Has anyone actually received compensation from an airline for a delay?

Has anyone actually received compensation from an airline for a delay?

I claimed directly with the airline under EU Passenger Rights regulations for a three-hour-plus delay. The complaint was acknowledged and compensation was promised in ten to twelve weeks. Except it's been another couple of months since the 10-12 weeks was up.

The only way to contact the airline about this is via an online portal, and I can see that someone is reading my messages. But the case is marked as closed and no-one replies. Calling the general helpline ends up with no-one that can help and I get referred back to the portal.

The airline in question is Corendon (from flights to Turkey).

I suspect this compensation isn't ever going to come through, right?

I've said I'll get in touch with the Civil Aviation Authority but I'm not clear whether they have any 'teeth' at all.

We went through a no win no fee solicitor to get compensation from Ryanair, and won. I have heard it's almost impossible without legal expertise.

ClassicLib · 17/03/2023 19:18

Yes. We were delayed by almost 4 hours on a TUI flight last year due to technical & crewing issues on the aircraft which was originally scheduled to operate our flight, ie factors within the airline’s control. This is crucial : You won’t get compensation from BA because your flight was delayed by striking airport workers in Marseilles, or from EasyJet because the weather in Oslo made it unsafe to land, for example. These factors are outside the airline’s reasonable control.

We claimed via TUI’s website and received €400 / £350 each in compensation without quibble and within a few weeks. I gave full details of flight numbers, dates, details of what we were told by ground crew, the registration of the third party aircraft which was chartered to operate our flight, and precise timings in my claim and made references to EU regulation 261.

Yes but I had to go through a no win no fee. 23 hour delay with TUI in 2013.

PolaDeVeboise · 17/03/2023 19:32

Yup, thrice with Easyjet (two within weeks of other a few years ago, once last year), and once with BA this year.

Jellifer · 17/03/2023 19:32

Yes with TAP from Portugal. Took 11 months of chasing until it was finally paid.

RedCarsGoFaster · 17/03/2023 19:34

Yes. Used the MSE "Resolver" tool and had the full cheque in 3wks. From Ryanair.

FlyingCherries · 17/03/2023 19:38

I used the resolver tool too and it took about a month.

Marymary987 · 17/03/2023 19:40

Yes , we were delayed 3 hours exactly on arrival with Ryanair, claimed direct and had the money within 2 months. Was actually very surprised.

FuoriComeUnBalcone · 17/03/2023 19:41

The airline rejected my claim so I took it to the CAA, I seem to remember, and it was paid out with no problems.

redspottedmug · 17/03/2023 19:42

Yes. Aer Lingus via the resolver tool. Came through within a month.

This was pre Brexit. Does that legislation still apply?

Phos · 17/03/2023 19:43

From British Airways yes no problem.

From Enter Air (worst airline ever) no. Even the solicitors seemed to give up on them.

BlueThursday · 17/03/2023 19:43

We were delayed over 5 hours when we went to get married 10 years ago.

our party of 14 got €500 each going through resolver

We are also awaiting compensation from corendon from July. If you look online there are others in the same boat.

I have raised a claim with the civil aviation authority over 12 weeks ago and I have not had a response from them as they are also not being answered by corendon.

bevelino · 17/03/2023 19:45

Yes via Virgin Atlantic. We received compensation and an upgrade on our flight.

FettleOfKish · 17/03/2023 19:48

I got compensation from BA earlier this year for an overnight delay. It took a few weeks longer than they'd said to come through but was very straightforward and they didn't try to wriggle out of it.

MrsBunnyEars · 17/03/2023 19:58

I was amazed by how easy BA was to deal with for this. My compensation was almost exactly the cost of my flight, and it arrived in a few days (after an overnight delay when they put us up in a very fancy hotel).

Ah, my claim is from Corendon Airlines from July, also.

My next step is the Civil Aviation Authority, but it sounds like that's not worked for you as yet.

I'm not giving up!

We got compensation from BA a few years ago - I think it was about an 8 hour delay on a long haul flight. Easy to claim and got it back no problem.

MaidOfSteel · 17/03/2023 20:08

We took Virgin Atlantic to the small claims court and got our compensation.

Mitchumforthewin · 17/03/2023 20:09

Really easy both times I have done it - most recently through EasyJet for a 4 hour delay. I did it on their website and had £800 within a couple of weeks (way more than our flights cost!)

It was the airline's fault, and they have agreed that my party is due compensation under EU Regulation 261. They just now won't actually pay out or communicate.

Actually, it was a Tui package holiday (using Corendon Airlines flights) - I wonder if I should have/could claim directly from Tui...

I actually got £1200 back from BA once for delayed flight + missing next flight and ended up waiting around at the transit airport for 7hrs overnight with a toddler and a 3 month old.

user1471517095 · 17/03/2023 20:12

Yep, delayed 6 hours with Tui. The plane needed a new tyre. Got our compensation a couple of days later.

largeprintagathachristie · 17/03/2023 20:14

Darn. Because Tui scheduled us with a separate airline, the claim has to go through the airline rather than them.
