39yo, 5ft 4, 144lbs. Walk about 11,000 steps a day (4 miles).

An example of a usual day:

Breakfast: porridge measured out - 280cals

Snack: 2 ryvita with Philadelphia light. Approx 100 cal.

Lunch: Baxter's chicken broth 164cal. 1 slice of rye 120cal

Dinner: grilled chicken breast, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, red cabbage, red onion, half a pitta bread. Approx 430cal.

Approx 1000 calories.

Would you lose or gain?

I would lose weight and be miserable. It reminds me of my skinny days when I lived like this. I am 5 foot 4 and weight around 8 stone 4. Something is wrong if you're not losing weight on this diet. There must be some miscalculation somewhere.

I now follow low carb/high fat and it has changed my life. Totally revolutionary.

Totally agree. Either something wrong you need to see a doctor for or its like secret eaters.

That’s exactly how it works…the rate you burn calories varies enormously from person to person. You can’t say it’s 1800. That’s an average, so by definition will include a wide range of rates- from 1400-2500! That is how averages work.

I maintain a steady weight at 1700 and I exercise A LOT! ( 10k steps is minimum I do- just for everyday stuff before exercise)

1400 is at the extreme lower end of what a person would burn doing little to no exercise. it’s just fact. The average is actually 1600-2400 so 1400 is way under that.
I think people grossly underestimate calorie intake over a prolonged period of time (ie weeks) and that’s where calories slip in. One meal out with drinks and that’s added an extra 100 cals to your daily total for the whole month (in theory)

Robin233 · 21/03/2023 18:59

Because you are eating so little your body thinks you're starving so has slowed down your metabolism right down.
I have a very fast metabolism
But I eat a lot so am constantly reving up my metabolism
Im like a racing snake.
I do eat very healthy thought - but plenty of treats at the weekend
Go up to 1500 cals minimum.
(I never count calories - just a stick ti beat yourself with)
Make sure you're exercising
A 20 minute walk a day is fine.

You're likely missing calories in something during preparation, drinks, oils, sauces. Or portion size.

If you want to check this. Try this for one or two weeks.

Have an egg on one slice of toast for breakfast. No butter, mayo.

Lunch and dinner have a frozen meal that is 400 calories or less.
Then just have plain tea and water. Skip the wine for the 1 or 2 weeks you do it.

If you don't lose after 2 weeks of this, then go to th GP for a blood workup.

If you do lose weight, you know you're eating more than 1100 calories with your other diet.

WildFlowerBees · 21/03/2023 19:00

Have you checked your daily energy expenditure?

tdeecalculator.net

Are you eating when you're hungry and stopping when you're full not stuffed?

There's lots of reasons you might have plateaued. Instead of the scales have you noticed how your clothes feel or measured yourself?

For me personally I go by how I fit in clothing and what my measuring tape says scales aren't always correct.

Robin233 · 21/03/2023 19:01

Do not cut out carbs
You need that for energy and will feel terrible.

Cherrysherbet · 21/03/2023 19:03

That would bore me to death, but I would lose weight on that.

Chilloutsnow · 21/03/2023 19:11

I would lose weight and my hair would fall out. I would also feel very depressed and empty mentally. I know this as I had a similar calorie consumption after my jaw surgery. After 6 weeks I was gaunt and depressed. The day I could fit some mash and cheese in was happy day indeed.

hamstersarse · 21/03/2023 19:13

When you eat calories this low for a long stretch, it’s not that your metabolism ‘lowers’ as such, it’s more that your body starts to use what it has wisely.

Energy to grow hair? Nah, can do without that

Energy to make new collagen for your skin? Nah, luxury

Energy to keep you warm? No thanks

Energy for your brain to work out that complex problem? I don’t think so

Unicornsaregreat · 21/03/2023 19:14

Lose massively

Hedonism · 21/03/2023 19:15

I would be skinny and cold and very very grumpy.

@PurpleWisteria1 Trust me, I know my body and I know how many calories it needs to survive, to lose weight, to maintain. 1,800 is just an average, some women need less and some need more. I need less. It's not a stealth brag just my experience 🤷🏻‍♀️

My BMR is around 1300.

I WFH 5 days a week at a desk.

The walking is mostly 1 hour a day, according to fit bit I do 7000 on my main walk in about an hour, then the rest is general moving about/housework.

I also do yoga twice a week for 1hr (1 online class, 1 in person class).

Fitbit says I burn between 1900-2000 cals a day.

PurpleWisteria1 · 21/03/2023 18:51

No. You wouldn’t maintain. You are burning 1800 calories per day by just being alive and doing normal activities. Don’t be ridiculous.
Honestly some weird stealth boasts on here / competitive low calories brags. Weird.

