We inherited a tiny butter knife with its own sheath

Not inherited obviously (not in the will) but DD saved it from a kitchen drawer of ‘stuff’. From DH’s Dad a couple of years ago. It’s not sentimental, it’s just so random. It has pride of place in the kitchen and is strangely amusing. Lay the table with it sometimes next to a proper sized fork for the unsuspecting teenager.

What other random items do you have that you love?

I’ve just remembered, I have a blue and white patterned pasta bowl (just one!) that my Dad bought for me from British Home Stores. Yes I’m that old.

I think it was from before pasta was invented in the UK, finding it now.

I have my Nan recipe book with all hand written recipes in, I've since added my own as well so can continue to pass it down.

I've got a sugar bowl I found clearing DGMs house that has tongs as part of the lid to pick up sugar cubes. I don't buy cubes so don't use it, but I find it pleasanty over-engineered and amusing Grin

I also have all my other (still alive) DGMs silver cutlery. It's mismatched and I've never seen it be used, but she was very proud of it and gave it to me as she 'didn't have the energy to polish it anymore, dear'. I think we both knew I wasn't the silver polishing kind, but she chose to ignore it...

Also, and this is naughty, she sent me home with some cake on a small plate and I stole it. I knew the moment she handed it to me that I was going to keep it. Because - it's one of the plates she used to cut around to get the right size pastry circle to make a pasty. She taught me to make pasties with one of those plates when I was so small I had to stand on a chair to reach the worktop. I have never found another plate the right size.

I have my grandma's gardening book where she made notes in the margin. She didn't write a lot, she wasn't confident in it, she left school at 12 and was a bit embarrassed about her handwriting. But this was just for her to use so she wrote lots in it. I absolutely treasure it.

So is our tiny butter knife a fruit knife then?

I’m not an expert, but I think fruit knives are more likely than butter knives to have their own cover. It’s very sweet!

Sorry but just perfect! Your last paragraph makes me feel very warm inside. Thanks all for these memories x

I could tell you about the time elderly MIL got stopped by security at London City Airport and got the fruit knife in her handbag confiscated...I was with her, it was mortifying but she was very aggrieved that they took her dear little knife away...

TheMadGardener · 15/03/2023 21:41

They let her keep the sheath though!

Didn’t she get it back? I always wonder whether you can reclaim things which get confiscated in this way.

They said they could arrange to post it back to her but by that time I'm afraid we'd been held up at security so long that we hustled her away still protesting to catch the plane!

We have a french lamb cutlet bone holder

I had to ask MN what it was for.

Never used it.

Littlefaeries · 15/03/2023 21:46

I’ve got mil’s fruit spoons. They are perfect for eating breakfast cereal.

Dh has a silver pocket watch on a long, v. heavy silver chain. It still works and has a tiny key to wind it up. It’s all dented because his great grandad was a blacksmith so it got knocked a lot.

Sarahcoggles · 15/03/2023 21:49

I've got lots of my Granny's kitchen appliances, including an electric mixer which still works. I think it's partly made of Bakelite !

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 15/03/2023 21:49

I have a pickle fork too! It belonged to my great granny.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 15/03/2023 21:50

We use solid silver cutlery every day. It has been in DHs family for a couple of generations but was always kept for best. It seems a bit decadent to use it for beans on toast or for a spoonful of peanut butter from the jar but it would otherwise sit in a box in the loft. DH is more domesticated than me and regularly polishes it.

I regularly use my Dad's wooden ruler. It's from before centimetres were invented but I'm old enough to be happy with inches (and have a plastic one for when cm are essential).

Trixiefirecracker · 15/03/2023 21:51

I have some Mexican spoons that have little cacti and assorted Mexican type decorations at the end. A sombrero and a donkey are other examples. They are silver and bought back by my grandmother on holiday many years ago before I was born. I love them.

JetBlackSteed · 15/03/2023 21:52

Until very recently I had two teeny tiny egg spoons that belonged to my granny. Now I can only find one. I suspect it has been teenagered and consigned to the bin with an empty yoghurt.

MrsJackRackham · 15/03/2023 21:55

I have my gran's spoon. It's a tablespoon measurement and was always referred to as The Spoon. I love it.

Baneofmyexistence · 15/03/2023 22:00

I have an egg timer that was my great nana’s. It’s in the loft but is similar to this one! I used to play with it when I was little.

I have 2 small handmade pottery figures that my grandparents were given as a wedding present in 1931. They are naked but a bit battered after being around a long time, the lady has lost a nipple and the man has lost his penis!

ODFOx · 15/03/2023 21:11

It is a fruit knife. What a nice thing to have kept 🙂

That’s what I thought. Butter knives are bigger, wider and blunt.

Agapornis · 15/03/2023 23:09

I have my dad's cutlery & crockery from when he was little - a fork, spoon, metal plate and metal little mug - all with a rabbit on them. I used them myself when I was little, nowadays they mostly live in the cupboard but the spoon is just right for dessert.
