Really impressed with the budget

I’ll give it to the chancellor. He delivered a bloody good budget today. Childcare reform (including increasing rates paid to providers by 30%) and 30 hours free for 1&2 year olds. Uk has avoided recession despite a global pandemic and Ukrainian war, more money on occupational health, plan to get more people into work

"Free" childcare only works if the providers can survive and actually pay their staff - many can't. Proper funding for the sector is sadly absent.

As a 55 year old self employed mother of two young adults the budget has done nothing for me, and in fact as a family we are massively worse off all round compared to say 10 years ago thanks to the tories.

alwaysoutdoors · 15/03/2023 21:12

The childcare isn't 'free'. It is at great expense to childcare providers and will cause the inevitable closure of many high quality settings.

I wouldn’t vote for that smug, arrogant, racist, crap uncaring government for a million quid.

Useless bunch of rich gits.

Weren’t you leaving mn for nicer climes

Maybe it was someone else I said good luck to

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/03/2023 21:23

Yeah, l kind of came back though!😁

MojoDaysxx · 15/03/2023 21:33

Plus, the pension changes only benefit the richest people.

The current government would not get my vote even if they did get some things right - which they don’t or didn’t with this budget. I’m on Twitter reading the analysis of fiscalists, economists, actuaries and it’s not good… No matter how much they try to spin this! Imagine making an announcement like the 30h and then discovering that it would only kick in in 2025 ! Whilst they’re stealing on pensions! And increasing tax burden plus inflation which they haven’t managed at all, plus the scandalous levels of energy bills and the bloody mortgage increases which were all their bloody fault!
they have destroyed so much that they must be punished at the next general election and step aside for another party to take over.

Agree…all promises that they will not have to worry about because they will be out of office! People really do need to smell the coffee!

30 hours free for 1&2 year olds

for some 1&2 year olds. Higher earners don’t get anything.

I think high earners still get 15 hours?

ladykale · 15/03/2023 21:41

@YetMoreNewBeginnings

Its a tactic to lower the age people on benefits (women usually) will have full time work requirements or be sanctioned.

Why is this a bad thing though? The fact that many on benefits get free hours from a very young age because their children otherwise fall behind is unfair on those who work and have to pay for everything

CauliflowerBalti · 15/03/2023 21:48

They slashed all 4 tyres of your car then offered to replace 1, to rapturous applause.

NotNowBertie · 15/03/2023 22:03

They’ve given us sweet FA as always. Spent a lot of money on absolutely nothing. No child alive will benefit from the childcare. It won’t help parents now. Besides by the time in comes into place hopefully tories will be out & Labour will say it’s not financially viable. It’s infuriating, certain people who work part time get all childcare free & people who work full time get nothing.

people now claiming pension will not benefit from the changes. Only the top 1% of high earners will benefit.

I see a lot of promises for the future that hopefully does not contain the tories!

GoodChat · 15/03/2023 14:49

Did you miss the whole of the rest of the budget?

Fill me in on therest then...DH and I are medics in the NHS...so in theory will always benefit from a Tory goverment and budgets...but we have very deep seated working class roots and we decided a long time ago that we would not do private practice. Again ther is nothing there for the NHS, education etc. The Tories are just filling in and trying to make good and you're all sucked in by it.
And do you know what...I'm just to bloody knackered to argue about it.

Some holiday club provision to enable me to work all year would have been nice. But can't have it all (we have none locally. They closed for covid and never reopened)

Don't like the overall "unemployed women are bad for the economy" vibes - I get what they're saying but I'm worried about a new stigma for those who are struggling to find employment.

I'm actively seeking work (I love working!) but days go by without a suitable role to apply for. When there is a role to apply for there's 300 applicants!

(I know, it's a regional thing!)

This is the issue. What do you deem suitable?

A job is a job. Take a shit one until you get one you deem suitable

If you want to work there is jobs

Superb analogy.

Lindyloomillion1 · 15/03/2023 22:17

The budget is neither here nor there. The Tory party have blown it all after well over a decade in power. They haven't done anything about social care funding promised earlier and all these promises are fairy dust. They won't get in next election unless the whole country has mass amnesia.

Yes, far better to just leave the poor kids to get more behind and let schools sort it out…

and it’s not from “a very young age”. It’s 15 hours 38 weeks a year from a slightly younger age.

You beat me to it...they put a few quid in peoples pockets and all is forgiven.
Nobody looks at the bigger picture .

It’s from 2 years old. Working parents get free hours at 3 years old. So someone who works 16 hours per week pretty much gets their entire childcare funded where as working people get it tax free if they meet the criteria.

So many are, unfortunately. Cheap way to do politics.

Lovely13 · 15/03/2023 23:25

It is Tory talk. We will look after ourselves. The rest of you..hell and a handcart etc. They are not looking after the country, just their own elite selves. Look at the Johnson crew. Sad so many fell for his shtick. And still do.
