So what DO rich people wear? (Lighthearted)

Was just chatting with a friend and she was talking about how truly wealthy people don’t wear labels but just wear “quality”.
So no designer etc.
but when I asked her what they actually wear then, are there secret “rich people” brands she couldn’t answer? Just said vaguely you know, quality expensive stuff?

so I’m curious, what do they wear? If I wanted to pretend to be a rich person for a day and look “expensive” in an understated day where would I find my clothes?

lighthearted because obviously just a bit of fun and I’m too tired to dress up as me let alone a rich person today, I’m in sweatpants 😂

They wear labels just like everyone else. Just maybe different ones.

For the ultimate 'stealth wealth' look Loro Piana or Gabriella Hearst.

HotWaterBottleAndABook · 11/03/2023 17:20

I wondered about this.I wonder where rich people get their knitted jumpers that look so neat (not cashmere and the like).

evtheria · 11/03/2023 17:20

In my imagination it's stuff like Loro Piana and the Row, but tbh I don't think wealthy people are wearing layers of cashmere robes on a standard day.

Sunspel t-shirts?

Designer clothes but without logos or branding.

HMTheQueenMuffin · 11/03/2023 17:22

My BFF is a multi millionaire (properties and investments) and I complimented her on her red shoes the other day. She proudly told me they were from Sainsburys.

Mostly though she wears jeggings and a long sleeved tshirt.

Embelline · 11/03/2023 17:22

@AnnaMagnani love the phrase “stealth wealth” so much

Depends how you define rich. Beyoncé is extremely rich, so is Kylie, so is Deborah Meaden. They all wear completely different clothes - don’t think it’s a one stop shop for rich people!

This is so true! I always laugh when people buy designer bags/shoes/clothes it essentially says to the world i’m trying to look rich but i’m actually not.

declutteringmymind · 11/03/2023 17:24

There are so many boutique brands that ooze quality and style. Just hang out in nice places. I went to Megève recently and the brands out there were unheard of but stunning.

Embelline · 11/03/2023 17:26

we were talking about non glitzy dressing. So less celeb wear I guess and more every day wear for the non famous wealthy?

I once read that they always look well put together because, very often, their clothes are generally brand new or very new. No signs of wear or washing on top quality fabrics! New white t shirts, fresh socks and crisp shirts - box fresh trainers and no bobbles knitwear!!!

No logos, no branding. Simple design from high end, discreet labels.

As the saying goes - money talks, wealth whispers...

BeachBlondey · 11/03/2023 17:36

I could afford expensive clothes, but I think designer labels are all a massive rip off. How on earth can a T-shirt be worth £100, or shoes worth £1000? I just stick with what feels "normal" to me, like Next or George. I have recently discovered the joy of charity shops! So many beautiful clothes for £2 or £5. I like the idea of recycling.

My parents knew a very rich family back in the 80's/90's - multi millionaires - and they were the scruffiest bunch going. They didn't dress up for going on holiday, like we did, because to them it was no big deal, whereas for us it was THE annual event. We would have our "aeroplane outfit" LOL.

EsmaCannonball · 11/03/2023 17:37

I always feel a bit envious when I read things like Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man and see all the tales of travelling to London and having boots and shirts and jackets made for you.

A friend is from a rich family, not aristocracy but I guess what once would have been called landed gentry. She married a man from a rich American family and her in-laws are rather aghast that people in her family like nothing more than finding a bargain in a charity shop and would openly boast of wearing a cashmere jumper that they found for £2.

I do find it interesting that what would be considered shabby and scruffy in a poor person is taken as a sign of charm and eccentricity and lack of materialism in a rich person.

Cherryana · 11/03/2023 17:41

The MC 40 ish women I know:

Fairfax and favour (spelling?)
Dubarry (spelling?)
Cefinn and Wyse dresses
Cashmere jumpers
Vega trainers
Lots of horrible and tasteless designer clothes that look so expensive but remind me again that money doesn’t buy style

My closest friend who has tons of money doesn’t care about fashion at all and probably wears a lot of Sainsbury’s but then she has these £400 boots for walking the dog and that’s when you know!!

same! i could pay but i’d feel like a gullible tw*t for doing so. Pay 1000s for shoes cause they have a badge on them? Nope, literally falling into their hands. I wear mostly M&S/next/sometimes sainsburys and am proud of being secure enough to do so!😄

Sweetwindinmyhead · 11/03/2023 17:49

I don’t know about labels but I think the rich are quite well groomed. Silky hair, good skin. Although I am only using London rich as an example. I don’t know about home county rich.

mackthepony · 11/03/2023 17:56

Being slim helps

allswellthatends · 11/03/2023 17:58

Actually agree from experience that expensive clothes are not necessarily better than cheap supermarket brands. But it looks richer if you're wearing natural fabrics and if your clothes fit, which for the record means rather larger than many people on the bus seem to believe... also, no pastels except possibly for weddings and garden parties. For day to day, jeans are jeans are jeans really, and same for puffer jackets and t-shirts

Portillo · 11/03/2023 18:00

What do you mean by rich?

AnnaMagnani · 11/03/2023 18:01

Having parked in the UK's most expensive street, I discovered you actually can tell the difference between an expensive puffer jacket and a cheap one.

Not quite sure what it was - it wasn't the labels - but there was something.

Octopusmittens · 11/03/2023 18:04

Our friends own amongst other things one of the most famous castles in Britain. Their style is genuinely old cashmere jumpers covered in dog hair.

AnnaMagnani · 11/03/2023 18:07

By rich, I do not mean middle class people wearing Fairfax and Favour.

More people living in £10million+ properties in Kensington. With that being just one of their homes.

JackieDaws · 11/03/2023 18:08

Yes they may well dress in shabby old cashmere during the day but they will not be wearing it for dinner parties and events that you're not invited to.

Suzi888 · 11/03/2023 18:11

I would have thought fabric material so probably real furs 🤢 … silk, lace, luxury fabrics, well cut/tailored to your exact measurements. Rather than a brand.

Casilero · 11/03/2023 18:16

My mum has a friend who is seriously rich. Hundreds of millions rich. She absolutely loves a bargain though - buys her food from Morrisons and seems to shop in TK Maxx a lot. But then she'll spend over a hundred grand on her car, has multiple properties, beautiful villa with a super car over there too, and big diamond jewellery. She does look rich to be fair, very well groomed and slim.
