I hate my HP printer! Can you recommend have a different brand for use at home that isn't crazy expensive for ink ? I just want to be able to print and scan the occasional thing but my printer is SO needy!

We have not one but two HP printers
According to my DH they have just put a block on any generic ink cartridges which stops the printer working
IT's super temperamental when you're just trying to quickly print DC homework or something.
We had an HP ink subscription and when we had that somehow the ink was lasting ages and we didn't get as many cartridges as I am sure we were meant to but then when we stopped it, it seemed to need a new input twice a month or something.

Anyway I have had enough.
Apols for rant if you have read this far
Someone must have some thoughts on brother or someone else?
Thanks so much

I have had a series of HP printers, some expensive, some cheap, and every single one of them has been shit.

Today I got a new Canon printer but despite spending an hour on the phone to my IT dept at work, and a further hour by myself googling and watching YouTube, it would not connect. So I've boxed it up and it's going back to Amazon tomorrow.

So after reading endless reviews and places like here and elsewhere, I have just ordered this Epson Workforce from Amazon: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08HZ7B3HV?psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&ref_=chk_typ_imgToDp

Hoping it'll be third time lucky!

I fell out with HP too and bought an Epsom one - the kind with the tanks that you fill up yourself.

It's absolutely crap. The ink quality is appalling, really faint and washed out. You can't print photos with it or even any kind of picture because it always looks like the ink is running out. Online reviews say the same.

Also, it only prints on one side of the paper so I go through twice as much. Hate it. Wish I'd stayed friends with my HP which was much better quality.

I bloody hate my HP. Won’t connect
to the Wi-Fi half the time and won’t print black, whether I feed it generic or try to tempt it back to life with an HP-branded cartridge. Git.

declutteringmymind · 17/03/2023 20:41

Epson eco tank

I have a canon PIXMA, and it's brilliant. Had it years, and never had any issues. Can buy dupe cartridges from Tesco etc, for a fraction of the branded ink, and it never fails me. It has a built in scanner, and can print/send directly from and to your phone with no wires etc. It was only cheap when we got it (under £50 I think), and it's lasted so well.

Agree to all the above on HP printers. Mine does not ever connect via wifi.
I am going to try a laser.

Agree wholeheartedly

Yes!!! Never prints black. What a nightmare of a fucking printer .

WalkAwaySugarbear · 17/03/2023 21:50

I'd never have a HP printer again. I now have a Brother Laser jet. It's great, works every time. The cartridges are v expensive but don't need replacing as often (or dry out) so works out the same IMO.

Basilis · 17/03/2023 21:53

We've had Epson's, Canons and HPs. All shite. All packed up working after a year or two. All guzzled expensive ink. Broken Britain.

Wheretheskyisblue · 18/03/2023 17:21

Those of you that have lasers what are they like for printing photos? My canon pixma has died after 8 years and I am wondering about replacing it with a laser. Mainly photo printing though and maybe 5 pages of text a week.

Brother HL L2340 D. Not a moment's trouble with it in years. No colour just black printing.

sanityisamyth · 18/03/2023 23:03

Love my HP printer. Love the Instant Ink system too. Backs away slowly

NamelessNancy · 18/03/2023 23:08

Like some other posters we have an Epson eco tank. Probably about 6-7 years old and have spent no more than £20 on ink refills in that time.

Tenementfunster · 18/03/2023 23:40

Brother laser. CW 45 something. The least arseholish printer. You can get the cheap non brother toner and unlike HP, it lets you print using them.
have had it 5 years. It’s brilliant

Rollingdownland · 21/03/2023 18:19

OK well my third time lucky turned out third time crap. My Epson refused to pair with my internet after the first time, when it raised my hopes by pairing straight away. It is going back to Amazon and I am now stuck.

Do you get wired printers? I think this will have to be my future.

Why is modern life so hard!

Thelnebriati · 21/03/2023 22:13

Our Epson is wired to the PC, and other users in the house can use it wirelessly if they are signed into our network.

Rollingdownland · 29/03/2023 15:58

OK, after working through an HP Deskjet, a Canon Pixma and an Epson something, I now have a Brother laser printer and I LOVE IT, purely because it works.

No messing about with Instant Ink membership, it only prints black and white (and scans colour), but it is so straightforward and has restored my faith. Three of us linked our laptops to it and it worked for all, no issues, unlike my HP which would only answer to one of us.

(And I bought the Brother because I read that article posted by @noodlezoodle - wasn't even a brand I was really aware of before, so thank you!)

SleekMamma · 30/03/2023 02:21

Love this "Brother laser. CW 45 something. The least arseholish printer."
Should be their next marketing campaign!

Iris1976 · 30/03/2023 02:26

I gave up on cheap printers when I bought new ink at almost the same price as the printer and then it never bloody worked again,I have the Epson ecotank now and love it.

Polis · 30/03/2023 08:11

I have a Xerox laser. It just works. Every time.

julie81 · 30/03/2023 08:22

Brother is the best one I have ever had. Ink lasts forever on mine and when says low on ink it is ages until it runs out. My
Partner has had 3 HP whilst mine is still going.

Mostar · 30/03/2023 10:23

HP printers are evil. I bought one a few months ago and had to send it back after a couple of weeks. Worst piece of kit I've ever bought. Sometimes I'd have been quicker just writing stuff out by hand, and the Instant Ink subscription thing is an absolute racket.

HarryBurns · 30/03/2023 10:31

Very timely thread. I was just about to buy an expensive eco tank (c.£500) to replace the HP which needs the same time/attention of a toddler.

However, the amazon reviews say that people have had problems with connecting to MacBooks. I need something that can do colour and cope with a decent no. of pages (GCSE past papers + mark schemes being printed daily here and take a lot of pages).

Are any of the eco tank owners, connecting to a mac wirelessly which is a deal breaker for me. I don't mind a big initial outlay if I could find a printer which doesn't need weekly intervention.
