Really impressed with the budget

I’ll give it to the chancellor. He delivered a bloody good budget today. Childcare reform (including increasing rates paid to providers by 30%) and 30 hours free for 1&2 year olds. Uk has avoided recession despite a global pandemic and Ukrainian war, more money on occupational health, plan to get more people into work

@Awwlookatmybabyspider I would be if I got sacked for not adhering to the terms of my contract.

They can go to a library to look for jobs if they can't afford internet at home. They have to interact with their work coach and in the budget he said there'll be more support helping people find work, and they'll be sanctioned if they don't accept appropriate jobs. Granted, I don't know what is deemed as an appropriate job, but if your choices are to accept work and feed your children or don't and get sanctioned, you take the job.

There is a lot of litter to pick!

LizzieSiddal · 15/03/2023 15:12

I just thought thank god Johnson, Truss and their cronies aren’t anywhere near the front bench. Let’s not forget Truss(who was supported by Johnson, as he knew she was batshit and thought he’d get back in) lost the country £50Billion! We’re all having to pay that back, so no wonder they’re was not that much in it for most people.

Yoshithegreen · 15/03/2023 14:21

If you earn over 100k you don’t get any free hours but I struggle to see why high earns would need it? Over the age of three you still get 15 free hours

Because whilst my husband is a higher earner I am not. I want to work but I don't want to be working at a loss to our family finances. Childcare is incredibly expensive where I live. £90pd for a nursery place. £30pd for before and after school care. With one in nursery and two in after school club plus my £10 train ticket to get to work I am looking at £160 in expenses a day just to work.

Yoshithegreen · 15/03/2023 15:13

MrsSamR · 15/03/2023 14:54

@EmGB87 exactly this!

My husband is a high earner (over £100k) but I am on a much lower salary and work part-time to reduce our childcare costs.

Because of the way we do our finances I pay for childcare and my husband for everything else (mortgage/bills etc). When my second DD starts nursery in October the combined costs as we only qualify for 15 hours for my eldest will be more than I earn so he will be supplementing to cover our childcare bill.

His salary is over £100k but his take home is nothing like that as he is taxed so heavily on his earnings and the cost of living is still obviously affecting us. The misconception that people on 6 figure salaries are living in mansions and driving sports cars is completely inaccurate. We live in a modest 3-bed semi in the SW (mortgaged) and share a car between us.

To have once again been overlooked for help with childcare costs is disappointing especially as a family with 2 parents on £99k each would qualify while we don't. It needs addressing properly.

@MrsSamR @EmGB87 I’m sorry we will have to agree to disagree but I can’t feel sorry for anyone who earns over 100k not getting additional help with child care bills regardless if the household income is 100k or above and if it’s 1 or 2 parents income. It’s not a race to the bottom but I have to draw a line somewhere. I can’t believe you don’t think you’re in a privileged position that blows my mind the most.

NowAAT · 15/03/2023 15:13

OP raise your standards. If you think the budget is impressive then your standards are really low all around!

LizzieSiddal · 15/03/2023 15:14

And to add to my last post, we won’t forgot Johnson, Truss etc and the fact Sunack supported Johnson for many years.

We need a change of government at the next election.

Roundandnour · 15/03/2023 15:14

I was surprised that prepayments work out at less than £60 a year compared to DD.
They way people have mentioned this previously it always came across as 100’s a year.

Suppose I should be happy though. Will save that a year.

As for assessments as I’m getting PIP UC don’t do these anyway for those on LCWRA. During lock down UC badgered me every month to over to ESA, so glad I didn’t as I honestly couldn’t go through any more assessments.

However nervous as fuck about today’s announcement. Stigma around MH is harsh as it is, never mind having personality disorders. Don’t mention this on the health forms, employers find out later you didn’t disclose and that’s gross misconduct. MH team mentioned during my recent PIP renewal I continue to be a danger to myself and others. Who the duck would give me a job knowing this? Seriously? And that’s before time off for physical health and ongoing surgery with recovery times of several weeks each time.

