I hate my HP printer! Can you recommend have a different brand for use at home that isn't crazy expensive for ink ? I just want to be able to print and scan the occasional thing but my printer is SO needy!

We have not one but two HP printers
According to my DH they have just put a block on any generic ink cartridges which stops the printer working
IT's super temperamental when you're just trying to quickly print DC homework or something.
We had an HP ink subscription and when we had that somehow the ink was lasting ages and we didn't get as many cartridges as I am sure we were meant to but then when we stopped it, it seemed to need a new input twice a month or something.

Anyway I have had enough.
Apols for rant if you have read this far
Someone must have some thoughts on brother or someone else?
Thanks so much

We have brother laser printer. Just black and white, the cartridges are expensive (50euro) but last 1500 pages. Laser printers are a bigger outlay but better value as far as I understand.

wonkylegs · 17/03/2023 12:14

I have an A3 epson but buy refill inks from Refresh cartridges.
I've bought from them for years and have only had one problem cartridge which they replaced without argument.
The printer asks me every time I refill if I really want to use unbranded cartridges but just ignore and carry on.
I saved the full cost of the printer in one year by not buying epson ink so I wasn't too worried about the warranty

CatOnTheChair · 17/03/2023 12:15

All home printers are absolute bastards, designed to frustrate and be as awkward as possible.
Actually, our HP is possibly the least frustrating I've had so far. But it is needy.

zebette · 17/03/2023 12:16

I feel your pain! I've spent hours of my life on the phone to HP Support and when they finally agreed to send me a replacement for my (tempera)mental printer, the bloody replacement printer started nonsense within 24 hours. So I returned the original to the shop, sent the replacement back and bought a lovely straightforward Canon - not one moment of difficulty since. Aside from the fact that HP keeps re-setting itself as my default printer despite me changing this every time it happens, removing the device, uninstalling the software, and everything else I can think of. HP has become my stalker 🙄
Ink is never cheap but I'm definitely spending less on Canon ink than HP were wanting.

Zer · 17/03/2023 12:17

My Canon printer has been going for 10 years and I've used dupe cartridges for at least 6 of those. I am very fond of it.

Possiblynotever · 17/03/2023 12:18

Agree to all the above on HP printers. Mine does not ever connect via wifi.
I am going to try a laser.

Brazilagogo · 17/03/2023 12:18

I don’t know whether this will be of use to you but I have a Brother which is 11 years old and still going strong after printing an average of 50 sheets of double sided text a week. I’ve used compatible ink virtually all of the time since I got it but at the time I bought it, it was noted to have a better ink consumption than other brands.

You could see whether you can buy compatible ink for the model you want.

TheFormidableMrsC · 17/03/2023 12:20

I've got an HP3630 which was really reasonable and has been a real workhorse. I subscribe to HP ink for £1.99 a month now my printing has dropped down and they just send me new cartridges when mine are low.

blumppump · 17/03/2023 12:21

I've an Epsom workforce and I've never used anything but compatible cartridges in it

Thelnebriati · 17/03/2023 12:28

Epson Ecotank is an expensive purchase but you can use compatible ink so its cheap to run. They do a monochrome model and a colour printer.

coffeeginandkindness · 17/03/2023 12:31

Oh wow - wasn't expecting so many replies
I am sorry that some of you have also been in same situation - I have visions now of the HP stalker Printers too
I will look into Laser
It's just another REALLY boring purchase that I don't really want to makeHmm
(obvs when I sell my old HP printers on marketplace I'll be saying completely different things Grin

I have a personal HP and quite like it , the WiFi range is good .
I also have a company printer , cannon maxify it's terrible!

My personal and company laptop will conect to the HP , hich is in the spare back bed room while o am downstairs neither will connect to the cannon unless they are set right next to it .
The cannon also takes 3 minutes minimum to sort itself out when you change the ink.

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 17/03/2023 13:14

Thanks for the thread OP.
I've an ancient A3 Canon printer in the study which hasn't been used for a year (or 3) and had an "all in one" Epson in the living room...had - it went to the tip a few weeks back.
I need a new A4 printer so will look at the recommendations you've had.

BigLittleOwl · 17/03/2023 13:16

Another vote for Epson ecotank. Big upfront cost but I didn’t replace the ink for 3 years and even then it only needed black. Never had a single issue with it. It’s downstairs away from our computers and prints wonderfully on wifi.

GordanoBenito · 17/03/2023 13:23

Word of warning - make sure you close your ink subscription account if you sell your HP.

I didn't use it for a couple of years so sold it on FB marketplace. The buyers were able to rack up over £50 of ink on my instant ink account and HP refused to refund me.

Serious lack of security.

I only sold the bloody thing for £20!

HurryShadow · 17/03/2023 13:53

We have an older equivalent of this Epson all in one printer and scanner. I bought it at the start of lockdown for if I needed to do any scanning while WFH as it has a feeder on top. The wireless printing works well and a full set of (non-Epson) compatible ink is about £16.

We don't use it very much (DH prints something once or twice a month) but we haven't bought ink since September 2021. It'll probably dry up before we use it up!

ProseccoLush · 17/03/2023 14:00

Another vote for the Epson Ecotank. We bought it for DD at Christmas as she is constantly printing photographs and research pictures (she is studying art and design at college) and it’s great. Hardly used any ink yet, really reliable over wi-fi and the print quality is fab.

MargaretThursday · 17/03/2023 14:03

We have an Epson ET-3750 where you buy bottles of ink and refill the cartridges. It was initially more expensive but much cheaper on ink.

Quisquam · 17/03/2023 14:04

I share your pain OP! My HP is temperamental and always dropping off the network! It stopped accepting compatible ink cartridges and I won’t be buying another HP printer ever again!

Dodgeitornot · 17/03/2023 14:04

Oh I love mind! We have the cheapest monthly subscription to ink. It's great.

Wolvesandcacti · 17/03/2023 14:07

I have one of these and it’s yet another ridiculous subscription model. Needy is an excellent description. Bloody network connection issues too.

I also have a refillable HP ink one which is great. Just remember to use it regularly. Set a reminder to print a few things in colour and black and white in the first of each month!

Wolvesandcacti · 17/03/2023 14:09

Sorry my second one is an Epsom eco tank - great bit of kit. Lasted around 7 years so far

Laughingravy · 17/03/2023 14:14

I've never had problems with inkjets at work because they get used all the time but, though having colour printing was handy, I gave up on inkjets at home. Everyone gummed up eventually and the last one would burst into life in the middle of the night doing a 'scheduled' head clean. Unplugging it was the only way to stop that and wasting a load on ink while it did it. Still gummed up.
So I got a small Brother laser printer for £50 from Argos. The small toner cartridge lasted years - even longer when I got it to ignore the 'out of toner' message. I've just replaced both drum and cartridge for about £30 iirc and it works just fine. And it's happy to sit for weeks unused.

cocksstrideintheevening · 17/03/2023 14:14

If got a wifi hp and it is the bane of my life. Can't connect to the fucking thing, supposed to be on auto refill, have no ink, the thing needs to be smashed.

So, following with interest!

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 17/03/2023 14:15

My HP printer has been a pain for ages, constantly wanting new inks and even then printing pages that were unreadable. Drops wifi all the time, uninstalls itself ever few weeks particularly when I’m in a rush to print something.

So I bought an Epson ecotank just before Christmas, decided to finish up the HP inks and then swap to the Epson. The HP has behaved impeccably ever since, still haven’t swapped to the Epson 🙄.
