I was okay yesterday last night in bed my left side of the throat starting hurting and it’s really painful when I swallow something I also have a bit of earache and swollen lymph node. I cant get a ap appointment and cant get through to NHS 111 any advice? I really don’t want to go to AE unnecessarily but it really hurts when I swallow 😩😩

Christ, do people really call the Drs/111 for a sore throat?

Just rest and take some paracetamol and fluids. You'll be fine.

NetballMumGrrr · 11/03/2023 11:16

A single trip to A&E costs the NHS over £400 (before any specialist treatment) if you had to fork out from your own pocket would you?

A sore throat a fucking joke.

NishaaS123 · 11/03/2023 11:17

Let me just repeat and I said it in the original post I AM NOT GOING TO THE A&E.

See how you go today/tomorrow. If still bad ring GP if eat infection you'll need antibiotics

Ear*

HedwigIsMyDemon · 11/03/2023 11:25

Even if it’s an ear infection you don’t need a GP appointment - it’s an entirely self limiting condition that will get better by itself. No antibiotics needed unless it’s been days with no improvement.

Well don’t ask then if you don’t like the answers!

KILM · 11/03/2023 11:29

Just an FYI, even if you do have white nodules on your throat GPs don't tend to give antibiotics out unless you are otherwise compromised long term health wise.

If she has an ear infection she'll get antibiotics

MirabelMax · 11/03/2023 11:30

Even if it is an ear infection your body may well fight it off without needing to see a gp. Instead of googling I'd use the NHS site to get advice on symptoms. My dd gets earache regularly and I follow the advice on there. We generally only go to the gp if it hasn't eased after 5 days or so. Most infections are viral and antibiotics won't help.

I would also recommend ibuprofen for a sore throat as it helps bring down swelling.

SmileyClare · 11/03/2023 11:31

I hope you feel better soon op.

Remember even if you have an ear or throat infection: your body can fight that off.
I think you’ll be ok to wait until Monday for antibiotics (if no better)

If you can face going out, ask a pharmacist. They can suggest over the counter treatments x

Snoken · 11/03/2023 11:31

I agree with the others, you are probably just at the early stages of a bad cold. Wait 3-4 days and if it's not started to get better seek medical advice.

whowhatwerewhy · 11/03/2023 11:31

Do people seriously automatically try to book appointments with a sore throat ear after less than a day 🤷‍♀️. Paracetamol, lots of fluids and bed if you feel the need.

fairgame84 · 11/03/2023 11:33

Stuff like this is what pharmacies are good at. Saves you waiting hours for 111. If it needs a dr the pharmacist will tell you.

If this is representative of the general public, it’s genuinely no wonder people struggle to get appointments or wait for 7 hours in A&E.

No doubt an unpopular view but they should charge a fee for appointments or A&E attendances for things that can be easily remedied over the counter like this.

summerisnearlyhere · 11/03/2023 11:36

As other replies say, please do not call 111 for a sore throat. Leave that for people who are actually very sick. If you your symptoms dramatically change then obviously call them, but paracetamol and ibuprofen and lots of fluids are the way to go. And for goodness sake stay off google! Hope you feel better soon Flowers

Chihuahuasrule · 11/03/2023 11:38

Pain from the back of the throat radiates to the ear.

Take pain killers, difflam spray. If you develop big white spots on your tonsils call 111 again as may need antibiotics

AndTheSurveySays · 11/03/2023 11:38

There was a thread the other week where a poster was asking if they should phone an ambulance because they had the shits for a day.

Last time I had tonsillitis (I didn't know it at the time) the pharmacist didn't want to look down my throat!

A lot of the stuff online is worrying, even from reputable sites. I've got a problem with my knee so I used the symptom checker on the Babylon app and apparently needed to see a doctor within 6 hours. My knee has been hurting for about 6 weeks! I can quite see how someone with health anxiety would be scared after looking online.

NishaaS123 · 11/03/2023 11:47
