And other terms that (probably irrationally) irritate the hell out of you.

These are my two. I think spenny just takes the edge for me. I've heard it so many times, just today!

Fully expecting to be told I need new things to be irritated by etc, but this is only supposed to be lighthearted.

What are yours?

OP posts:
SpringIntoChaos · 14/03/2023 16:20

Literally never heard either of these terms 🤷‍♀️

CuriousMama · 14/03/2023 16:26

PyongyangKipperbang · 14/03/2023 15:28

BArgs would have me killing people.

I think it was sheer luck that I didnt end up being sent down for mass murder around the Platinum Jubilee.........

Platy jubes was fab 🤣

Ds1 is 25 and started saying spenny. A lot. He's intelligent too.

Perfect annoys me. Said by hospitality workers etc. Super used to be around a lot. Put in front of everything!

Mnl321 · 14/03/2023 16:35

I was born for this thread!

Wine/gin o’clock, cuppa & biccies, job done, picky tea, chippie tea, chin chin..

I have so many, I’ll have to shh cos I’m at risk of sounding a miserable twat 😌😌

MissDollyMix · 14/03/2023 16:37

Is spenny a northern thing? I’ve heard it for years, it’s not a new thing.

BitOutOfPractice · 14/03/2023 16:38

Whichwhatnow · 14/03/2023 16:14

I use spenny (and cozzie livs, and holibobs, and various others along the same lines) but ONLY when talking to my sister in order to irritate her (she also does this to me).

I shall add 'bargs' to my repertoire and follow this thread... for 'inspo' 😝

I like your style. My sister and I often Italianise words to annoy our offspring.

eg I have brought a selezione of food to eat on the terrazzo.

we enjoy it immensely.

gogohmm · 14/03/2023 16:43

Dd2 says it all the time, annoys me!

BertieBotts · 14/03/2023 16:53

Platty Joobs amused me how much it annoyed people.

I bare love "bare".

DurhamDurham · 14/03/2023 17:02

Never heard of those terms.
Another one who thought of Spenny as the place in County Durham.

I hear people saying spendy quite a bit. Don't mind it so much.

Holibobs gives me the absolute rage Grin

AffIt · 14/03/2023 17:05

Casilero · 14/03/2023 14:55

Bare

My daughters boyfriend said he didn't like Christmas as "bare people come round". I said what? As in naked? Or dressed as bears? No, it means "lots of" apparently 🙄

😂😂😂

I love Christmas anyway, but I think I would enjoy it even more if people came round dressed as bears...

GMOOH2023 · 14/03/2023 17:06

My daughter used to call M&S Marks and 'Spensives.

Marmite27 · 14/03/2023 17:08

RampantIvy · 14/03/2023 15:31

Never heard of spenny or bargs before.

People I work with call Wakefield Wakey.

Well that’s because it is Wakey, also see Ponty and Cas.

(Wakefield, Pontefract, Castleford)

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 14/03/2023 17:11

Ah, this thread give me joy and hope for the future of MN

You people are my crewdem.

RockaLock · 14/03/2023 17:18

Prolly is my least favourite at the moment.

Closely followed by everything else mentioned already!

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 14/03/2023 17:20

@Marmite27 @RampantIvy I agree. It's Wakey, Ponte and Cas. I draw the line at Shakey Wakey though. I work Wakefield so hear it a lot.

CuriousMama · 14/03/2023 17:24

Aww lovely

PetitPorpoise · 14/03/2023 17:32

I don't mind things like Platty Jubes because I think generally it's said in a knowingly tongue in cheek way, and sort of pokes fun at it.

I'm not as much of a fan of the others but slang has always come and gone. I'm more bothered about grammar that makes no sense, like "should of".

MisgenderedSwan · 14/03/2023 17:33

My friend and I text each other about our 'menty b's'

It's all a bit of fun. I spend all day embroiled in legal and formal language, I don't need to exhibit my skills in text messages to my friends 😆

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 14/03/2023 17:34

@MisgenderedSwan me and my mates say ‘nervy b’.

DisforDarkChocolate · 14/03/2023 17:36

I've never heard of either.

Spenny would be short for Spennymoor to me so I was very confused.

ThisIsntDanicaBritannica · 14/03/2023 17:36

A bit local, but still...
Ponte Carlo - Pontefract
Doncatraz - Doncaster / Doncaster prison
Shakey Wakey - Wakefield
Cas Vegas - Castleford

Not quite on the same level as Platty Jubes, though.

Gatekeeper · 14/03/2023 17:37

Im from Spennymoor so tis has confused me

KillingLoneliness · 14/03/2023 17:41

Where in the UK do they use spenny and bargs!? I’ve never heard these being said before!

I grew up in Essex so there was always plenty of slang words being thrown around but I never picked any of them up, my daughter started to say “Slay” as her friends use that term a lot but luckily it only lasted a couple of weeks!

OrchidOrchard · 14/03/2023 17:49

Love Ponte Carlo!!

I’ve heard spenny and spendy. Spenny from the cool DS22 and spendy from an older 30 something

catherinecawoodrtd · 14/03/2023 17:51

I'm impressed with how many people have heard of Spennymoor! I'm even more impressed I don't live there anymore haha!
