on C4. Why are all the women styled like this? What does it say to younger women? Is it to signal feminine power? None of the successful young women I know dress this way. The equivalent dress code for men doesn’t bear thinking about, and guess what? We don’t see young men’s chests on display in the office, or even on TV.

I haven’t once called any of these women names, neither have I sneered at women who look “dowdy” or have barely brushed their hair.

Think beyond what’s in front of you and consider the social conditioning and pressures on young women in our image obsessed society.. the psychology behind it and the negative impact this has on women.

Absolutely.

And you and your bitchy comments are part of the problem. How do you not see that?! Youre judging women on their looks. Your not above it because you’re judging them because they’re using fillers, you’re exactly the same as anyone judging them on their natural looks.

Youre judging and being nasty about women based on their looks - natural or otherwise. YOU are the issue. Stop judging others for how they look and maybe they won’t be so bloody insecure about their looks and desire to change them. How are you not getting this?!

Vitriolinsanity · 25/03/2023 11:44

@NunNunNun it's not just girls, but boys too. Presently knawing off own lips not to tell DS his super new do makes him look like a 🦙

THisbackwithavengeance · 25/03/2023 11:52

It all boils down to the male gaze and being sexually attractive to men. All this bullshit spouted on here about looking nice and preferring to wear tight clothes and heels and have lip fillers to please themselves.

Bollox. And we all know it. Let's just be honest. Women compete against other women for the best men and for attention.

Men don't feel the same pressure hence why they don't wear tight clothes and alter their natural features with make up or surgical enhancements.

Not all the younger women are dressed like this, the same as in the real world. I know what you mean of there are enough of them with this look for it to be a trend. Past threads have said it's class connected.

Hair extensions, severely ironed hair, laminated eyebrows, orange tan, trout lips. The cheap filler is the worst thing, the procedure not without risks, and even overfilling can leave lip skin sagging.

The natural look is also a big thing at the moment with other young women, with natural wave or curly hair and a more natural makeup. I wonder if it's in reaction to the very fake look. I hope so.

You are incredibly naive if you think men don’t feel the same pressure and don’t alter their looks. Steroid use is rife in many gyms.

SmileyClare · 25/03/2023 12:19

Fuck me, I’m not suggesting for one minute that women with lip filler are excluded from The Apprentice.

Where are the 40 plus women who want investment into their own business? Where are the women wearing flats, or short hair or the women with any kind of different style? Why is this sexualised look being presented as the look for aspiring business women?

Ive tried to suggest looking beyond the superficial in front of you, you know looking at it critically?

Why so resistant and defensive to questioning the psychology behind it? Why shut the conversation down by crying “judgemental”.

I suspect they don't apply, it they do perhaps they aren't the best applicants. You have to largely be able to walk away from your job/business/family for several weeks and maybe that doesn't appeal to people in their 40s. As not all of the women this series have filler, breast enhancements and whatever else then you are criticising a few of them and seemingly think they're setting a bad example therefore it's not wild to assume you'd like them excluded is it.

Maybe offer this advice to yourself? You clearly do not understand a single word I am saying. I AM addressing the psychology behind it, and stating that people like you are part of the bloody problem!! IF they are insecure about their looks it’s because other people judge them - people like you.

And where are there 40+ men? Who are balding and have yellow teeth? You’re making this all about women because this is a YOU problem. You just refuse to see it. You’re the one judging women, commenting about their looks and being nasty under the guise of ‘but what about the children?!’ But the problem here is that we judge others nastily over their looks - which is precisely what you’re doing. Judgments like yours are the catalyst. And the fact that you can’t see that is the whole problem with society.

NunNunNun · 25/03/2023 12:38

Also, I’ve just Googled this years Apprentice cast and there are four women who don’t appear to have had cosmetic enhancement.

lieselotte · 25/03/2023 12:46

The thing is people say that women on here are being bitchy. But why is showing off your tits considered to be professional?

