London - Coronation Weekend

Trying to find a date to have a weekend break in London.

Would coronation weekend be impossibly busy every where, or just around Buckingham Palace/The Mall?

I actually don't think the museums and other attractions will be significantly more crowded. Visitors mostly go for the coronation events, and Londoners tend to stay in due to thinking everywhere will be too crowded with tourists. But it will be hard to get anywhere due to road closures and packed public transport.

Yeah, I guess that's the thing - it's all very well me trying to avoid the route etc, but it's getting from place to place that will be the issue.

My instant thought was 'no, absolutely not' then I went to 'hmmm, could work' and now I'm firmly at 'can't be arsed to look in to what routes I could take to attempt to avoid the crowds'

When I originally looked one hotel (which is in Westminster tbf) was triple what we paid last year. So I googled London 5th may as I was confused as to why it would have jumped up so much, and all that came up was a boney m gig. Which is great, but not triple the cost of a hotel room great 🤣

Omg I literally couldn't think of a worse weekend to pick for all the reasons outlined, it will be insane

It’s a bank holiday weekend so everything would be busier than normal anyway, even without coronation.

GandhiDeclaredWarOnYou · 14/03/2023 15:04

Public transport will be rammed to bursting. Ditto restaurants and cafés. Also the journey down.

I really wouldn’t, but you do you.

I don't think London was at all difficult / busy around the Queen's funeral other than around areas that were affected. If you want to stay in somewhere like Soho, Shoreditch, south of the river and avoid about a mile radius around buckingham palace, you'll be absolutely fine.

whynotwhatknot · 14/03/2023 18:56

i would try and avoid westminster if youve found a good price then fine but just go elsewhere the saturday at least maybe camden or shoreditch way

whynotwhatknot · 14/03/2023 18:58

tubes will still run as normal unless thney call a strike of course

Roundandnour · 14/03/2023 20:40

Haha Shoreditch won’t be quiet.
it never is at the weekend and even less so on a bank holiday weekend. Traffic will be heaving as ever due to Old Street construction.

And is Camden ever quiet at the weekend?

bps · 14/03/2023 23:24

@Roundandnour that's different from coronation area crowdedness – obviously London is busy in general but I assume that's the reason they're visiting in the first place, otherwise they'd be going for a spot of peace and quiet in the lake district
