To wish Mumsnet would improve the way threads work

So often threads end up repeating themselves or others complain at posters who have not read page upon page of comments that they haven't done so.
It sometimes really stifles contributions and help for the OP.
I don't know what might make it better but a 'like' option might reduce the amount of comments a bit and show those which are most popular. What do people think ? What would you suggest could improve threads ?

OP posts:
MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 09/03/2023 23:31

The simplicity is exactly what I like about MN. Reddit is too complicated, my brain can't follow it.
I like replies in chronological order so they make sense. Like a conversation. Yes they go on on a tangent, like real life. Not a problem.

Giveaschitt · 09/03/2023 23:33

RiverRock22 · 09/03/2023 20:41

Yes this would be good rather than just AIBU or AINBU

You realise there is more to MN than AIBU don't you? Plenty of places for people to post specific questions on particular topics or even just to have a chat...

LittleBearPad · 09/03/2023 23:43

This again?

No to voting buttons, no to nested threads.

GIFs are possibly a step too far Hmm

And just RTFT!!

gamerchick · 09/03/2023 19:54

We don't want a like button not do we want it to look like sodden reddit. Can't make head nor tail of the place personally. This has been done to death OP.

@gamerchick agree 100%

@Guis23 yep, it's been done a lot over the years, but the vast majority have not wanted thumbs or threads.

people just need to read the thread or don't bother posting. We'd all live without the opinions of those people that can't be arsed reading the thread. The waves of postings are ridiculous. If there are 700 posts, of course you're not the first person to ask the most obvious question or suggest the most obvious answer. At LEAST read the OP's posts!!

Ponderingwindow · 09/03/2023 23:53

I dearly hope mumsnet does not switch to a system of threaded comments or one where upvoted comments rise to the top of the stream. Putting the posts out of order makes it impossible to follow any logical flow of conversation.

what would be helpful is the ability to say, this is worthy of a side chat and to go start a new thread without it being called a TAAT. Just because a conversation is sparked by something that begins in an initial thread does not mean it is really about the initial thread if it is spun-off.

WinterMusings · 09/03/2023 23:54

OriginalUsername2 · 09/03/2023 19:47

I like the way Reddit does it. You can have conversations within the thread and it filters all the irrelevant posts down to the bottom. That would be amazing.

@OriginalUsername2 I disagree, totally. I don't want to have to follow a load of mini threads, I just want to read what everyone has to say as it is now!

if you like Reddit, then it seems logical to use Reddit & not try to change a different website to be the same as Reddit.

Turnipworkharder · 10/03/2023 00:00

Reddit is so confusing. 😕

WinterMusings · 10/03/2023 00:00

bellac11 · 09/03/2023 20:25

I find this quite an odd forum in that the posts arent numbered

People can put @username for example and reply to something that person said, but how on earth do you know what they were replying to without trawling tens of pages backwards to work out what the answer refers to

I liked the nested responses as it was easy to follow

I dont like that if I reply to a post, it takes me to MY post that Ive just written rather than back to the post that I replied to so that I can continue reading the rest of the thread. I might be 5 pages behind but I dont know how far to go back as I wont have known what page I was on when I wrote my reply

I find this website really hard to follow at times

that definitely needs to be changed!! Drives me NUTS. In the meantime I don't do pages so I can do the name lookup to find their posts I was replying to, but it's annoying!!

Or read to the end before replying. Problem solved!

No, it's not 'solved' unless you only ever want to reply to one post in a thread.

You can do what I just did.

Or quote the person you're replying to.

SlipSlidinAway · 10/03/2023 00:30

I wish people didn't feel the need to quote the whole of the opening post before replying. Makes threads unnecessarily long. And also looks ridiculous when a really long op is quoted with a one sentence response underneath.

The thread has moved on when there are 5 further pages of posts. Either your comment will have been made multiple times or it’s highly likely to be irrelevant by the time you post it.

Funniest time is when the first person to reply does it Grin

a 'like' option might reduce the amount of comments a bit and show those which are most popular.

Ah! a hierarchy of posts where only the Kings and Queens of the thread are more important and deserve to be heard. Others can hide in the corner somewhere with their tuppence worth of unpopular opinions. Perfect!

If a thread is too long for you to read, you're not that interested in it. You can read others.

RiverRock22 · 10/03/2023 00:36

@Giveaschitt

Yes I am aware. I mean in a voting capacity the only poll options are AIBU or not. So you have people trying to recreate a poll while adding meaning to AIBI or AINBU.

Bagsundermyeyestoday · 10/03/2023 00:37

Maternityleavelady · 09/03/2023 19:08

Absolutely time to bring in thumbs up and thumbs down to posts. And threads could go off on tangents - if you are interested in the side chat you can read that, if not you stick to the main original thread (sort of like replies to an Instagram post).

Or reddit. Sometimes I like the tangents, or want to start a tangent but I don't want to derail

MrsMikeDrop · 10/03/2023 00:38

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/03/2023 20:29

If you want Reddit or Facebook, go there.

Making every place the same because you like it that way means anyone who doesn't, has nowhere.

What's wrong with improving things??

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/03/2023 00:42

If it is an improvement. It's only an improvement if it makes things better. Making everything the same isn't an improvement.

Gymnopedie · 10/03/2023 00:42

I loathe the Reddit format.

Thassorl...

HyacinthineMacaw · 10/03/2023 00:45

Lordy no, please don’t make it look like Reddit - I can’t make my brain take in what I’m looking at there, and consequently I’ve only been on it a couple of times.

I like the way MN threads go, with conversation and discussion developing organically. It requires more thought and investment, and in theory, that should make for more considered responses (I did say in theory!). I have found some discussions here very enlightening and thought-provoking. A site with likes and threading and tangents would much diminish this place, I feel.

LittleBearPad · 10/03/2023 00:48

MrsMikeDrop · 10/03/2023 00:38

What's wrong with improving things??

They aren’t improvements.
