We inherited a tiny butter knife with its own sheath

Not inherited obviously (not in the will) but DD saved it from a kitchen drawer of ‘stuff’. From DH’s Dad a couple of years ago. It’s not sentimental, it’s just so random. It has pride of place in the kitchen and is strangely amusing. Lay the table with it sometimes next to a proper sized fork for the unsuspecting teenager.

What other random items do you have that you love?

I have my gran’s pickle fork, it gets used at least weekly.

Fuckingfuckssake · 15/03/2023 23:13

I have my Gran's silver mustard spoon, it used to sit in a little blue glass jar, now my dd uses it to spoon her honey onto her breakfast (she gets a tiny bit in an eggcup so the spoon is just right)

NeonBoomerang · 15/03/2023 23:16

I bloody love that!

I love that op!
I've got a tiny brass beer barrel which unscrews at one end has about six teeny dice inside it. It was my Grandfathers. I think it came from Germany.

I have no idea what it's for.

Yahtzee for elves?

This is such a lovely thread!
Here are my kitchen treasures.
Dad’s baby mug, he was born in 1927, and Hornsea Pottery cups and saucers. I also have matching side plates that are tiny.

Until a few years ago I had my mum’s ancient Kenwood mixer that must have been at least 40 years old!

I've got my granny's fish knives and forks. And a battered old Quality Street tin from probably the 1970s that she used to keep the Kit Kats in!

IHateLegDay · 15/03/2023 23:45

I don't have them but when I was little, every time I went to my nan's house for dinner, she'd give me a spork instead of a fork because I thought it was really special! This thread has just reminded me of that 😊

TalliskerMcSpeculate · 15/03/2023 23:59

When my granny died we were asked if we wanted anything to remember her by. I chose her sugar bowl which is very heavy cut glass. It was just always part of her kitchen and when we were children we always rushed in to see if it was still there when we visited. It always was (until I snaffled it - my sibs still exclaim when they see it 40 years later)

Needhelp101 · 16/03/2023 00:04

Fab thread! I love little treasures.

I have a wooden backscratcher from Trinidad, which belonged to my ex-FIL. He unfortunately was a bit of a twat, but it's a damn good backscratcher.

AcrossthePond55 · 16/03/2023 00:04

A sterling silver carving fork with a handle made from the antler of a deer that was shot by DH's great-grandfather (or great- great-, DH doesn't remember).

Hummusanddipdip · 16/03/2023 00:14

I lovd these threads, sentimental items are so random, but the memories attatched make them beautiful.

I have my great nans Denby casserole dish. It's an ugly brown and beige colour, but the pattern is lovely. My nan used it, gave it to mum when she and dad bought their first home and my mum gave it to me when dh and I moved in together.

It's the perfect size for 2 people. So I think it will follow ds when he moves out (many years from now)

Underminer · 16/03/2023 00:45

After my Nan died, she didn’t have many possessions as she was quite minimal so we saved some of the bowls that she used to serve all the lovely desserts she used to bring out after she made us a Sunday roast. She loves giving us ice cream, crumbles, cake etc and these bowls mean a great deal to me even though she passed away 16 years ago.
i also still have her house key on my keyring. New owners changed the locks, but I have always had that key even though other ones have come and gone.

Notcreativeatall · 16/03/2023 02:20

we have an egg spoon - my grans i think - where the bowl bit is oval but on the side - supposedly for boiled eggs

Soniqueboom · 16/03/2023 02:59

When my DGM died the only items I wanted from her house were random kitchen bits Blush The fancy jelly mould my DGD used to make me orange jelly with mandarin pieces in, some tiny sherry glasses with horses on that she used to let me have a drop of sherry or drambuie in when I was far too young and her big mixing bowl that we used to make cakes together countless times. They all live in my cupboards now and I think about my DGP's every time I see them.

Mummyoflittledragon · 16/03/2023 03:53

Dh and I are collectors of random crap, especially dh. From the first house we rented together (house had been lived in by an old man, who died), 3 dead spiders in jars, a washing up bowl and a metal chamber pot. They’ve lived in 9 other houses and 3 other countries. I don’t want the spiders btw.. I have a hub cap from my first car, the number plates from one place we lived abroad and an ornament from when we went to a wedding in Central America. All bar the bowl (which I use for cleaning) hung up in the garage, dh uses the chamber pot for gardening.

As for anything sentimental. Unfortunately we were robbed and some pieces of sentimental jewellery were stolen. Other pieces were hidden elsewhere and not found. I have one of my grandma’s rings and a silver charm bracelet. I also have a bracelet my dad got me - he died when I was a child - and randomly the same grandma gave me a salad spinner, still in use 25 years on. Dh has his mum’s watch. We also have fruit spoons from my stepdad’s parents. We didn’t know them well at all but my stepdad was lovely.

SuperSange · 16/03/2023 05:52

I have my grams baking apron and a tablespoon that she uses for basting the roasties on Sunday. I use it daily and always think of her. Flowers

Oblomov23 · 16/03/2023 06:31

It's so sweet, I love it!

SpringIntoChaos · 16/03/2023 06:34

I have a teeny tiny silver spoon that I use for mustard (not sure if this was its original purpose but it's perfect for Colmans 🤣)

It was my dad's...when he died I found it in a 'box of stuff' in his wardrobe, next to a teeny tiny (very old!) book all about...mustard! No idea where it originated or why he kept it in a box, but I love it 🥰

Chateaudiaries · 16/03/2023 06:48

I have my nan’s silver plated tea strainer, she actually gave it to me when she was still alive and I left home for uni, because she couldn’t believe I was buying teabags BrewSmile

I now drink loose leaf tea in the afternoons but I use her tea strainer rarely because it seems quite delicate.

Trumpton · 16/03/2023 07:09

I have a teeny tiny button hook with a pearl handle. It belonged to DH’s G-Grandmother who was born about 1870.
My late MIL had some beautiful tiny Carltonware butter pat dishes and I remember the china butter knife that was with them but that has disappeared.( We are emptying her house at the moment and it’s definitely not there it was only about 5cms long)

newtowelsplease · 16/03/2023 08:07

This is a lovely thread!

We have my DH's grandma's old wooden handled cutlery that she wanted him to have for some reason. We don't use any of it apart from the grapefruit spoons.

I wonder if any of the experts on this thread can tell me what type of (very tarnished) fork this is? I pilfered it as a memento from one of my final formal dinners as an Oxford student but can't remember for the life of me what it's for. Could it be for a cheese course? It's been in my kitchen drawer for over 25 years and needs polishing

I should say, it's tiny. Here it is next to a proper fork for reference

This is the type of thread that should be in classics... a lovely heart-warming, honest thread that you could just re-read to soothe the soul and remember times gone by.

Yellowdays · 16/03/2023 08:24

We used to have a set of small silver coffee spoons with coffee beans at the end of the handle. One by one, we lost them as the children found them irresistible to play with.

Gazelda · 16/03/2023 08:39

I've got my nan's bun tin. It's battered and bashed, but I love to make cakes in it.
I've also got her set of bright yellow Tupperware mixing bowls. I grew up 'helping' her to cook with these in the early 70s.

So precious to me.
