I hate my HP printer! Can you recommend have a different brand for use at home that isn't crazy expensive for ink ? I just want to be able to print and scan the occasional thing but my printer is SO needy!

We have not one but two HP printers
According to my DH they have just put a block on any generic ink cartridges which stops the printer working
IT's super temperamental when you're just trying to quickly print DC homework or something.
We had an HP ink subscription and when we had that somehow the ink was lasting ages and we didn't get as many cartridges as I am sure we were meant to but then when we stopped it, it seemed to need a new input twice a month or something.

Anyway I have had enough.
Apols for rant if you have read this far
Someone must have some thoughts on brother or someone else?
Thanks so much

I have an HP color laser MFP (multi function printer). It prints, scans and faxes. The inkjets are consumer grade. The laser printers are built for commercial use. It's about ten years old and has never given us the slightest bit of trouble. It's also really handy to have the scanning option.

mathanxiety · 17/03/2023 14:28

I have a big old Canon image class 1420. It prints and scans and its been going strong for years.

The ink is really cheap and the cartridges last forever. I buy generic. It only does black and white, but that's all I need.

I have a cheap Canon TS5100 series. The wireless printing has always worked fine from my Mac, iPad and iPhone where I always struggled with my HP printer (but that was from 2009).

Watching with interest. My HP likes to pretend it can't see my laptop so I have to reinstall every bloody time. Then it decides to do an ink test run before I'm allowed to print or scan anything. I've used more ink on the test runs than I have on actually printing something for me!

I know my printer is needy too as if I don't have enough needy people in my life without my appliances joining in. My Hoover is also very attention seeking constantly needing charging and emptying. All I need is my washing machine to join in.

We have one of these, a HP laser printer and a more expensive Canon inktank one (the cost of cartridges got stupid with school homework needing to be printed).

In the order of printers being arseholes when you need something printed it goes:
Canon inktank - best behaved
Canon old cartridge one - has odd delinquent moments but generally complies
HP laser printer - utter bastard with occasional outbreaks of printing.

Lavendersquare · 17/03/2023 15:50

As others have said I'd highly recommend the Epson Ecotank, I ditched our HP one due to excessively expensive cartridges ((£35 a time) bought an Epson Ecotank and have never looked back.

The Epson was more expensive initially but we bought it a year ago and are still using the same ink that it came with. It's changed printing for us, I no longer guard the printer and we happily use it whenever we need to.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 17/03/2023 16:01

We gave our Epson xp345 away as it seemed to drink ink and if one colour ran out it wouldn't even print in black.

We're now thinking of getting a replica Gutenberg Press, I know it will take some time setting up all the print blocks but I think it will be time well spent against the cost of ink.

Cherryblossoms85 · 17/03/2023 16:03

We have a Samsung laser printer and only use unbranded cartridges that last ages.

Minimummonday · 17/03/2023 16:05

I do hate my HP printer but their instant ink is only £1.99 a month so I deal with it.

LozzaChops101 · 17/03/2023 16:07

I have exactly the same problem as you OP. Never buying HP ever again. Nothing has made me as furious 🤣

chrispenrallt1 · 17/03/2023 16:13

I have a big old Brother printer. As long as it does not know you want to print something important it works fine. As soon as you have something that MUST be printed immediately it throws a tantrum. I now go up to it very calmly and nonchalant if I have anything pressing to print. I think out of all the things in my office it’s the printer that gets me screaming mad.

TinaYouFatLard · 17/03/2023 16:22

I hate my HP with a passion.

torquewench · 17/03/2023 16:26

Ugh I've got an HP and I HATE it.

Although it has improved somewhat now I've got a proper Virgin WiFi Pod rather than a generic WiFi extender and doesn't remember at 3 am that I've sent something to print at 6pm the night before ...

SleekMamma · 17/03/2023 16:31

Brother Lazer printer black & white. Never plays up. Perfect prints every time. I think it is cheaper overall compared to crappy ink jet nonsense.

FairIce · 17/03/2023 16:33

Printers are liars. Ignore pleas for ink until it starts to print blank sheets of paper.
Same with Sky remotes. Mine's been begging for batteries for over a year now.

PopGoesTheProsecco · 17/03/2023 16:38

I also hate my HP Deskjet. I had a Canon that lasted for around a decade, I always used generic ink cartridges with no problems. Recently it gave up the ghost so I bought an HP.

I very rarely print things - just homework for the kids really - but it's easily the worst printer I've ever had.

AuroraForever · 17/03/2023 16:38

Without a doubt Epson eco tank. Bought before lockdown and not yet had to refill the inks and I must print nearly a ream of paper a week. It came with two sets of all inks so it was a great purchase.

LozzaChops101 · 17/03/2023 19:15

What models of EcoTank are you all using? I’m online shopping right now while giving my HP the side-eye 🤣

LaurelGrove · 17/03/2023 19:21

I despise my printer. It now will only talk to one laptop, which is ancient and takes about half an hour to boot up. Then it may or may not print depending on whether Mercury is ascending and my neighbour has put her milk bottles out. It won't print in colour but it won't print in black and white unless all the cartridges are full. Because obvs you need fucking cyan to print a stupid form in black and white. It has mysterious error messages and if you look at it oddly it turns off completely.
My DC know that they can only ask for printing if I'm in an excessively good mood.

Zer · 17/03/2023 12:17

My Canon printer has been going for 10 years and I've used dupe cartridges for at least 6 of those. I am very fond of it.

Exactly same scenario here

neverendinglauaundry · 17/03/2023 19:34

All printers are dicks. Get a very part time job in an office so you can use the printer there

lmnabc · 17/03/2023 19:41

I've had a Brother for at about 15 years and it's never let me down. Not the cheapest cartridge s but not bad.

WinterMusings · 17/03/2023 19:49

This is an early morning after coffee type thread.

I have an Epsom that continually wants a new ink cartridge despite not actually printing anything and on the rare occasion it does print something it's shite quality 🤦🏻‍♀️
