Spenny? 😖 Bargs?! 😤

And other terms that (probably irrationally) irritate the hell out of you.

These are my two. I think spenny just takes the edge for me. I've heard it so many times, just today!

Fully expecting to be told I need new things to be irritated by etc, but this is only supposed to be lighthearted.

What are yours?

To me Spenny is a small town in County Durham called Spennymoor.

I was thinking the very same thing!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 14/03/2023 23:17

It's SPENDY, surely? It's IS spendy, people are just mistaken being a bit thick!

They say spenny. I have good hearing.

tobee · 15/03/2023 01:06

I've had enough of "and I'm here for it" now. Although I probably use it myself occasionally Blush

CuriousMama · 15/03/2023 01:11

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor there you go thicko

Bare

My daughters boyfriend said he didn't like Christmas as "bare people come round". I said what? As in naked? Or dressed as bears? No, it means "lots of" apparently 🙄

Howling at your reply, I would have said the same 😂

Hop27 · 15/03/2023 01:52

Move to Australia....their ability to shorten names is next level.
During the apocalyptic bush fires the news we're reporting on the tireless work of the 'Fiery's' and 'Ambo's'

Rinkydinkydoodle · 15/03/2023 01:54

Platty Joobs made me laugh, Cozzy Lives is also good but but what’s the coronation going to be called? DS re-named Statey Funes the Boohoobilee for a bit but he’s drawn a blank so far for Corny Whatever.

the one that annoys me is when people breathlessly describe something (often quite uninspiring) as ‘everything’ ie. ‘ the film was everything.’ So pick some adjectives then!

dudsville · 15/03/2023 03:06

Slang is very particular and I don't often use it. I even still experience a bit of angst when the most appropriate response seems to be "no worries, mate", I'm not Australian, and I'm not a pirate, but sometimes that response seems to be the most friendly one.

CatchHimDerry · 15/03/2023 03:14

I just find them all so funny.

Platty joobs and cozzie livs are two of my faves

Wouldn’t use slang as such, too old for that!

To the poster that thought “bare” was bad, wait till you hear the likes of “bare P” (lot of money), “it’s gucci”, in place of “it’s cool”, “fairs” etc. I have a quite a bit younger brother and some younguns in our friend group, they baffle me when I hear a new word. There’s prob load more recent ones I haven’t heard yet!

QwertyBert · 15/03/2023 04:14

Oh lots of these get used in the WhatsApp group chat with the ‘girls’ but as we’re all women approaching 40, it’s tongue in cheek.

I tend to use ‘nervy b’ to friends to signify I’m having a stress but not an actual mental health crisis (which I have done previously!!)

WandaWonder · 15/03/2023 04:15

For a boy or girl?

For a boy or girl?

That was exactly my thought when I saw the thread title 🤣

PyongyangKipperbang · 15/03/2023 04:33

I bet there are loads of Spenny's in schools! Lads ime are not original thinkers when it comes to nicknames so if their surnames are Spencer I can well imagine it!

Champagneforeveryone · 15/03/2023 08:06

DS (in his first year at uni and loving city life) refers to the Elizabeth Line as "the lizzy line"

I'm not sure what it is that makes me so on edge about it, but apart from anything else it seems a little disrespectful. Anyway we are visiting him later today and due to the tube strike we will be taking The Elizabeth Line 😉

My daughter used to call M&S Marks and 'Spensives.

Or Marksies. That one drives me to rage. 🤬

MustardChair · 15/03/2023 08:24

i hate 'spends' as in the money people have to take on holiday. 'I'll have this much as spends'.

I also hate 'bloods'. I am not from here and we use 'blood' as the singular and plural. Bloods is perfectly appropriate but it is like nails down a blackboard for me.

Leccy also.

And my mother uses biccy instead of biscuit and 'bubs' instead of baby. As in 'Dierdre has just had her bubs'. [shudder shudder]

Chersfrozenface · 15/03/2023 08:25

I've called the purple one the Lizzie Line since it was changed from Crossrail and I don't even live in London (do visit though ... or tho).

My favourite contender for the royal do in May is Chazzy Cozzy.

ohitscold · 15/03/2023 08:30

Not quite the same but I honestly hate when people find a bargain and say "run don't walk

neverendinglauaundry · 15/03/2023 08:34

😂 I clicked because I thought these were baby name ideas.

Bare has been around a long time, it was London primary school slang for very in the early 2000s. I'd always assumed very --vere-bare

PrincessHoneysuckle · 15/03/2023 08:41

@ThisIsntDanicaBritannica never heard of Ponte Carlo just Ponty.Im from Doncaster and we call it Donny and the prison Doncatraz Grin its interesting that its called different by different people

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 15/03/2023 08:52

Never heard either of these... but feel your pain.

PetitPorpoise · 15/03/2023 08:52
