How cold is your house?

I've just come in no central heating on at the moment and looked at the thermostat and cannot believe it's only 10.7 degrees in my house it's bloody freezing. cannot afford to put the heating on during the day so I tend to wait until the evening when the dc are home to switch it on for a few hours so I'm sat here in my coat and hat! we've not even got the snow here where I am must be cold in the snowy areas. So just out of interest how cold is your house?

We're forecast -7° first thing on Saturday Shock

It's an old house, designed for roaring coal fires. Problem is mainly the draughts and high ceilings. And the wind is battering against the back door. The subfloor goes through to the neighbours - plenty of opportunity for more draughts via the airbricks. And I realised recently that the front stone wall and parts of the attic have no insulation.

It was listed years after we bought, and it was a shock to read all the limitations eg a storm door.

Every year I promise myself it'll all get ripped out and replaced, but each year something else unexpectedly turns up and more money gone.

Yeah mines a big draughty old house. High ceilings, tiled floors. Feeling it today

We are at 24C. We are extremely lucky in that we have an industrial sized external boiler which burns straw etc and generates insane amounts of heat - indeed I've got windows open - but its pretty old so it only has 2 settings off and extremely hot

TheNoodlesIncident · 09/03/2023 14:37

Ours is 21 degrees just now. It usually is around that during the day, DH has set that as the daytime temp (16 overnight) and Nest will turn the heating off and on to maintain it at the temperature set.

I guess it sounds high to a lot of people but I have lousy circulation and really feel the cold - at 20 for example it actually hurts. So at the moment I have a fuzzy zip hoodie on, fluffy slippers and a thick blanket. My hands are cold to the touch but not yet painful. DH is very kind as he doesn't really feel the cold and is currently going around in a t-shirt.

I live for going on holiday to hot countries where I can happily be toasty and comfortable.

Bemyclementine · 09/03/2023 14:54

12.5 when I got in half an hour ago. I've put the heating on.

slowquickstep · 09/03/2023 15:04

20.7 as the fire is blazing

Mistymoonsinastarrysky · 09/03/2023 15:47

I don’t know but I’m comfortable and I usually feel the cold. The dogs and DH are asleep, the wood burner is lit. I am lucky that within reason I can keep warm, I know for many that’s not an option ☹️

Mol1628 · 09/03/2023 15:53

18.5.

Cant let it get lower than this or we get damp on the external walls/corners.

I’ll probably turn it up to 19 later on.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 09/03/2023 15:56

Upstairs 18,downstairs I'd
Guess at around 23.

Middletoleft · 09/03/2023 16:01

WFH and hate being cold. I always get cold hands when sitting so it's a toasty 21C here (and supposed to be -1C outside).

Soozikinzii · 09/03/2023 16:03

12 ° in the day 18 in evening when heating is on . But I can recommend a heated throw in the day time really cosy and saves putting the heating on if there's only 1 person in . Only problem is you don't want to move once you've got it on !

GettingStuffed · 09/03/2023 16:06

Haven't a clue but I'm wearing a heavy long sleeved top and a sweater over the top. At home I was wearing this under a fleece blanket.

YorkieTheRabbit · 09/03/2023 16:10

Our bedroom is 14.9 at the moment, the windows were open until an hour ago, down stairs it’s 19, the heating has been on about half an hour.
It’s cold and been snowing all day.

beguilingeyes · 09/03/2023 16:13

17.3 st the moment. The thermostat is set to 18. My husband is wfh four days a week now. Gone are the balmy days when 21 was the absolute minimum. I feel the cold a lot more than him so it tends to be cooler when I'm no there.

fugly1 · 09/03/2023 16:19

It's not, got the log burner going. Well toasty!!

Ilikewinter · 09/03/2023 16:21

20.5. We have the thermostat set at 18 degrees normally from 5.30am - 7pm but yesterday it went up to 20, it will go back down at the weekend!

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 09/03/2023 16:23

18 degrees as the heating has just been on - it's snowing outside too. When I woke up this morning it was 13.2 and the heating had been off for 14 hours at that point.

We're very lucky that our bills have been reasonable though - we only paid £140 for both gas and electric combined last month.

jizzlord · 09/03/2023 16:23

18° no heating - we're very lucky that the houses either side seem to like living in a sauna and we benefit. It drops to 16.5/17° over night which is too warm for me so I tend to have a window open (middle aged with hot flushes) pre menopause I would have preferred it warmer though :)

Newestname002 · 09/03/2023 16:26

@TheNoodlesIncident

My hands are cold to the touch but not yet painful.

Have you tried wrist warmers or fingerless gloves (there's a hole for your thumb and the hand part covers the palm and back of the hand which I find gets really cold. I think some people use cashmere fingerless gloves (love cashmere as it's light but very warm), but I've got cheapo ones from Amazon which also work well. 🌹

glasshole · 09/03/2023 16:36

It's throwing snow down here and my thermostat says it's 19c. I'm wearing a extra king oodie and I'm mega toastie

LadyIckenham · 09/03/2023 17:14

Baltic but the heating has broken so it's distinctly nippy. It's actually comparatively mild outside (9 degrees after snow yesterday morning) but way colder inside. Confused

RoseMartha · 09/03/2023 17:15

About 15 with no heat on. I am cold however and wearing 4 layers. But because of the prices the heat will come on at 6.30 for one hour to take the edge off. Thermostat set at 18. In times gone by I would have set it to 20 and it would be on three hours.

purpleme12 · 09/03/2023 17:16

9 degrees when I'd come home from work. Heating hadn't been on while I'm out.
My child doesn't feel the cold half the time mind
