To wish Mumsnet would improve the way threads work

So often threads end up repeating themselves or others complain at posters who have not read page upon page of comments that they haven't done so.
It sometimes really stifles contributions and help for the OP.
I don't know what might make it better but a 'like' option might reduce the amount of comments a bit and show those which are most popular. What do people think ? What would you suggest could improve threads ?

I find this quite an odd forum in that the posts arent numbered

People can put @username for example and reply to something that person said, but how on earth do you know what they were replying to without trawling tens of pages backwards to work out what the answer refers to

I liked the nested responses as it was easy to follow

I dont like that if I reply to a post, it takes me to MY post that Ive just written rather than back to the post that I replied to so that I can continue reading the rest of the thread. I might be 5 pages behind but I dont know how far to go back as I wont have known what page I was on when I wrote my reply

I find this website really hard to follow at times

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/03/2023 20:29

If you want Reddit or Facebook, go there.

Making every place the same because you like it that way means anyone who doesn't, has nowhere.

BertieBotts · 09/03/2023 20:36

Well you're supposed to read the whole thread and then reply, you're not supposed to read half of it, reply to that and then read the rest of the thread. But you could always bookmark the post you're replying to I suppose?

It's a good idea about different types of opening posts, though. I like the conversation element of MN and I like the fact every post stands on its own. I don't think it's a problem that you can't easily see who is talking to who. You often can now anyway with the quote function.

I did also wonder if the save button was going to morph into a like-by-stealth. I wouldn't mind being able to react to posts with emojis, that's a bit different to the idea of a like option but is a bit more varied. Might be a recipe for disaster with people doing passive aggressive reacts, but could be fun too.

If you had different types of thread, you could do more complicated polls, which would be useful, you could have "canvass opinion" type threads and responses could be clustered by whether they contain the same keywords maybe in interactive bubbles showing which keywords show up most often in responses.

I'm not fussed about nested threads, mostly they are annoying, sometimes useful, but in general I find them fiddly. I don't think MN has to be like every other site.

Interested in this thread?

Then you might like threads about this subject:

JaneJeffer · 09/03/2023 20:37

Just leave it as it is.

Would like PMs on the app though.

RiverRock22 · 09/03/2023 20:37

An option for the app to be in pages rather than one long thread would be good.

It might be good to have different types of opening post. Then someone could post a "question" type, looking for a specific answer. The best answers could get upvoted and then "float" to the top. This is how other Q&A sites work, they specifically try to avoid long discussions. It is quite a specific thing though, whereas the vast majority of MN posts are just people moaning!

Yes this would be good rather than just AIBU or AINBU

I have not the faintest iota what this even means.

napody · 09/03/2023 20:43

Noooooo this is the thing I love about mumsnet. A normal, chronological chat, not braching out like a bloody tree. And if you want to go off on a tangent, you start a new thread.
I could just about cope with likes (although I think we'd lose something with people chasing likes)... but no replying to replies bollocks.... please!

Barnstormaway787 · 09/03/2023 20:45

I don’t like the Reddit style at all. I find it confusing and distracting. I much prefer current Mumsnet style. I like being able to see each post clearly in order. I think a like button and a time limited edit button would be helpful though.

I’d also like to return to the “posted in last 15 and 30 mins” as I found that quite helpful.

Also, I don’t know quite why, as I am not at all tech savvy, but I find it much harder to find “which way is up” on a thread since the last major format changes.

No. An MN thread is not a popularity contest - it is a discussion.

(And perhaps you don’t realise this question is asked repeatedly - and always gets the same answer: No.)

Yeah actually I take it back about the likes being maybe ok-ish at a push. I hate the idea.

Why would you want to 'avoid long discussions'?? This is the only forum that I can get absorbed in a really juicy, often well informed and well argued discussion.

category12 · 09/03/2023 20:49

I like the way MN works - I like that it goes off on tangents and I find threaded comments annoying.

Yeah - you’ve completely missed the point of this particular forum! As I said above, it’s a discussion - it evolves. The post you want to respond to may have been rendered completely irrelevant by the end point at the time you reach it. Please just do other posters the courtesy of following the conversation to the (currently) last post, before adding your nugget of wisdom.

Are you the police or something, you dont get to decide how or who people reply to and what they want to contribute.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 09/03/2023 21:04

I quite like the old school layout of MN threads. Just one big column of posts (I have mine set so that all posts appear on one page) that makes threads quite easy to scan. Not a fan of the nested style on Reddit. And changes to software aren't going to change posters habits of charging in 700 posts in to repeat something that 53 people have already said.

When MN did their update a few months ago the new feature of quoted posts within quoted posts within quoted posts was bloody awful But they fixed it.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/03/2023 21:06

If I feel lazy and can't be arsed to read, I pick threads with only a few answers to read. Some subjects I'm happy to read 300 replies, some I can't be bothered.

I'm going to sound a like of an idiot for a second so bear with me. I've been here a while and I post a fair amount and I don't name change much. If I do, I notice that people are in the main not as nice to me. They agree less. And when I'm MrsTP I see people agree with me when someone else has made the same point (often better). There is an element of 'liking' people on here. I am the fan girl of a couple of posters. But a Like button is often used as a popularity context. And we don't need more of that.

I'd rather read people's responses, Even if it can be a bit CANCEL THE CHEQUE at times.

If we had buttons they should be MN buttons:

WTAF
ODFOD
YABU
TSSDNCOP
FOTTFSOF
LTB

And so on.

One thing that is annoying and makes reading longer threads difficult since the site revamp is the fact they have constricted it all to a 600 pixel wide column on desktop and it won't expand to fit your screen Hmm

Exactly. It isn't Reddit.

... but honestly - MN has been here, quite successfully, for over 20 years now. If you don't like it, there are plenty of other places to go.

blueshoes · 09/03/2023 23:10

I am just happy there are no avatars. Dislike nested threads and likes. Just straight text on a scrolling page works for me. It is substance over (distracting) form.

curtaintwitcher23 · 09/03/2023 23:16

It would be a real shame to have a like or thumbs up option, it totally changes the dynamics , I read comments every week on Phillippa Gregory's and the other advice columns in The Guardian and there's one poster that appears on them all who has become so smug as if everyone is desperate to hear their take (I'm certain it's a man) and everyone kisses their arse saying 'oh you always say such wise words' , it creates hierarchy and feeds ego and people stop being honest and start responding in way they think will be popular or feel like dicks if ignored.

ThatsRoughBuddy · 09/03/2023 23:17

I'd love it if we could have tickers. They’re the best. So much fun.

Don’t beat me, I’m kidding!