What if they don't have a library in their local area and they can't afford the bus fare every day, which I imagine is a lot of money.

Well they can walk is probably going to be your reply. However if they're already undernourished due to severe hunger how the hell are they going to have the energy to walk 30 minutes there and back (for arguments sake)

I don’t think anyone expects you to “feel sorry” for high earners being excluded. But i do think it’s ok that those high earners feel a little put out at always having their taxes increased etc and never being on the receiving end of anything back.

What library? Aren't you assuming everyone lives within walking distance of one?

@Summerbreeze111

30 hour funding confirmed for children aged 9 months & up.

April 2024 - 2 year olds can access 15 hours

September 2024 - 15 hours for all kids from 9 months +

September 2025 - full 30 hours per week for all children over 9 months

So, only children conceived December 2024 onwards will get the full benefit of the 30 hours funding from 9 months. I'm also pregnant and dismayed at the delay of 18 months for under 2s Sad

How on earth can you be dismayed at this news?
You’ll still benefit from it! You obviously got pregnant knowing you’d have childcare to pay so the lack of funding prior to this didn’t put you off conceiving. It is still a huge bonus to you during your child’s first 5 years.

EarlofShrewsbury · 15/03/2023 15:20

Sounds to me like it's paving the way for being SAHM to be only something available to the rich.

30 hours free from 9 months. So it will be women getting sanctions unless they return to work full time when the child is 9 months?

It will never be cheaper to pay for outsourced childcare than it would be to enable women to raise their own children.

GoodChat · 15/03/2023 15:22

I've always lived within walking distance of a library, to be fair. So yeah, maybe there are some issues with that - but isn't that the same issue as them travelling to a job centre etc? Aren't there schemes in place for that?

I know you used to get free bus travel if you were on employment support benefits and were going to a job interview but I honestly don't know the ins and outs.

I would say most people live within distance of places with internet, whether that is a library or a friend or relative but I don't know what the answer is for people who don't.

SheilaFentiman · 15/03/2023 15:23

“It will never be cheaper to pay for outsourced childcare than it would be to enable women to raise their own children.”

err, what now? Baby ratios are 3:1, there aren’t many SAHPs taking care of triplets.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/03/2023 15:23

The ironic thing is though if all these "lay about" claimants don't get off their fat butts and go and get a job that pays 2,000 per week then there'd be no need for DWP staff and work coaches so they'd be out of a job.

The nearest library here is 15 miles away. There is no direct bus route and the buses only run 3 times per day each way to the small town (which doesn't have a library). The total cost for this 5 hour 4 bus round trip is £28. "Go to the library" is not the "gotcha" answer you seem to think it is.

useless GIF

Useless.

justpoppingtotheshops · 15/03/2023 15:25

Those expecting 30 hours to be given from April 5th 2023 were naïve at best

It was always going to be cascaded down age groups

No legal requirement for childcare providers to even give funded places will just lead to massive disappointment come September 2025 when parents want spaces (and have budgeted to get it) only to be told no.

JustAnotherUsey · 15/03/2023 15:26

I think it's great. Long term it will give women the opportunity to keep their careers and therefore contributing to the economy. The gov have to pay out to provide it for free, but long term they will probably get more back by women being able to continue to work and not need to rely on universal credits.

I would say that it might well end up a system where people being less likely to qualify for universal credits if they choose to not go back to work. That would probably be a choice and families would have to be able to afford on one salary.

Thelnebriati · 15/03/2023 15:27

Not great for disabled people. It looks like PIP is going to be the new standard for who qualifies as disabled.

30 hours free for 1&2 year olds

for some 1&2 year olds. Higher earners don’t get anything.

Is it not that earners need to have one parent who receives over 100k to not be eligible? ....

Exactly.

Brokendaughter · 15/03/2023 15:28

Well, my response was to go look at the live price of gold.

Budget started at 12.30.
At 12.57, the price for a troy oz of gold went over £1600 for the first time in history & it's still bouncing around £1597 now.

Guess it's not just me who doesn't trust their money in the UK economy.
