Really looking for a book that is so utterly fantastic that it's stayed with you for a long time and you could re-read it over and over again. Any suggestions are welcome.

Great idea for a thread, watching with interest... been a long time since I was blown away by a book!

Years ago I read (and 're read) The women's room by (I think) Marilyn French, it really opened my eyes.

Lightning by Dean Koontz

Michelle Pavers Thin Air, seriously spooky but I love to settle down and re-read it quite a lot.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. I've only read it once because my fear is re-reading it will ruin it for me!

There are a couple but The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry has such a strong message at it's core it actually changed my life. After reading it, I felt happier to be myself. It's beautiful.

Pay it Forward. Then I read everything else by the same author. Now a favourite.

Revolt in paradise by k'tut tantri. Amazing story!

A boy called it by dave pelzer
It stayed with me because it was a harrowing read.

The alchemist

Another vote for Marilyn French's The Women's Room. I've bought it for friends it affected me so deeply.

The bell jar.
To kill a mocking bird.

Both "The Colour Purple" - first read at A level, and "To Kill A Mockingbird" stayed with me. The Colour Purple opened my eyes at that age to rape, and famalial rape at that, the coldness of some of the characters, and to the injustice of life.

Hopefully these two are allowed - both have never left me since I have read them however I would not rush to read either of them again because they were so sad.

Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain and A Pin to see the Peep Show by F Tennyson Jesse

Topbird29 · 19/03/2023 21:24

And "Schindler's Ark" - the book Schindler's List is based on. Shows both the utter evil, but also the amazing good and strength in people. Read before the film was made.

Oh I've just remembered Tuesday's with Morrie by Mitch Albom and the lovely bones.

I think Anna Karenina. It immerses you completely in time and place. I’ve read it several times.

Desert Flower by Waris Darie.

CatNamedEaster · 19/03/2023 21:34

The Heart's Invisible Furies.
I loved it more than almost any other book I've read.

The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August.
I only read it a few months ago but I need to read it again to get my head arround it.😀

The Five. The story of the five victims of Jack the Ripper. Such a brilliant account of them, giving them the respect their lives deserved and almost totally ignoring their murderer's part.

Every time I read Twopence to Cross The Mersey I wonder how Helen and her family survived.
