Really impressed with the budget

I’ll give it to the chancellor. He delivered a bloody good budget today. Childcare reform (including increasing rates paid to providers by 30%) and 30 hours free for 1&2 year olds. Uk has avoided recession despite a global pandemic and Ukrainian war, more money on occupational health, plan to get more people into work

@Fullrecoveryispossible the phrase 'talks a good job' comes to mind.

I listened to the speech in full, first time for many years. What was noticeable in part was what was not said.

Is it not that earners need to have one parent who receives over 100k to not be eligible? ....

Yes exactly

GoodChat · 15/03/2023 15:29

@GotABeatForYouMama read my latest post if you want to @ me.

I wasn't looking for a 'gotcha'. I'm just in support of people who can work going to work if they don't live in a sustainable household.

For some people it seems that's a lot harder than others - I completely accept that.

People can be educated by these threads. We don't always see things that others have experienced without them being pointed out to us.

I just thought thank god Johnson, Truss and their cronies aren’t anywhere near the front bench. Let’s not forget Truss(who was supported by Johnson, as he knew she was batshit and thought he’d get back in) lost the country £50Billion! We’re all having to pay that back, so no wonder they’re was not that much in it for most people.

This in a nutshell!

I agree but I'm slightly dismayed at the delays to the childcare funding - you would have to conceive at Christmas 2024 (21 months away) to benefit from the 30 hours funding from 9 months Sad

Doesn't help those who are pregnant or currently paying £££££ in childcare NOW.

And then we may have a different government so no guarantees it will be kept

30 hours free for 1&2 year olds

for some 1&2 year olds. Higher earners don’t get anything.

Why should they?

BernadetteIsMySister · 15/03/2023 13:40

Certainly a vote winner isn't it!

SURPRISE!

Mel146 · 15/03/2023 15:31

I've never been a Tory supporter but I definitely think the childcare support will be amazing for so many mothers and especially single mothers.

Ofcourse it cannot be rolled out straight away, they need time to prepare for sufficient places. I would have really benefitted if it was out now (expecting 2 under 2) but that's fine. I am glad many other women will benefit from this.

EarlofShrewsbury · 15/03/2023 15:20

Sounds to me like it's paving the way for being SAHM to be only something available to the rich.

30 hours free from 9 months. So it will be women getting sanctions unless they return to work full time when the child is 9 months?

It will never be cheaper to pay for outsourced childcare than it would be to enable women to raise their own children.

Time to get a job!

picklemewalnuts · 15/03/2023 15:32

I'm not really sure why you'd expect to 'get' anything out of the budget, in these really straightened times, when you are already doing really well?

ShirleyPhallus · 15/03/2023 15:33

luckylavender · 15/03/2023 15:31

Why should they?

That’s not what I was debating. I was correcting the statement which was incorrect.

ColdHandsHotHead · 15/03/2023 15:31

SURPRISE!

Isn’t it better than being ignored as the group whose votes are wanted though?

I mean women will benefit, no bad thing surely

My apologies GoodChat. I have just read your further post and I agree my comment was harsh.

BramleyAppleHotCrossBun · 15/03/2023 13:43

lol

It has 'given' my family, and thousands like us, absolutely nothing.

Not everyone has children under 5.

This. Just more bills to pay from our taxes and so setting up the inevitable tax rise for those of us that are contributors to the state. Blah fucking Tory blah.

Babyroobs · 15/03/2023 15:36

Does anyone else think this could actually work the opposite way and working women could start looking to reduce hours now they are getting more help with childcare ? Let's face it if you have a couple of small kids and are getting 30 hours paid term time ( so around 24 hours average weekly ) you could drop to working 3 days a week, get it all paid for and think why bother working full time? let's face it working full time with little kids is a bloody slog that not many would choose to do.

User135644 · 15/03/2023 15:37

All is forgiven. Tory mania is back.

RainyDays8 · 15/03/2023 15:37

Not a single thing in it for me. In fact I am going to be worse off, thanks to the freeze in income tax thresholds. Cheers pal.

Any danger of reasonable funding for the education, health, police and justice systems? Or are we still going to have to deal with falling down schools, hospitals, courts and prisons?

Oink flap, oink flap, oink flap, oink flap, oink flap………..

Quveas · 15/03/2023 15:38

Hmmm. Spot the Tory contest here I see. Either that or I've slipped through a gao in the space/time continuum to a country not beset by many problems that won't be solved by a bit of extra childcare and more £millions in your pension pot.

Pension boosts for the wealthy and sanctions for the sick and disabled.

Classic tory budget.

Yes, and BJ due to be questioned by the parliamentary standards committee. Any one like to guess how that one will go?

GoodChat · 15/03/2023 15:40

Thanks @GotABeatForYouMama

I know Mumsnet can be a bit wild sometimes so it's really easy to see a comment and get frustrated by it. Often when a point is made on here whoever makes it will fiercely stick to their guns so i appreciate that Smile

MrsSamR · 15/03/2023 14:54

@EmGB87 exactly this!

My husband is a high earner (over £100k) but I am on a much lower salary and work part-time to reduce our childcare costs.

Because of the way we do our finances I pay for childcare and my husband for everything else (mortgage/bills etc). When my second DD starts nursery in October the combined costs as we only qualify for 15 hours for my eldest will be more than I earn so he will be supplementing to cover our childcare bill.

His salary is over £100k but his take home is nothing like that as he is taxed so heavily on his earnings and the cost of living is still obviously affecting us. The misconception that people on 6 figure salaries are living in mansions and driving sports cars is completely inaccurate. We live in a modest 3-bed semi in the SW (mortgaged) and share a car between us.

To have once again been overlooked for help with childcare costs is disappointing especially as a family with 2 parents on £99k each would qualify while we don't. It needs addressing properly.

Our household doesn't earn anywhere near that but what you say does make perfect sense as it will inevitably be yourself who will suffer from the extra charges. The limit should be based on a combined amount really.