I'm glad someone said this because I'm Shock at some of these responses.

MistySkiesAreGone · 21/03/2023 19:23

I'd really recommend looking at the 5.2 diet (it is the follow on from the Fast 800). You eat normally for 5 days and fast (800 calories) for 2 days. The fast days are high in fat so you are not really hungry. An example would be - avocado and eggs for breakfast, a lentil and feta salad for lunch, steak and mushroom and green veg for dinner, some natural zero fat yoghurt and raspberries.

Or just try and keep it under 75g carb a day, and make sure you have enough good fats.

Theblondehobbit · 21/03/2023 19:24

Are you posting this because you're eating and living like this but not losing weight? If so you will find you might receive replies telling you that you are not counting calories properly or that your body has hit starvation mode or is refusing to work with you (the science about starvation mode is debatable but leaning towards a great big nope, otherwise how could anyone end up underweight)

I had been eating feck all and yet I was losing weight at a glacial like rate. My reason why:

I have hypothyroidism, which slows your metabolism and this has been treated with Levothyroxine, my thyroid bloods went back to a normal range but I was still suffering and not losing weight until I started taking them an hour before eating each morning (the meds don't work unless you take on an empty stomach and then don't eat for an hour) . I added T3 to my regime too, to cover all the bases. Some people just need I wee bit more of a push.
I hope that helps if it is indeed your issue. Go get your thyroid checked if you haven't already, at least then you'll know for sure.

MistySkiesAreGone · 21/03/2023 19:26

I don't think a long term diet is a good idea though. 12 weeks max on any diet IMHO. Then you need to eat whatever you feel like, keeping portion size in mind and trying to make healthy choices, and doing regular exercise.

I would Lose Both weight and my will to live

Brilliant. Me too

pinkthree · 21/03/2023 19:27

You're probably not eating enough calories tbh OP, have you worked out how many calories you should be consuming a day first of all?

This is interesting. I have got a fitness watch (not an online one as I haven't got a phone), and I have apparently done 14k steps today (bit crap, but there you go), which equates to 252 calories used. So I wonder about some of these devices! It says it's 4.1 miles; again, I wonder what the truth is.

I make 25g of rice if I'm having a curry. 60g is a huge portion!

Itsallovernow23 · 21/03/2023 19:30

I'd gain or maintain but I'd feel so hungry and weak. Weirdly even though more calories this is what I lose on: lunch everyday baked kale with garlic, one boiled egg, cherry tomatoes and tofoo (300 kcals), snack babybel (100kcals) can't resist a biscuit (70kcals) dinner tom yum soup, rice noodles, tofoo or chicken (500kcals) and a packet of crisps (150kcals). If I run 6k in 30 mins and burn 350kcals I usually make that up with wine. I know I'm not massively healthy but I'm full and feel strong and lose 1.5lbs a week.

Itsallovernow23 · 21/03/2023 19:32

I donr track fitbit calories or waling. That's just your basic metabolism.

AnnaWrecksYa · 21/03/2023 19:32

Also, getting divorced is brilliant if you want to lose weight. I lost two stone that I couldn't afford to lose. Grin

FlowerArranger · 21/03/2023 19:35

Sorry, I don't have time to read the entire thread.

Yes, you would lose but this isn't sustainable.

Try intermittent fasting.
2 Mediterranean type meals at either end.
I.e. lots of vegetables and some lean protein.
Some fruit and/or carrots in between.
And/or a boiled egg if you're really ravenous.

Stay clear of UPF, sugar in all its devious forms, and don't drink calories.

Wombats23 · 21/03/2023 19:36

I'm fat enough to actually self-refer to a dietician. I've been referred before and it was pants but this time, it was excellent.

There was a support group and booklets! It looked a lot like the material put out by Precision Nutrition and it was very good. They don't measure calories for all sorts of reasons but use hand size for portion control. All about balance and good nutrition.

If you diet with poor nutrition, you'll end up losing muscle and then when you gain weight, you'll add fat and over time, your body composition goes to pot.

Zoe Nutrition do lots of good podcasts too. You don't need to do the testing but it was super-interesting, especially the blood glucose measurements, as that more than anything nudged me to change lifestyle, no more rice, bananas or oats! Bit more chocolate weirdly. :-)

Suzi888 · 21/03/2023 19:37

I like the food- don’t eat chicken /soup but other than that.
I’d lose weight on it, may actually try it for a week.

Perhaps it’s too many carbs? Don’t they turn to sugar? (no idea).

Sunday would be a good day! 🍷 Have you tried dropping the wine ? Not every week, but to see if it makes a difference.
