To wish Mumsnet would improve the way threads work

So often threads end up repeating themselves or others complain at posters who have not read page upon page of comments that they haven't done so.
It sometimes really stifles contributions and help for the OP.
I don't know what might make it better but a 'like' option might reduce the amount of comments a bit and show those which are most popular. What do people think ? What would you suggest could improve threads ?

It isn't a dinosaur. And it does work. HTH.

Viviennemary · 10/03/2023 18:16

I wouldn't mind a like button. It would be a good idea. But its been suggested before. Doesn't seem like it's going to happen. Perhaps it would mean less responses with folk just clicking on like.

Teeheeeheee · 10/03/2023 18:27

Some of us quite like dinosaurs. We can't all be/like the same things.

There are a thousand and one new breeds out on the www. that matches other people's interests.

It isn’t that long since MNHQ changed to a new server, and since then they can’t even change the software so you automatically get a capital letter at the start of a new paragraph (really basic formatting, imo) so I’d be surprised if they could easily introduce a ‘Like’ function.

@Guis23

People get moaned at as they haven't scrawled through all the posts ( understandably in some situations given the length).

But don't you see the irony/hypocrisy in that? Somebody can't be arsed to read everyone else's posts, but think they have something so insightful and unique (which almost certainly isn't if there are many more posts before the end) that they post expecting others to read theirs?

Judging from what others have said, the sheer length of some of them makes it almost impossible.
Sadly many people may well have something sensible to say to the original OP post. But they get lost. And true, people don't get to read them.
I don't believe it isn't a case of 'not being arsed' as you describe it, but simply not being practical sometimes. Some threads have hundreds of messages.

Some threads have hundreds of messages.

If you post on a thread that already has hundreds of messages, maybe just maybe your “sensible” point will have already been made by someone else. Probably days earlier. And if you haven’t got time to read through the thread or at least the OP’s posts, maybe you should just….. not post until you HAVE more time?

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/03/2023 19:19

But clearly if it has then many people keep raising it should tell Mumsnet something.

Newbs raise it, get told, wait six months, another newb raises it.

It's a bit like wanting fake grass and a big screen TV in a stately home. Because everywhere modern has them.

If there are hundreds of messages, it's very doubtful you're actually saying anything new or useful - most likely it's something that has been said many times - and actually the conversation has moved on (apart from the lazy "cancel the cheque" buggers who can't be arsed to read but think their point must be somehow unique). Generally the OP will have updated or things will have developed.

I don't see the value in 100s of people just answering the initial question.

GoodChat · 10/03/2023 19:33

If we get like and dislike buttons we should also get a 'don't be a dickhead' button. That's different from disliking something.

Exactly. If people didn’t post unless they’d at least read all the OP’s posts, threads would be a lot less cluttered & repetitive, & far easier for people to RTFT.

The only reaction button I'd want is "laugh" because sometimes it feels a bit too much just to post a laughing emoji, but not to respond seems criminal. 😀

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 11/03/2023 12:11

I use MN’s ‘laugh’ emoji all the time …

Yeah, I meant just to laugh on a post rather than having to post a post to laugh at a post 😂

But nah, I'm happy with the old dinosaur just the way it is really.
