Just had the worst interview ever!

(Lighthearted!!)

Pleeease help me feel better. I was just interviewed by a local authority. I had all the "essential" and "desirable" skills and qualifications.

I prepped for hours and hours and my answers were just "um" & "oh"...The questions were not really what I expected (not in the job description or job role spec!)

God I'm so embarrassed. How many days until they forget they interviewed an idiot? 😂😂😂

Update! I didn't get the job because they filled it internally.

However I did score second highest and they interviewed over 10 people (over 200 applied!) So I'm quite impressed actually.

Sorry you didn't get it, but that's brilliant. Should give you confidence for next time, sounds like you actually did great.

I was 7 months into maternity leave when I had a job interview for the local council, they asked me for what I knew about what the council did and I said "um, bins and schools, and stuff" it still to this day makes me cringe when I remember it, I blame baby brain

I actually phoned them 3 days later because i couldn't forget and I apologised to the hiring manager for such a bad interview and asked to not be blacklisted from future interviews for being so crap. She was lovely and said to maybe do some prep in future Blush it happens to us all OP..

I went for an interview for a Customer Relations job once and told them that I didn't like talking to people on the phone...

I interviewed for a PA job and said my weakness was bad organisation. I have absolutely no idea why I said it because I am, and was, very organised. I did not get the job.

If it helps I once cried during an interview for a till operator job. Ah, the joys of life.

Worstinterviewever · 24/03/2023 11:35

Thanks!

I am a little relieved that I don't have a low paying technical role. Because that job wasn't due a pay review for 2 years!!

😱 £21k until 2025 ish

Well that's a case of when the bad news is good news! Well done on putting together such an impressive application OP. Unfortunately often with LAs they'll be going through the process externally whilst already having filled the vacancy internally.

WimbyAce · 24/03/2023 12:09

I am awful at interview. I just over think it I think and don't put myself across well at all. Hence I have been in the same job for years!!

SofaSpuds · 24/03/2023 12:25

Sorry to hear you didn't get the job, hope something better comes your way.

Two worst interviews for me:
1 internal - forgot I was supposed to be in professional mode and when asked by HR where did I see myself in 5 years I said "5 years closer to retirement" 😬 I'm still there, but didn't get that job.
Other external - I couldn't open the water bottle they'd left on the table, one of the interviewers saw me struggling and had to do it for me. I did get that job 😁

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 24/03/2023 12:30

I imagine it was a done deal way before the interview if an internal candidate got it.

It used to happen all the time when I was nhs

Showdogworkingdog · 24/03/2023 13:03

I once got up and walked before the interview was over. Not only could I not answer the questions, I literally didn’t know what the fuck they were asking about. I was polite about it but I was cringing inside and did for ages afterwards when I thought about it. It will pass, fear not, it wasn’t the right one for you Cake

Mischance · 24/03/2023 13:51

I hate this game playing with internal candidates.

probably they asked questions not related to the job, to make sure you didn't do well, probably always going to the that persons job

Worstinterviewever · 24/03/2023 14:10

@CitizenofMoronia Yes, I think you are right!

I went for a job interview last year doing my current job (at the time) at a new local authority

They asked me to give examples of schemes I worked on and I couldn't remember a single one- 8 years of experience vanished completely from my head, I looked like I'd just walked in randomly off the street.

Didn't get it but got a better job elsewhere now and am super happy

Adarajames · 25/03/2023 19:45

Look at the job website Indeed, been various tech positions that are work from home, and generally, better salaries too!

My most scary interview was for a youth work role when there were half a dozen of the kids on the interview panel along with multiple adults!

WildUnchartedWaters · 11/07/2023 20:10

I was late and so flustered I sat beside instead of opposite the panel.

Actually an okay interview but I'm convinced that's blown it.