Would we think it professional if a man wore really tight trousers that showed off his bits? Or wore his shirt open to his waist to show off his "manly" chest? Men just don't do it, and women shouldn't either.

It is true that men build themselves up in gyms (so do some women) but that is a somewhat healthier way of going about things, drug use aside.

When on the apprentice are they doing this though?

The week when they pitched to the three women from Waitrose, who were all in what I see women wear in the city in real life, the difference in styles was stark. I think the way the apprentice styles the women says a lot about Alan sugar.

The Waitrose women were very stylish!

Chilloutsnow · 25/03/2023 13:01

@hippyroses

I thought those Waitrose women were awful. To me, they came across as spiteful and jealous. They even looked the candidates up and down and their tone was horrific.

The word “judging” is thrown around so much on SM it’s lost all meaning.

If I was judging women on how they look, I would be making assumptions about who they are as a person based on their appearance. I’m simply not.

Women aren’t rushing to get their lips filled to bursting because people like me voice that it’s reminiscent of a sex doll or express dismay and wonder why they feel compelled to alter themselves in this way.

I am not the reason women in society feel insecure. I completely disagree with what you’re saying. I‘m questioning the narrative promoted on reality tv.

I respect your opinion so please respect mine with out “judging” my intentions as “bitchy” and “nasty” or saying I’m probably someone “who barely bothers to brush their hair” (a comment upthread)
How judgemental!!!!!

Nice try to flip it on me, but no. Your comments are the root of the issue. Sorry you can’t see that, hopefully when you quit discussing womens looks in a negative fashion things will start to change. Until then, the rise of plastic surgery is down to this sort of behaviour. It’s self prophetic. I feel sorry for women who endure discussions about their looks like this.

But they were stylish. Jealous though? I didn't get that.

They were harsh, admittedly, but the presentations and products were really poor and all badly thought out. A waste of their time perhaps.

Chilloutsnow · 25/03/2023 13:20

@hippyroses

The Waitrose women were stylish no doubt about it. One of them did however look one of the candidates up and down. Irrespective of how rubbish the product was, I thought that came across as spiteful and he’s jealous. It was clearly filmed and said more about her as a person to be honest. Not cool.

Chilloutsnow · 25/03/2023 13:20

Sorry no idea why I put “he’s”. Typing quickly.

Jealous of what? Why do think they were jealous? You think they were envious the women pitching a product to their store had “nicer” clothes, or bigger lips, or were younger than them?

Most women aren’t walking around like setting balls of jealousy are they.

I thought they looked pissed off and a bit impatient because the contestants were so pushy about their terrible dog food product and wouldn’t listen to any criticism. It was pretty cringeworthy.

hippyroses · 25/03/2023 13:24

I didn't notice they looked the candidates up and down, but to be fair some were inappropriately dressed for a professional business pitch. One was wearing a super short white chiffon shirt dress.

Chilloutsnow · 25/03/2023 13:29

@hippyroses

It doesn’t matter. I know I wouldn’t have looked them up and down. Common sense tells you it’s a TV show and they’re going to be “done up” so to speak. Just not cool.

Chilloutsnow · 25/03/2023 13:33

@SmileyClare

It was fine to be irritated at their rubbish products but openly looking someone up and down reeks of jealousy. You can be jealous of all sorts of things. Perhaps they were jealous of their sparkiness? Their playful pitches? Their ability to get up there and have a go at a pitch? A woman’s confidence? Who knows. All I know is looking someone up and down with a face on you says more about you as a person.

SmileyClare · 25/03/2023 13:41

Goodness if you walk into a business meeting wearing a short lacy white dress styled like a nightie or a fluorescent green two piece then good for you if you want to.

You’d expect people to look at your outfit or shoes though. It’s unusual attire for a business meeting.

I don’t understand going all out with a bright statement outfit, big hair or bright red lips or whatever and then getting offended when someone does a double take or looks at you “funny”.

To assume this is jealousy seems a little immature and self absorbed.
